Could anybody tell me what time of the year the beer gardens open please ? Also if its raining (or the beer gardens are not open) which are the best beer halls to visit for a 30 strong group of 30 year old + lads ?

Thanks for your help
noddy
the biergartens are already open...

as for beer halls, to be honest i'd say the hofbrauhaus in the city centre would be best equiped to deal with your size of party... it is always fairly busy and probably the most touristy one, but i've seen them arrange multiple tables for large groups at fairly short notice...
Elfenstar
was gonna suggest that too noddy. they cater to large groups, just book well enough in advance. there's no guarantee with the weather though so if you book a table outside...

I would also suggest the Hofbräukeller, the Biergarten is great and there is a similar hall to the Hofbräuhaus (but not as raucous) if it rains. My other fave is the Park Cafe.

Höfbräukelleris a good choice, as you can either sit inside or outside, depending on weather.

Just down the road is the far lesser-known Unionsbräu where there's often live jazz, swing or dixie music. Also both in- and outside.

Löwenbräukeller is another one in the city that you can plan on for both indoor or outdoor drinking.

For biergartens themselves, I would go to the one in Englischer Garten called Chinesischer Turm. It's really big so you won't have trouble finding room for all of you, sunny or shady depending on where you sit, and you will see a broad cross-section of people there.

Actually you can't make reservations in the "Schwemme" the beer hall of Hofbräuhaus, but just go there early and you'll be fine.
The HardRockCafe Munich is just opposite to the Hofbräuhaus, if ur interested...
Then there is that Augustiner place in Bayerstrasse, right beside the brewery.. Don't know the details, maybe the other can help. My favarite beer in Munich is def the Augustiner.

Another beer hall the the Schwabinger Wirtshaus, very good located on Leopoldstrasse if the weather is not too good. Nice atmosphere, good food and reasonable prices.

The Augustiner beergarden in Arnulfstrasse is one of my favourites, the other one is definitely "Seehaus". Beautiful at the lake and it's good walk through the park. Some good looking chicks around there as well...
canuck
Biergardens you say...

Hmm... OK My Favourite large biergardens are (sorry in advance for the spelling):

1) Michaeligarden (near Michaelibad in Ostpark), nice lake setting. Like Seehaus only with less tourists and cheaper prices.
2) Menterschwaige (between Harlaching and Grunwald) high above Isar banks. Nice atmosphere. I stop here all the time when biking or running. Good food.
3) Alter Wirt (Ramersdorf, near the Chruch). More like a restaurant with a very large outside area(i.e. Beergarden). Very old establishment, and very good duck. The best weisswurst in Munich, but shitty Obadsa.
4) Aumeister...near Studentenstadt. Normal...
5) The Lowenbrau garden on Stiglmaierplatz is decent.
6) Max Emmauel beergarden near Universitat is not big, but it's a nice place none the less.
7) Kugler Alm in Grunwald forest near Deisenhofen/Oberhaching is really good too. And no tourists, but however VERY busy on a nice sunny weekend. Direct on a bike path.

Looks like its going to be raining at the weekend - Can anyone reccomend a beer hall preferably near the Englicher Garten or in the City Centre - there are a group of 30 of us so we'd prefer not to have to book.

Thanks

Augustinerkeller. Not in direct vicinity of the English Garden, but central and a great beer hall.

The hofbrau place on leopold strasse (next to roxy, gieselastrasse u.bahn) is a nice place with good service. We have been there twice in the past 3 weeks as a group of 12 or so brits and aussies having a real big session (400+euro bills and were only on helles!) and they were very welcoming despite not being the sort of place expat groups tend to go to. The food is also really good but is, of course, predominatly bayerisch.
we just took over an area of the bar but they will give you a proper big sit down table if you want it.

Bex, is the place you mean Wirtshaus zur Brezn? I definitely can recommend it. It is close to U-Bahn stop Münchner Freiheit.
Real bavarian but still somehow classy biggrin.gif Hmmm, I love the duck and dumplings they serve there.
randy
Strange, BL - cause that place always seems so deserted everytime I've passed by there; even in the summer, when all the other cafes are full - that one has 3/4 of the tables outside free. Always thought the food must be dangerous ohmy.gif
pootle
Food is excellent - but not cheap. Guess they are not a coffee shop like most of leopold str and are trying to attract a better bavarian customer. Was in there last sunday, and it was pretty full...

Great food, and a nice atmosphere. the same poeple own the wirst haus in der au...

No not Brez'n, this place is right next door to roxy which is right next to gieselastrasse ubahn station.
Although I do recommend Brez'n too, great ribs!

New plan - we're going to get off at the Central station and walk / tram to the Augustiner Keller - will they be able to accomadate 30 brit lads indoors on a Saturday afternoon if its raining ?
stuart
Or is Lowenbraukeller better ?
bubblylady
if you walk from the central station I would still recommend the Hofbräuhaus.
15 mins walk upmost. Just go straight from Central Sation (Bayerstrasse, Neuhauserstrasse, Kaufingerstrasse, Marienplatz is all one street more ore less). If that is too much walking you can have a break in the "Augustiner Bierhalle" in Neuhauserstrasse. They will be able to cope with 30 lads. The food there is nice too and u are right in the city centre. From there you can go wherever you wanna go. Have FUN!

out of courtesy for the service staff, and believe me they will be happy, if you know you're coming, call ahead. these big beer hall places can deal with such large groups, but you're doing yourself and your buddies a big favor.

ALSO... there is a BIG soccer match on Saturday. Bayern München against Werder Bremen and as you know this is THE match of the season. in any weather, the beer halls will be full. i know i am meeting a group at the Hofbrauhaus who are coming in just for the match.
stuart
Thanks - I have just taken your advice but not sure if the lady on the other end of understood what i meant.
Elfenstar
but did YOU understand her! biggrin.gif have fun on saturday.

rolleyes.gif Ooh I do hope so - If not we'll be down the Hofbrauhaus with you

I've got some relatives coming to stay on the weekend, and I would like to take them to a Beer Hall. Previously we have always taken guests to the Hofbräuhaus, but I'm getting a bit sick of it, even though its pretty good there.

Does anyone know if the Löwenbräukeller has a band playing like they do at the HBH? Or does anyone have another suggestion for a good traditional like beer hall in town?
bern
They do doing the Starkbierfest. Can't speak to other times, though.
