I would like to point out that Belgium is not the capital of the beer world; the Czechs are by consumption per capita and the Chinese overall..

As far as i am aware Belgium has the most type of beer in the world. I think there are over 400 types of
beer in Belgium. I don´t think China or the Czech republic has more variety than Belgium, hence in my opinion making Belgium the beer capital of the world.

Well it looks as if the meeting at the Semper Oper is off now. However, Wednesday is the last night of the Medieval Market in the Stalhof. I think Friday night is the last night of the Striezel Markt as well.
Chicagogo & I will probably be meeting there if you guys would like to meet up with us.
Let us know.

Okay, looks like things have died down here! So maybe we can do something about that. Hi I'm Jim, I'm from Portland, Oregon. Currently in Dresden till the 29th, then home, then back for at least a year on or around the 18th of Feburary. I've found somethings to do here in Dresden, some fun, some just to pass the time. I do however know that I don't intend to live my life sitting infront of my computer, even though I love it.
There's too much to be done in Europe, and I intend to do it. So start small, of course. Some of my co-workers, mostly americans, go bowling out at Elbe Park often. If you want to get out and have fun with us, you're welcome to do so. Talk to me. Other things to do, if you like to dance, I have been known to go to Arteum, fun club, if that's your thing. I happen to like the music and they have good drinks, seems people are a little more well behaved here than they are back home as well.
So lastly, I noticed a few posts here that hinted at people trying to make romantic connections. I'm just looking to meet new people, so if you have a boyfriend, bring him along, I hope you'll all come! I need some friends in my new town, and I'll just take it one thing at a time! Hanging out with the co-workers is fun, but we all just end up talking about work and I can't do that all the time.
Lets get out there people!
Hope you'll say hi!

I think going out on Sunday is against the law here! I went out looking for something to do last sunday, durring the day and it was a ghost town!
I'm not good at dancing, but if I get a few drinks in me I stop caring, and it's better than sitting in my hotel at night.

Hi All,
I can´t post that often as the company have blocked this website. smarter78 can also make it that makes 4. I am still waiting for some more people
to respond. So if anyone else that would be great.
Look forward till Sunday.

Alright, even if I'm the only one posting, this thread is going to have to pick up a little. I don't have much new to say, except that I had a blast on Sunday: makes me wonder why it took so long to get organized. (And, though I'm not married yet, I think that coming home tipsy and expecting dinner on the table was a good preparation for married life.)
Something else I think we could do here (and I'm saying on the website, not necessarily this thread) is to keep track of things available to do in the city. I know a bunch of us now have the Jahreskarten to the museums, and I'll watch for anything special there, as well as free events. For example, there is "Chambermusic" for free in a church out my way on Sunday. . . and there are concerts in that big hall-o-tapestries in the Zwinger Art Museum from time to time.
I'm thinking about starting a new thread and posting to it when events come up, not necessarily so that we constantly meet, but so that people (like me) who like the idea of getting out on the cheap have a running idea of what's available. Or is there some kind of callendar function on the website that would be better suited to that?
Alrighty, that's about all I have to say, now.

Ok,
I will post but i can´t post that often as the company has banned this website. This could be for 2 reasons, 1) someone is posting porn on this website or
2) there was too much anti american feeling which made the company feel a bit uneasy.
A few weeks ago i was accused by a few members on this website of being anti american (including Editor Bob). After spending Sunday with a bunch of Americans
i would like to take my anti american comments back. They are actually not all that bad.
Since i am in the confession mood, why stop there, a few months ago i tried to use this site as a dating agency and tried to hit on smarter78. That was also not the greatest
idea in the world. After meeting her i realise what a mistake this had been. She is actually a really nice person and as a result i have blown my chances of getting help
with my German homework which is actually too difficult. Engineering is easy but learning German, now that is a different challenge.
Now to all britboard members can we please cut down on the anti american feeling especially you lot from Berlin.
Editor Bob please, please don´t edit this thread.
Okay ST, this thread is back up and running.

Malikos!
I'm thrilled to find out I'm "not all that bad!!" I must say that my own stereotypes of Pakistani's with Scottish accents were clearly refuted on Saturday and I had fun . . . I'm glad the forum is functioning a little, because, you know, I'm pathetically attached to my computer like that. So, here's the question of the day for those of you versed in the ways of Dresden:
My parents do NOT drink alcohol, but are arriving tomorrow to see Dresden. We can discuss later the sanity of their decision to avoid alcohol, but that means that, in showing them the town in their jet-lagged state, I won't have the old "get 'em sloshed and they'll have a blast" fallback and so I'm posing to you this question: What are the must-see sights in Dresden? I'm thinking Frauenkirche, Zwinger, Semperoper, Altstadt in general. . . but are there little gems that you're fond of and would show visiting company? We'll be running around for two days, not including the actual wedding (I was tempted to invite someone to show up during the outdoor part of the reception and cause a scene, which I thought would be funny, but on second thought, I think some of you would actually do it) and so I don't need a lot, but want them to go home wanting to come back. (Because, you know, they're my parents and will take me out to eat when they visit.)
I end now with much thanks and greetings and all those things with which one is supposed to end a forum post

Maybe a dinner and drinks night like the curry night i saw talked about before. Or a bowling night or darts night. Or has anyone had the "brunch" it is really more like lunch at espitas. It is pretty good and happens once a month i think.

Kind of off topic I know, but have any of you brought a dog with you to Germany. I'm in US right now, getting ready to come back to Dresden, but this time for good. So if you have any experience with this, please write me. jimbot3k@mac.com

My advice on bringing a dog in the country would be to call the counselate while you're still in the U.S. It'll most likely to get the stuff you want done taken care off there. And they're Germans, so they will have bizarre requirements. Or, would your employer know what you have to do?
Either way, my experience with the German bureaucracy (I can never spell that word) is that you can never be too prepared and you'd better be prepared to spend some money.

Welcome back ST, how was the wedding. However, it has come to my attention that since we all met, everyone seems to have gone hiding on this forum.
Editor Bob, can you send out a search party to find the whereabouts, of Bonocom, Chicagoo and Smarter78
I don´t think we should meet as we obviously made such a great impression on each other.
I am sorry i couldn´t come to the superbowl as i was in Prague at the weekend and was really tired.
On a separate note, do the English have to come to every country and think that they own it. Prague is such a beautiful city,
spoilt by drunken English trying to make themselves the centre of attention. There were Italians and Spanish also there but why do the English have to stick out with their drunken behaviour. I am sort of glad i am in Dresden where i meet few English people. You could see the relief on everyones faces when the
English left the club. Had a debate with German people at work who said i hope the English don´t come here as they will inflate prices. The Czechs can´t even live there because the English has inflated the entire city.
Sorry for this rant, does anyone know if there are any cities in Germany where the English behave like that.
Editor Bob, please don´t edit the post as this post is too stimulate debate and not meant as confrontation.

Feb 7 2007, 2:51 pm
The wedding was amazing. . . very German and I was very often surprised (I thought I'd managed to keep involved in the planning, but obviously hadn't) and very pleasant. My parents' first impression of Dresden was great, too, which is important because whenever they come visit me I get all my meals in restaurants. :-)
More wedding details can be found at
www.stcrowley.comI really don't know anything about the English inflating prices, as I haven't been around them much. I've never minded drunken English behavior, I'm just relieved when the annoying people aren't Americans (spend time around an American military base in Germany. . . could wither even my patriotism) and that they can understand me.
I have heard that Prag is too pricey for Czechs, but there are supposed to be many other, equally nice cities in the CR. I hope one day, for example, to visit Pilzen (home of the beer). . . But I'm still working on my Germany-tourism first.

If you want to see bad, drunken behavior visit any American college campus. Super bowl weekend was insane, I haven't seen so many girls flashing people since Halloween in Madison.

If not meeting up for a drink would also be a nice break and give me a reason to at last stop off in Dresden.

I'm in Boston- moving to Dresden mid July. I'll be living in Striesen. I was told it's a nice neighborhood- safe and quiet. (But, I was also told that Neustaude is where all the fun is.) Google Earth shows Dresden as a beautiful place to live. It looks like there are a lot of parks and tree lined streets there. My question is this: Where do people swim in Dresden? Is the Elbe a river you can swim in?? If it's anything like the Charles in Boston I wouldn't go near it. I am use to going to the beach all summer long. Google Earth doesn't show any swimming pools or ponds anywhere around the city. Are they indoors? or do people in Dresden just not swim in the summer?? Is it hot and humid? It has been unbearable hot here in recent summers. Thanks~

Hey, just joined this forum. I got into Dresden about a month ago for work, and I'm here until the end of September. I'm from Canada, near Toronto. Are there any good places to meet people here (in Dresden)? I read that Jim Beans bar is frequented by an English speaking crowd. I might just drop by there tonight, see what's going on.
Looking through the posts, it seems that this forum is pretty dead compared to other forums... I'm hoping this forum will liven up.
Also, anyone know any good ways to learn German? Any books or CDs that I can get? I really don't want to commit 3-4 nights a week on a German course. I've been reading this text book I borrowed from a coworker and I'm learning a little, but I'd like to do better.

I'm in Boston- heading over to Dresden in July. I'm using a Pimsler CD. It's pretty good. There's no text- It's an all audio program, but I like it. I downloaded the CDs onto my Ipod so I can listen when I'm cleaning the house. You can find it online here- or try EBay or Craig's List .

Hello RDW... let me try to give you answers to your questions... Striesen is a very nice area to live in - true

But it is about a 15 min tram ride (depends on where in Striesen you will be living) to Neustadt or the the city center. You don't really find lakes in Dresden. There is a lake in Cossebaude but I don't really think it is that good anymore. If you have a car it makes things easier. If you don't... oh well... But we do have pools - indoor&outdoor. So people do swim in Dresden

I wouldn't try the Elbe but I think twice a year they do their traditional swimming in there. If you want to try... Dresden can get pretty hot in the summer and it will be hard for you because we don't have too many AC. Most of the time it is not humid so it is not THAT bad. I hope I could help you a little. If you have any spare room in your suitcase please bring swiss miss

Thanks for your help. It turns out that my apartment is in Blazewitz- NOT Streisen. It's on Wittenberger Strasse. I know it's quite far from Neustade. But I will be there for 3 years, so maybe I can move when I know the city better. I will miss the ocean, and plan to bring all my seashells and beach pictures with me..But maybe I can fit some packages of Swiss Miss in my suitcases, too!

I certainly WON'T miss the humidity. Boston has been brutal over the last few summers. I heard that there is no AC- but they DO sell fans, don't they???
