Musical: West Side Story comes to Munich

Which Night?

3 Lions
The West Side Story musical is coming to Munich in May 2004. Which of the above nights does anyone want to go?

In case a few are wondering where the rest of the days are then this is why -

Mon & Wed - I am at German classes.
Sat & Sun - A few people had expressed an interest in going midweek

There are also some dates missing as I am in the UK for a week.

So all that needs to be decided is which night suits us best, Amimeli is looking in to group discounts for us.

Um, Ken darling. I'll be gone in East Germany visiting farms with my students from June 1-5. Can't do those dates. Sorry I didn't tell you that before you posted this.

group tixs only available after 20 persons are registered. i always do a sat. or sun. matinee so might just be going on me own.

June 4th or 5th - LADS NIGHT OUT, LADS NIGHT OUT, LADS NIGHT OUT

When someone says Lads Night Out, the first thing that pops into my head sure isn't "lets go see the West Side Story musical"

Nothing against West Side Story at all, just the combination of the two.

I'm quite certain that Ken was not referring to going to West Side Story for Lads Night Out. He was just simply excited about me being gone and being free to hang out with the guys.

I'll be back by Saturday night, just so you know...better to plan all the guys to go out on Friday. Or during the week for that matter, but that would mean involving less alcohol...

I just voted for Friday 14th May.
JoolyBooly
have you guys got 20 tickets planned, then? We were going to get "lange Nacht der Musik" tickets and try to get in for free this Saturday, but the chances are minimal.
If not we were planning Tues 18th but are flexible if you're getting cheaper tickets or going in a group ;o)

The date for seeing West Side Story as a group will be Friday, May 28th at 8pm, since Friday got the most votes and we have been too slow in planning anything before then.

We can only get group tickets if we have a group of more than 20 people. Which it looks like we won't have.

3 Lions and I have been to the Deutsches Theater before for a show and it is a rather small theater and there doesn't seem to really be any horrible seats.

But in order to get a group of seats together we can't get the absolute cheapest seats because those are just the seats on the ends of certain rows. See the seating chart at this website if you are interested in looking. For the seating chart click on "Saalplan.": http://www.deutsches-theater.de/dt/deutsch...ine_bestellung/

So the tickets will cost 31 € each. (30€ + 1€ service fee).

Of course, if you want even better tickets, you can just book them yourselves for the day that we go and sit up closer (but not with us.) (For those of you who are loaded! )

I was trying to think of the best method for organizing the buying of the tickest. I don't really want to (and my bank account says I can't) fork out the money to buy everyone's tickets and wait until later for them to pay me back because I'm also afraid that some people will say they want to come but then back out before paying and that will leave me with extra tickets. So I thought the best way to do this was for those who want to go to first post in this thread that they want to come. Then I'll send you a PM with my bank account info and you can transfer me the 31€.

Don't worry, I won't run off with your money. If I did, then I'd never be able to show my face at a Toytown event again.
For those of you who don't know me, just ask around to verify my credibility.

Okay, if I have forgotten anything or if you have any comments or any better ideas, then let me know.

That deal for the free tickets for the West Side Story on the Lange Nacht der Musik sounds great, but I'm afraid that people will start lining up outside the box office way before 7pm when it opens and the 100 free tickets will be gone quickly. But if you want to try, go ahead! I'm curious to see if you get the free tickets! Maybe next year I'll try for a show if you are successful!

I guess I should set a deadline also for everyone else to decide and transfer me the money. I'll give everyone a week from today to do this. It is also after the Lange Nacht der Musik, so you will know by then if you were able to go see it for free or not.

So the date will be: Tuesday, May 18th.
If you haven't given/transfered me the money by then, then I won't get you a ticket!!

Maybe I shouldn't fair warn this - but I've not heard too good of reviews of that musical on that stage. Too small, and the guest actors were... well...

I only mention it since you're talking about shelling out 30 Euro for the event...

@randy
Where did you read these bad reviews?
I was curious, so I tried searching for reviews and I only came up with those that were listed on the Deutsches Theater website. But, of course, all of those were good. (They would probably not put bad reviews on their website). All of these are in German, but if anyone is interested in reading them, go to this website:
http://www.deutsches-theater.de/dt/deutsch...resse_berichte/

I tried searching for more reviews not on their website, but I wasn't able to find any new review by the Süddeutsche Zeitung. But I did find an interesting article in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung (in German) about when Leonard Bernstein used to stay at the Vierjahreszeiten in Munich and about the reaction of the Germans when West Side Story was first performed in Munich more than 40 years ago.
http://www.sueddeutsche.de/muenchen/artikel/177/31146/

I also read the Sueddeutsche Zeitung review that was done about West Side Story when it was in Frankfurt. And that review was good.

The Münchner Merkur called the Munich West Side Story: "timelessly beautiful" (zeitlos schön) and the main actors for Maria (Carolann Sanita) und Tony (Sean Attebury) sang "dreamily beautiful" (traumschön).

Hi Animeli,

Actually I didn't read them, but asked some friends about going, and heard their review. Caveat though - I just learned they saw the show *two years* ago; so the point about the actors is probably not valid; but the stage they said was just too small for West Side Story. But maybe they're just complaining excessively, they are German after all
amimeli
Well, no has responded. Don't know if it's because no one saw this post, no one is interested anymore because it is too expensive or some other reason.
But Ken (3 Lions) and I won't be going on Friday, May 28th.
We may try going on June 11th. A couple friends expressed interest in going then instead. Will let you know more later about that.
