Teaching English at School

OK, I'm sure someone here knows about this topic. biggrin.gif

Assuming that you get a TEFL certificate:

1. How easy is it to get a teaching job in a school (i.e. Grundschule)?
2. Is it necessary to get any German qualification to teach English in
a German school (as opposed to teaching adults in a VHS or freelance)?
3. What salary could you expect as an English teacher in a Grundschule?

Thanks.

I had a friend who was a qualified primary school teacher in Canada and she couldn't teach in schools here so she worked in a language school teaching TEFL.

I wouldn'T swear to it but I don't think a TEFL is enough to teach English in Grundschule I think you need to have completed the German programme and have German qualifications.

I did TEFL at Inlingua in Koblenz for 2 years from 1992-1994 and when I'd had enough there, I considered teaching English in a state school but soon realised that my Prep. Cert. TEFL wasn't enough to get me that kind of job and I'd have had to do some kind of conversion training course. It may well be different now though... huh.gif

I think it used to be that you had to have all the relevant teaching qualifications, but at the moment some areas are so desperate for teachers that they are actually using people with no qualifications.

I was asked by my sons school (comprehensive) to teach English there. I do have my CELTA but I don't think that was relevant, it appears that it was enough that I speak English. I was quite shocked to find out that one of there English teachers is Kenyan and I had a conversation with her and couldn't actually understand a word she was saying, her english is absolutely diabolical.

When I took my other son to register at the Grundschule they too offered me a job teaching.

So it is possible in some areas to teach english. I would suggest approaching the schools directly. You are then paid directly by thae Stadt and the pay here is 16.50 euros per 45 mins.

Thanks for the replies. It's hardly worth teaching in schools I think... more money going private. happy.gif

So Andrea I am interested to know if you took either of them up on their offers to teach English.

I am also looking for a position teaching English. Am an Australian Primary School teacher and was told that approaching the schools directly won't get me very far - only perhaps for an emergency position, maybe. I was invited to send my CV to the school I rang but then they would expect me to also teach other subjects - and unfortunately my German isn't good enough to teach other subjects in German.

They passed me on to the Bezirksregerung - where somebody pointed me in the direction of a PDF Bewerbungsboden for Quereinsteiger - those that don't have Lehramt qualifications but might have other qualifications that would make them good candidates for teaching. In this case I am looking only for a specialist English teacher position.l

It doesn't seem so easy to get through the mire. I had to do something similar when we lived in England but did get my qualifications accepted. The difficult part was being unable to find a teaching position.
