After reading Sandra's earlier post, I was just wondering how long you all have been here in Germany. I get the impression some of the blokes have been here a while. I have been here for 8 years. My Husband is American, we came over from RAF Uxbridge and have been here in "little America" ever since. He finally retired and now has a civilian job working for the US Govt in Stuttgart . Will we ever go back and live in the UK? not the way the country is being run right now. I feel very alien whenever I go back, I have lost the "Street Smarts" I had when I lived in London. I just read in my local paper that gangs of teenage girls are roaming the streets robbing people of their mobile phones.I don't want my kids to be like that. Will we go and live in the US?...Never!!

Hi Nicole,

i came across in 1975 as a 16 year old, my mother being german met my father in the 1950's when he was a soldier. they lived over 20 years in england before coming over here. they moved back 4 years ago but not to london (where i was born) or to canvey but to cornwall.

i wont give up my english roots, want to go back sometime in the future, my german misses wants to go. i have a brother who lives in las vegas the last 2 years, he moved from blackfen. i would not live in america either, worked for the american army for over 10 years and that was enough for me. i will just say they are different wink.gif

Met a german girl in Uni in England but she was only 8 months there and had to go back to Germany. So I decided to follow suit after I finished my course.
Been here 3 and a half years now and am planning on staying permanent.

We arrived in Germany in 1985 - 2 kids later we are still here. Doubt we will ever go back home to live.

Definately rookie in Germany judging by the posts so far. Will have been here exactly one year on Friday. Here on a 3 year foreign service contract with my Company. Not in any rush to get back to blighty - we'll have to see how things stand in a couple of years time...

I've been here since April '95. Originally we only planned to stay for 3 years but we like it so we have stayed longer. Going back to England has no appeal at the moment. Our last 'holiday' in England was interesting for the kids and a bit weird for me as it really felt like a different place to the one I left 9 years ago. Perhaps that's because I don't go there often enough.
Part of me would love to move to another European country but then I think of starting to learn another language from scratch and I'm not so sure about it.

I have been here since 2001. I am now married and have a son (4 months old). I am having real problems with the language though. My girlfriend speaks fluent English and we both work for the same English speaking company in HH. Worst of all I watch Sky TV at home :$ I love it here, but i would prefer to live in the south, even if the people in the north are more friendly smile.gif

I was here for about 18months back in 1994 after I left university. Now been here since September 2000. No intention to go back anytime soon ... would only consider if someone offered me so much money that I couldn't refuse. But even then I'd have serious doubts about letting my kid(s) grow up in UK.
Plus I'd miss the bread...

Left England for Germany NWR 3 years ago to live with the German boyfriend. Was there 6 months before he got posted to France. We moved from the German boarder, 5 mins from the Holland to the France boarder, 5 minutes from the Germany. We will be here for 4 years (20 months to go) and then its either back to Germany (Sankt Augustin) OR possibly Tanzania Africa for 5 years.

Really want to go back to Germany. The husband said OK BUT ONLY if I can find a job (would get paid loads more if we go to Africa) so if you know anyone who wants a young..ish lady who speaks crappy German but is willing to do anything then let me know and save me from those wild animals

Rebecca
Corrine, if you are interested in TEFL work the Bonn area does have a number of language schools. I used to work for some of them but gave up when my daughter was born. I'm planning to take it up again when my son goes to Kindergarten later this year so I can let you know in a few months how much demand there is for teachers.
Slackmack
I got posted to BAOR in '84, been here ever since
