Would a US driving licence be legal to use here?

You'll be able to use it for a while (I think 6 months is the limit) and then you'll have to get a German one. You might have to take a driving test, depending on which US state your license was issued in.

As far as I know, it depends on which state you got your driving license from. Germany will let you do a swap (get a replacement German license) without problems for some US states, but for others, you need to take the German driving test. The problem stems from the fact that the driving test requirements are not consistent across the US.

but so far as i know not a military license, the germans dont accept these any more.
