Paying For Water In The Gym?

I've just joined a new Gym, part of the Injoy chain. I discovered today, on my second visit, that I am not allowed to bring my own water to drink whilst I'm working out (it is in a plastic bottle so quite safe etc). Apparently I have to buy water, 2€ for a half litre. This is just ordinary water, out of a tap, not even Evian. I can drink my own water but I am only allowed to do that in the changing rooms.

What I would like to know from all you gym bunnies out there is, is this normal? At my old gym I could bring my own water no problem. I've been going to gyms for years and this is the first time I have encountered this.

I'm no expert on German law but I would say that this is probably illegal.

When you are exercising in a gym you are dehydrating yourself - If you don't replace your fluids as you lose them you could end up passing out and potentially causing yourself a lot of damage - If you refuse to buy their water but they won't let you drink your own then I would love to see them in court trying to prove they are not liable for any potential injuries you might have suffered.

In the UK various less scrupulous night clubs and pubs charging a fortune for bottled and tap water tried to stop people bringing their own bottled water and would also stop the running water in the toilets hand basins. This resulted in a change in the law that now dictates all pubs and clubs have to provide free tap water.

Your gym wouldn't get away with this if it were in the UK - People would be phoning the newspapers and Watchdog by the dozen!

Something doesn't smell right here - Are you sure the staff member who told you this is talking out of the correct orifice?

I have to say I though it was mad. I'm okay now, but in the summer I'll probably pass out. But there is no way I'm paying for water. It is in their contract (which of course I didn't read properly, tsk, tsk).

I also note that I have to change my shoes before using the gym (for hygeine reasons appar). But I could running through all sort of unsavory stuff in my trainers when I'm not at the gym and still change into them at the gym, so don't really get the point of that either.

It’s a cheap con; I don’t blame you for being niffed.

Disneyland Paris also do not allow you to take food or drinks into the park, they even have guys checking bags on the way in, just to get you to eat and drink at their expanding profit margin. dry.gif

We thought sod'em and took ready made rolls and drink in... which we "acquired" rolleyes.gif from their hotels breakfast buffet.

...It doesn't matter what is in a contract - If the law of the land dictates otherwise (and I suspect for health and safety reasons it probably does) then the contract doesn't mean a thing.

I'd vote with your feet if you can't get satisfaction to be honest.
