Just arrived into Mch.
Great to be here.
Looking for any good food supermarkets in south Mch.
We are based in the Planegg area.
Any help much appreciated.

imo, the grocery stores here suck!
there you go! smile.gif

okay so really... i guess there are a few decent ones, but in Grunwald the 3 in the city are horrible!

Try V-Markt (pronounced "fow-markt"), North of Rosenheimerplatz on Balanstrasse. (also has cheaper petrol)
Good for sundries, but veggies are a bit off sometimes. - lots of frozen etc. - everything for the house too.

Also, there's 2 Wal-Mart's that may satify N.Americans ...see Wal-Mart - There are 2 Walmart stores in Munich

V-Markt is a heck of a way to go from Planegg. Near Pasing there is a big supermarket called HIT, if they haven't changed the name again.

Yes they do, and the reason is that most Germans prefer to buy their food in smaller, specialist shops and at markets - something no longer possible for most Americans or Brits. Personally, I can live with small supermarkets if it means I can buy good quality, fresh produce from a family-run store.

From Planegg you can shop at a nice Aldi in Neuried for staples and produce, and at AEZ in Martinsried for namebrand and more upmarket items. There is a Walmart in Obersendling where you can get everything you need, but take an aspirin beforehand if you go on a weekend. Parking is a nightmare. Good luck!

i'm fine w/ going store to store for good products or going to a small grocery store for quality. but when it lacks both quality AND selection then it starts to become irkesome considering if they aren't going to offer quality at least give some selection!

Oh my god! Not this discussion again and again- open your eyes and stop moaning. There are several good stores to shop at (except WALMART)

I just wrote a few reports about this topic and added pictures:

New supermarket openings

Check out
- minimal stores across the city
-Edeka Simmel in Unterhaching
-basic-(bio) city centre
-Hit - several locations

Picture of Edeka in Unterhachung (just self checkouts)

What's the location of Edeka Simmel in Unterhaching? Street name, I mean.
abog
Its on Grünwalder Straße- open from 7.00-20.00
S-Bahn Taufkirchen station is better than Unterhaching I think... went there by car...

Edeka is in Taufkirchen (just beside Unterhaching, unless we are talking about different Edeka), think it's between Grunwalder Weg and Waldstrasse from looking at the map.

By public transport take the S5 to Taufkirchen. You could walk to Edeka or the bus that goes regularly from the s-bahn station to IKEA passes by Edeka. Obi and some other big stores are just beside it.

It's close to the E54, exit Taufkirchen but I've only gone there with public transport.
abog
you are right- its called Grünwalder Weg not Gründwalder Straße. Its the same store we're talking about. biggrin.gif

What do you think to this store??
abog
Well there are some more Edeka Centers (big Edekas) :

one on Guardinistraße
one on Hanauerstraße
one in Riemarkaden
one on Theresienhöhe

Hauauerstr. and Guardinistraße:

Hi Gordon,

Welcome to the neighborhood. In our area the pickings seem to be pretty slim with respect to "good" grocery stores. You have probably already discovered the Tengelmann on Banhofstrasse and the Edeka Aktiv in the center of Planegg. I am in Krailling and go on occasion to the AEZ in Martinsreid. There is also a Tengelmann in Krailling that is not quite as cramped as the one in Planegg... Just remember, by living out here in Wurmtal what you sacrifice in quality super markets you will make up for in quality Biergartens.
Nicky
Thanks everyone, especially abog. I'm going to try it out, Edeka Simmel I mean, tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

if anyone in the south of Munich (Gruenwald area) needs some late night grocery shopping then for the duration of the World Cup you're in luck!

I just discovered that the Minimal is now open until 2200!!! wahoo!!
It's only 2 hours later and i doubt i'll be going, but still... makes me smile. Slowly the life of German grocery stores is not QUITE as wretched (but still heaps of room for massive improvement).
