...so the wife just called and said she heard that during construction of the new apartments near Donnersbergerbrücke, they found an unexploded 5 ton bomb from World War II. Apparently they plan to detonate it around noon. Can anyone confirm this?

Interesting. If it's true then this is the second bomb in that area this year.
More info on previous WWII bomb disposal operations in Munich:
There's one guy in Munich who is the resident bomb disposal expert. He has a little dog that helps him sniff them out too. This is him - photo taken at the 6.Feb.2006 defusing:

FIVE TON!
jeez...monster...
do they even exist that big? must be as big as a car...

I can pretty safely confirm that they won't be detonating it - a 10,000lb bomb would blow a whole street down. I'm also pretty sceptical that nobody found a 10,000lb'er after the war - that's a big fucking bomb (bigger than a car)...

anyone got a picture of a 10000lbs bomb?

...hmmm, right. Maybe "disarming" it is what they'll be doing... or maybe they can stuff it under that big smokestack that's still standing and make use of it

(I think 5ton is 10,000lb - is that right? 2,000lbs to a ton? If so there's no such bomb as a 10,000lber - more likely a 12,000lber Tallboy)
EDIT: and here are the stats:
QUOTE
Name: Tallboy
Type: Deep Penetration Bomb
Length: 21 ft (6.4 m)
Diameter: 38 in (0.97 m)
Weight: 12,000 lb (5,443 kg)
Warhead: 5,200 lb (2,360 kg) Torpex explosive
Number Used: 854

apparently,
According to the extrapolations from data in Anon. 1956 (p. 14), presented here, it can be estimated that a 5000-kg bomb (containing 2500..3000 kg of high explosive) could...
break a 2.5-tile strong tile wall within ca. 28 metres;
crack a 2.5-tile strong tile wall within ca. 42 metres;
break heavy timber walls within ca. 42 metres;
break a plank wall within ca. 104 metres;
break window frames, doors and light partition walls within ca. 150 metres;
blow out window glass within ca. 450 metres;
and crack window glass within ca. 1700 metres from its explosion.
But that is of a prototype soviet weapon which could only delivered by one special plane...
not sure many that size could have been dropped on Munich during the war...
EDIT: second photo is more likely bomb according to earlier post...BEASTS!

... Just heard on Bayern3 that they will close Donnersbergerbrücke and Arnulfstrasse from 2:00 until 3:00 this afternoon in order to disarm a "fliegerbombe". This affects the area from D.Brücke to Hackerbrücke. No mention of the size of the bomb found...
EDIT: From B3 website:

Yep - Tallboy is the one stood on the left. The bloke is in front of a 4,000lb cookie, and to the right is a 22,000lb Grandslam, used to destroy Uboat bunkers and the like.

Also on B3, it says a "Fünf-Zentner-Bombe". A "Zentner" is 50kg, according to www.leo.org.
So I guess that's 250kg. The Kastanien at Augustiner are safe.

That's more like it - a 500lb general purpose bomb. Much, much, much more common.

You'll be alright UA. Just paint yerself white to deflect the blast and hide under the nearest table. It might just only blow yer knickers off instead.

500lb'er probably wouldn't even blow UA's knickers off. 12,000lb'er would probably blow mine off, and I'm 800 miles away.
