DDBug, that is illegal. A foreigner can do what they want on their own time and dime, but not within the party structure. Fox and Murdoch gets away with it, but I think that that should be made illegal too.
DDBug
I seriously doubt my step-father would ever do anything illegal, it is not illegal to pay for a dinner (at a fundraiser), make a tax deductable contribution, donate time helping organize things.
cinzia
And if it was illegal, you would think that the party might have mentioned that before accepting such financial and volunteer aid.
Bumpy
And the Democrats get away with it too!

... Clinton administration and the Lippo Group, the multibillion dollar Indonesian-based holding company headed by Mochtar Riady.

Members of the Riady clan and their associates contributed millions of dollars to Clinton and the Democrats. Millions more in questionable donations were brought in by John Huang, a former Lippo executive. Huang, who was first named to a senior post in the Clinton Commerce Department, joined the Democratic National Committee, where he became a vice chairman and top fund-raiser.
DDBug
Geez guys, My step-father was, as a foreign citizen resident in the US, very adament about not breaking any laws. However, since he did not have the right to vote, he was as active as legally possible in his choice of political party.
As my mother is now as a US citizen resident in Britain.

DA Launches VoteFromAbroad.org!
April 14, 2006 --

Be the first to use the Democratic Party's new overseas voter registration tool:

http://www.VoteFromAbroad.org

Democrats Abroad, the international arm of the Democratic Party, is pleased to bring to you this special pre-launch announcement. VoteFromAbroad.org is the only online voter registration tool that was built by Democrats; is owned by Democrats; and is designed to help tip Democrats to victory in the upcoming elections.

In the last election we were successful in helping over 230,000 US citizens register to vote, in-person and online (overseasvote.com, overseasvote2004.com and tellanamericantovote.com). VoteFromAbroad.org is even more robust and user-friendly than previous online voter registration tools and will ensure that your registration process is as accurate and comfortable as possible. Imagine the impact we'll have on the upcoming elections!

We urge you, as a Democrats Abroad member, to be the first to use this fantastic new tool.

Since this is a pre-launch, you may find a glitch or two as you move through the process. Please send any such hiccups to our development team at help@VotefromAbroad.org. (The official launch will come in May.)

We also urge you to contact your friends and relatives abroad to inform them of this Party-owned registration program. You might also reach out to your contacts in the States, asking them to inform their own overseas contacts about VoteFromAbroad.org. Once you have used the program, we are sure that you will want to help spread the word about this user-friendly on-line tool.

Our overseas voter registration goal for 2006 is to double our numbers from 2004. VoteFromAbroad.org and with your help we will make our goal! Together, we will help tip Democrats to victory this November.

May Meeting:
The next meeting will be May 10th at 7PM in the Foyer Room of the Eine Welt Haus – Schwanthalerstr 80 (U4/U5 to Theresienwiese stop – one stop from Hauptbahnhof).

Agenda
-Tax Information
-Voter Registration

Mark Summers, CPA, will be presenting information and answering questions about US taxes for Americans overseas. He is also hoping to have a German tax expert join him for the presentation (not yet confirmed). You can send me any questions you would like answered now so that they can be sure they can answer them during the meeting.

We will also be covering the results of our first voter registration event as well as plans for additional events.

Democratic Vision: 6 key points for Democrats in 2006:

1. Honest Leadership, Open Government
2. Real Security
3. Energy Independence
4. Economic Prosperity and Educational Excellence
5. A Health Care System That Works for Everyone
6. Retirement Security

Letter from the Chair:
The Italians learned last week that their overseas citizens can make a difference in an election. The same could be true in November for the US. With over 6 million Americans living overseas, and we assume that a majority are Democrats, overseas voters can play a key role in taking back Congress from the Republicans. The last 2 years of the Bush administration would be less damaging with Democrats controlling both the House and Senate. This is an achievable goal – but not a done deal. One way that Democrats Abroad is working to help is by helping register more overseas Americans with voter registration events and a newly announced voter registration website – www.VoteFromAbroad.org.

You can help by volunteering to assist in the voter registration events and/or promoting the on-line registration. See more details below.

We are in the process of auditing and cleaning up our membership database. If you are no longer in the Munich area, please let me know so I can remove your name or move it to another DA chapter. Also, if you know Americans in the Munich area that would be interested in receiving information, please have them join via www.democratsabroad.org or send their information to me: Shari Temple chair_democratsabroadmunich@yahoo.com

Voter Registration Events
Democrats Abroad around the world will be hosting voter registration events on the weekend of May 5-7. This will be celebrating the 30 year anniversary of Americans overseas having the right to vote. In addition, it will be the official launch of the new voter registration webside.

The DA Munich Chapter will be holding our voter registration event at the Munich Newcomers Festival – May 7 from 1PM-6PM at the Praterinsel - www.newcomers-festival.de/bavaria. Please come and look for the Democrats Abroad booth and register to vote. Also, please tell your friends.

We will be holding additional registration events over the next months. If you have suggestions on events or locations with Americans, please let me know. We registered over 1000 voters in 2004 and would like to exceed that number in 2006.

If you are interested in helping with any voter registration events, please let me know. We currently have 12 volunteers and would like to have at least 25 trained volunteers to handle the various events.

New American Consulate Hours
Notice from American Consulate

Please help us spread the word: our public hours for U.S. citizen services (passports, reports of birth abroad, notarial services) are changing! After many years of morning hours (8 a.m. to 11 a.m.) we are changing to afternoon hours starting in April. Starting in July (probably) we'll be doing visa interviews in the mornings.

There are a few other changes - reports of birth abroad by appointment only (these will continue to be done in the mornings) and a reduction in the hours we are available for notarial services (two afternoons per week).

Also, we continue to encourage people to check our website for the latest information and to contact us by e-mail rather than by phone.

2006 Meeting Dates
The DA Munich meetings will be the second Wednesday of each month at 7PM at the Eine Welt Haus. Please mark your calendars for: May 10 – Jun 14 – Sep 13 – Oct 11 – Nov 8 – Dec 13

We have a new voter registration site. Sounds great, but we need to get the word out to everybody and everybody is not online. So, do you have a few bucks to spare? How would you like to get this:

Contributors will be kept in the loop through e-mails, global conference calls, and an annual dinner in Washington, DC. They will be invited to small gatherings overseas, both to network among themselves and to meet prominent Democrats passing through.

They are welcome at stateside DNC events that meet their U.S. travel schedule (including the 2008 Convention), commensurate with their giving level, and are encouraged to affiliate with any stateside "councils" that may be of interest (the Democratic Business Council, Women's Leadership Forum, Gay & Lesbian Leadership Council, African-American Leadership Council, Asian Pacific Islander American Leadership Council, Indo American Leadership Council, South Asian American Leadership Council, Hispanic American Leadership Council).

The goal is to provide resources that will help Democrats win elections and get our country back on track, not least to regain its standing in the global community.

* Continent Trustees - $26,700
* Country Trustees - $10,000
* Chairman's Circle - $5,000
* Member - $2,500

For you that have the means, this is the time to do something more. It is time to put your money where your mouth is. Help us register overseas voters.

Its nice to see that you are optimistic about your country's future democratic chances, but to be honest I reckon your country is screwed. Its in the hand of the corporations now, and no matter who is in the white house, they are carrying out the wishes of these corporations.

WEST POINT GRADUATES AGAINST THE WAR "Duty, Honor, Country."

QUOTE
Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war,

That this foul deed shall smell above the earth

With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Julius Caesar

Why?

We members of West Point Graduates Against The War stand appalled at the deceitful behavior of the government of the United States and, in particular, its widely known malefactors. Their lying, cheating, stealing, and rendition of evasive statements not only has demeaned these deceivers and our country, but they have placed vast numbers of innocent people in deadly peril as a direct result of their deceptions. We will not serve these lies, that is, we will not work for, be a servant to, provide for, assist, or promote the interests of this dishonorable administration. By remaining silent we tacitly serve; we are no longer silent.

The illegal assault and occupation in Iraq has killed tens of thousands of innocents, both American, Iraqi, and others, causing incalculable damage to Iraq and the Iraqi people, as well as the reputation and honor of the United States of America.

The behavior of this administration is particularly odious since it makes mockery of the code of conduct instilled in us at West Point. "A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do." This has provided us with a lifelong respect for the truth, and a sense of responsibility to do the right thing, even if that means admonishing our country's leadership.

Our position may be counter to the opinion of many of our fellow graduates. Our views are most probably not the views of the official institution that is West Point. It does its work, we ours. Yet, we are undeniably full-blown products of that place, trademarked by the West Point way of behavior. "Duty, Honor, Country," the motto of the Academy, our watchwords, as well. And we express our views as an organization of graduates, as retired generals of similar pedigree express their own. The difference? There are more of us than there are generals.

What?

Admiral John Paul Jones, the father of the American navy, said it best. "I would lay down my life for America, but I cannot trifle with my honor." This administration has done neither. Chicken hawks in wolves' clothing, they have been derelict in duty, honor, and country.

Consider their sending under-equipped troops into battle under false pretenses, the widely-known ignoring of Second Amendment protections of the Constitution, the "quaintness" of the Geneva Convention, or Colin Powell's ill-starred, mendacious UN presentation. Their lies and misleading statements, detailed in so many places, have become epic. They tried to make their case. They failed. Facts and time have proven these people untrustworty and incompetent. They lied, tens of thousands died, and that is a moral tragedy.

Shamelessly, the president of the United States mocks his own deceitful behavior at White House Correspondents' Dinners. People have perished from his infamous words, and he and his ilk, and the ilk of journalists, all guffaw and wink and preen. Duty, Honor, Country? Be serious.

Who?

We are graduates of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York who are against the war in Iraq, and any other future wars similarly premised. Our ranks include sons, daughters, and spouses of deceased graduates. All of us stand in common cause against the deceitful policies and lies of the Bush administration. We are heartened by supporters from all over the world, but particularly the American taxpayers who gave and maintain the life of the institution that bore us into the adult world of service to our country. And, in that spirit, we now act.

We are not politicians, professional media pundits, retired generals, peace-at-any-price activists, conscientious objectors, Communists or traitors. We seek to overthrow nothing. Except the pattern of deceit by this administration that has so sorely damaged this country, its standing in the world, and the world itself.

We have no historic legacy of public life that we are out to maintain because we have had no public life. We are ordinary people, forged by one unforgettable unifying experience - West Point. We studied there, we trained there, we were inspired there. We are the voice of a growing band of men and women, graduates of West Point, not perfect people, but honorable. And we speak for the many who, because of their circumstance, are reluctant or unable to speak.

We call likeminded graduates of West Point to stand with us and speak out against the deceitful policies of this administration, and the resulting destruction of the honor of the United States, and the dissipation of its military.

Alarum and call to action

Say no to preventive war. Heed President Eisenhower's words. "When people speak to you about a preventive war," he said, "you tell them to go and fight it."

Say no to torture. Demand that the United States government respect the conventions of war. We must lead by example, preserving some aspect of humanity in the carnage and devastation. Today, we gaze into the abyss of perpetual war. Be aware, as Nietzsche warned, "If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

Say no to the trashing of the honor of our country. Stay the forked tongues of this deplorable administration.

This is not a partisan issue. Both sides of the legislative chambers have aided and abetted this corrupt administration. We exhort everyone to stand with us and to write to their political representatives. We will do the same. Tell them that you don't appreciate their silence on these vital issues. Tell them to support and defend the Constitution as they have sworn to do. Demand honorable behavior from all public officials. Tell them how you feel about what THEY have allowed to happen to our country. And tell them that we, West Point Graduates Against The War, sent you. Tell them that we stand with you. It's the truth!

"Now is the time!" Martin Luther King said long ago. Indeed, NOW is the time.

We live on the precipice of yet another "arranged" war. This time it's Iran. As in Iraq, the demonization is well underway. The dogs of war are foaming and gnashing. Deja vu all over again, or, as we used to say at West Point, S.O.S, "Same Old Stuff," or words to that effect.

And all this in the name of homeland security. Please be serious. As Dwight Eisenhower said, "If all that Americans want is security, they can go to prison. They'll have enough to eat, a bed and a roof over their heads. But if an American wants to preserve his dignity and his equality as a human being, he must not bow his neck to any dictatorial government."

Today, we have clear intimations of just such a government. We think that Americans are not so easily cowed, and that the vast majority demands far more than a diet of false statements, and confinement in endless, immoral wars.

New voices can change the world. They always have. Stand with us!

African-American Voters Scrubbed by Secret GOP Hit List
by Greg Palast As reported for Democracy Now!

Palast, who first reported this story for BBC Television Newsnight (UK)
and Democracy Now! (USA), is author of the New York Times bestseller,
Armed Madhouse.

The Republican National Committee has a special offer for
African-American soldiers: Go to Baghdad, lose your vote.

A confidential campaign directed by GOP party chiefs in October 2004
sought to challenge the ballots of tens of thousands of voters in the
last presidential election, virtually all of them cast by residents of
Black-majority precincts.
Files from the secret vote-blocking campaign were obtained by BBC
Television Newsnight, London. They were attached to emails
accidentally sent by Republican operatives to a non-party website.

One group of voters wrongly identified by the Republicans as
registering to vote from false addresses: servicemen and womensent
overseas.

*******
For Greg Palast's discussion with broadcaster Amy Goodman on the Black
soldier purge of 2004, go to
http://gregpalast.com/armedmadhouse/palastDN6-14-06.mp3

*******

Here's how the scheme worked: The RNC mailed these voters letters in
envelopes marked, “Do not forward, to be returned to the sender. These
letters were mailed to servicemen and women, some stationed overseas,
to their US home addresses. The letters then returned to the
Bush-Cheney campaign as "undeliverable."

The lists of soldiers of "undeliverable" letters were transmitted from
state headquarters, in this case Florida, to the RNC in Washington. The
party could then challenge the voters' registration and thereby prevent
their absentee ballot being counted.

One target list was comprised exclusively of voters registered at the
Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Air Station. Jacksonville is third largest
naval installation in the US, best known as home of the Blue Angels
fighting squandron.

See this scrub sheet at
http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=160156...55273706&size=o

Our team contacted the homes of several on the caging list, such as
Randall Prausa, a serviceman, whose wife said he had been ordered
overseas.

A soldier returning home in time to vote in November 2004 could also be
challenged on the basis of the returned envelope. Soldiers challenged
would be required to vote by "provisional" ballot.

Over one million provisional ballots cast in the 2004 race were never
counted; over half a million absentee ballots were also rejected. The
extraordinary rise in the number of rejected ballots was the result of
the widespread multi-state voter challenge campaign by the Republican
Party. The operation, of which the purge of Black soldiers was a small
part, was the first mass challenge to voting America had seen in two
decades.

The BBC obtained several dozen confidential emails sent by the
Republican'snational Research Director and Deputy Communications
chief, Tim Griffin to GOP Florida campaign chairman Brett Doster and
other party leaders.Attached were spreadsheets marked, "Caging.xls."
Each of these contained several hundred to a few thousand voters and
their addresses.

A check of the demographics of the addresses on the "caging lists," as
the GOP leaders called themindicated that most were in
African-American majority zip codes.

Ion Sanco, the non-partisan elections supervisor of Leon County
(Tallahassee) when shown the lists by this reporter said:“The only
thing I can think of - African American voters listed like this –
these might be individuals that will be challenged if they attempted to
vote on Election Day.

These GOP caging lists were obtained by the same BBC team that first
exposed the wrongful purge of African-American "felon" voters in 2000
by then-Secretary of State Katherine Harris. Eliminating the voting
rights of those voters -- 94,000were targeted -- likely caused Al
Gore's defeat in that race.

The Republican National Committee in Washington refused our several
requests to respond to the BBC discovery. However, in Tallahassee, the
Florida Bush campaign's spokespeople offered several explanations for
the list.

Joseph Agostini, speaking for the GOP, suggested the lists were of
potential donors to the Bush campaign.Oddly, the supposed donor list
included residents of theSulzbacher Center a shelter for homeless
families.

Another spokesperson for the Bush campaign, Mindy Tucker Fletcher,
ultimately changed the official response, acknowledging that these were
voters, "we mailed to, where the letter came back – bad addresses.

The party has refused to say why it would mark soldiers as having "bad
addresses" subject to challenge when they had been assigned abroad.

The apparent challenge campaign was not inexpensive. The GOP mailed
the letters first class, at a total cost likely exceeding millions of
dollars, so that the addresses would be returned to "cage" workers.

“This is not a challenge list," insisted the Republican spokesmistress.
However, she modified that assertion by adding,“That’s not what it’s
set up to be.
Setting up such a challenge list would be a crime under federal
law.The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlaws mass challenges of voters
where race is a factor in choosing the targeted group.

While the party insisted the lists were not created for the purpose to
challenge Black voters, the GOP ultimately offered no other explanation
for the mailings. However, Tucker Fletcher asserted Republicans could
still employ the list to deny ballots to those they considered suspect
voters. When asked if Republicans would use the list to block voters,
Tucker Fletcher replied, “Where it’s stated in the law, yeah.

It is not possible at this time to determine how many on the potential
blacklist were ultimately challenged and lost their vote. Soldiers
sending in their ballot from abroad would not know their vote was lost
because of a challenge.

On November 7, Americans throughout our land will vote in mid-term elections for the House and Senate. I am speaking to you today, as the Honorary Chairman of Democrats Abroad, to urge you to join them - wherever you may be in the world.

Voting from beyond our borders is easier than ever before. Democrats Abroad has developed a website that allows you to register to vote and create an absentee ballot request instantly online. Just type in www.VoteFromAbroad.org and you're on your way to making a real difference.

Since leaving the White House, Rosalynn and I have visited more than 120 foreign nations in our work at The Carter Center. In many cases, we've become deeply involved with them in resolving some of their political, health, and agricultural challenges. During the earlier years, their admiration and friendship toward our country was almost universal, and truly heart-warming - in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and throughout the Islamic world. Lately, there has been a drastic and disturbing shift toward distrust, alienation, and outright hatred.

The dramatic deterioration in America's reputation was not caused by a conflict between liberals and conservatives or even between Democrats and Republicans. The unprecedented new American policies are a radical departure from those of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, and also, of course, from those of Democratic presidents. At home, the result has been an unprecedented division among our citizens - exemplified by a sharp delineation between red and blue states.

Many Americans are deeply disturbed, and some are willing to stake their careers on making a change. Our son Jack, for instance, has left the world of agricultural commodities and investment finance to run for the U.S. Senate from Nevada - against a first term incumbent who has voted with the White House 96% of the time during the past five years (compared to Tom Delay's 90%).

We are faced in 2006 with congressional elections of momentous historical importance - more so than at any time in my memory. The outcome will be either an endorsement of Washington's current policies or a great political brake on these ill-advised and destructive trends. There can be no better qualified or objective analysts than Americans, like you, who live overseas and are not unduly swayed by the constant stream of biased news media, like Fox News and the all-pervasive right-wing radio talk shows.

It is imperative that every American citizen living abroad join us in this crusade to change the course of our government by becoming registered to vote and participating fully in the electoral process. Democrats Abroad has made registering to vote and requesting an absentee ballot quick and simple at VoteFromAbroad.org. I invite you to use that website, request your absentee ballot, vote, and make a difference.

Thank you for doing your part to ensure a brighter future for America in the world.

Happy Fourth of July.

Bush for the first time in his Presidency used his veto power and in so doing did it against the good of America. Instead of potentially helping millions of Americans by signing the Stem Cell Bill into law, Bush has decided to force his will on America by vetoing a bill that would allow federal funds to go to the use of unwanted fertilized eggs. An overwhelming 70% of America wants this bill and the Senate passed it 63 to 37 following the House's vote last year, passing it 238 to 194. Yet Mr. Bush would rather the eggs went into the garbage than allow one dime be spent on using them for breakthrough science and medicine.

Myths about overseas voting

Myth #1: Americans dont vote again until 2008.
WRONG. Americans go to the polls on November 7, 2006 for what we call mid-term elections. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate (33 seats) are up for election. For US citizens living abroad, it is important to request an absentee ballot as soon as possible to allow for processing time and international post.

Myth #2: I cant vote. I dont have a US address anymore.
WRONG. Regardless how long you have lived outside the country, you always retain the right to vote in US Federal elections. Your legal voting address is the last place you resided prior to departing the US . (If you have never lived in the US , many states will allow you to vote using the legal voting address of one of your American parents. Check with local authorities.)

Myth #3: I dont need to register. I already did it last time.
WRONG. Voters living abroad should mail in a ballot request every election year. Yes, there is a recent Federal law stating that a single ballot request should be valid for four years. And there are some exceptions, like California which permits permanent absentee registration. But, dont forget that our votes are administered by 3,000 different local authorities across the country, each with its own understanding of the law. Better safe than sorry send a new ballot request each election year!

Myth #4: They dont even count overseas ballots.
WRONG. Absolutely 100% false. By law, every properly executed absentee ballot must be counted before a final vote count can be certified. However, if the number of outstanding ballots overseas or otherwise is smaller than the difference between two candidates, a winner may be called before every last vote has been tallied. But all outstanding ballots are counted before the election result is certified.

Myth #5: One vote cant make a difference.

WRONG. Just look at recent election results. Florida 2000: George W. Bush wins the state by a margin of 537 votes. Washington 2004: Christine Gregoire becomes Governor by just 127 votes. Ohio 2006: The race for a seat on the Erie County Democratic Committee ends in a dead tie!

Myth #6: If I vote, the IRS will hassle me.

WRONG. Voting in US Federal elections does not affect the determination of tax residence. You will not hear from the IRS because you voted in a Federal election including for President, Vice-president, Senate and House. (Note: Voting in state and local elections can potentially affect state and local tax status. We recommend that you seek expert advice before voting in state or local elections.)

Myth #7: Voting from abroad is so complicated.

WRONG. This used to be true! But now, US citizens can complete the entire process of requesting an absentee ballot and spread the word to friends and colleagues in just two minutes flat at www.VoteFromAbroad.org.

CT SEN: Lamont 51.76% | Lieberman 48.24% | 78.87% in smile.gif
Chicago
AND Lieberman has now conceded defeat in the primary biggrin.gif ... BUT ... has anounced that he will run as an "independent" dry.gif he even added:

QUOTE
"It's time for our elected leaders to stop playing political games," Lieberman told supporters late Tuesday in Hartford, Conn. "That's exactly what I'm trying to do."

hmm, loose the Democrat primary, change to Independent and run. noooo, that's not playing political games, is it?.
cinzia
The proof is there now, then. Lieberman wants the Republicans to take over his Senate seat. Why else would he run as an independent and attempt to split what would otherwise be the Democratic vote?
Topsy
I'm surprised nobody started a thread about the Liebermann thing - you guys are slacking tongue.gif

We are happy to forget about him. mad.gif

To: Joe Lieberman

Lieberman rejects primary results:
"I called Ned Lamont and congratulated him on his success today. We've just finished the first half and the Lamont Team is ahead. In the second half, our team, Team Connecticut, is going to surge forward in November. The old politics of polarization won today. For the sake of our state, my country and my party, I cannot and will not let those results stand today," said Joe Lieberman.

We call on Lieberman to abide by the primary results and accept defeat graciously and not to run as an independent. We call on all Democratic Party members to withdraw all support for Lieberman if he runs as an independent following his primary defeat. Furthermore, we pledge to withhold our vote and our dollar for any Democratic candidate who also rejects the Connecticut Democratic primary results and continues to back Lieberman as an independent candidate. The voters of Connecticut have spoken and if Joe Lieberman as a Democrat cannot accept that, then we cannot accept him or any Democrat who supports him.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Spread the petition far and wide. I want a million signatures!

i have USian friends who are democrats and friends who are republicans (nobody's perfect) and listening to them talk about politics then there is a clear difference - but then you look at the parties they vote for and you can hardly tell the difference at all

so i think this is *fab* news
it seems to me looking in from the outside that the democrats in US are just like flippin GOP-lite - it's about time they differentiated themselves, so at least folk have a genuine choice
DrivinWest
Joe Lieberman running as an independent has the potential to be a fucking disaster. I really don't think he'd get that much of the popular vote, and what he would get probably would come from both parties (after all he's a DINO - Democrat In Name Only). In states that matter, however, it could make a BIG difference. Example: I don't see Floridian Republicans voting Lieberman but I sure see a lot of retired New Yorkers who typically vote Democrat voting for him instead. It wouldn't take much to sway the whole state.
cinzia
DrivinWest, I don't get your point. Only people in Connecticut are allowed to vote in their own senatorial race. blink.gif

Am I missing something?

I think DW is referring to the influence that it will have on other races where people may vote for Lieberman by "proxy" and of course it will affect the way the Democratic Party campaigns going into November across the board.
Joe Lieberman's influence by running as an Independent will touch nearly everybody and every race and could become a huge negative impact factor across the US for the Dem Party. OTOH, it could force the Dems to become Dems again, but Lieberman's tone in the last week and his non-concession speech leaves little doubt that Joe is going to be a problem child.

Sorry, I left out a few words:

QUOTE
Joe Lieberman running for president as an independent in 2008 has the potential to be a fucking disaster.

Once an independent he's an independent. Period. His 2008 aspirations are no secrert.
cinzia
Bah. I wouldn't worry about Lieberman's impact on a presidential run as an independent. I don't think he has the fund-raising capacity. It's not like he's hugely popular.
Sin
Great result, but Ohio is going to be more important.

What are the chances of Arnie being turned over as CA. Gov?
cinzia
Hurrah! The Republicans are propping up Lieberman now:

QUOTE
Meanwhile, the GOP used Lieberman's loss to paint Democrats as sissies. "It's an unfortunate development, I think, from the standpoint of the Democratic Party, to see a man like Lieberman pushed aside because of his willingness to support an aggressive posture in terms of our national security strategy,'' said VP Cheney.

This seems like an unwise move on the part of Cheney. Because of the possibility that the Connecticut senate race will be a 3-way battle in November (Dem/Repub/Independent Joe), the Republican national leadership might NOT want to make Lieberman look like a good choice for voters who would otherwise go for the Republican candidate.

I'd stand back and let the Dems potentially split their constituency, without loss to the Republican side if I were Cheney.
gemini
From what I have read they are not too concerned with the Repub candidate winning, as apparently he has been caught gambling under another name, and is thought of as pretty smarmy.

Joe L. is indicitive of the problems with politics and power. He just can't walk away.

I also think he is HUGELY supported by the Jewish lobby, and they are none too keen to lose a Pro-Israel (at all costs) mouth piece.

I wouldn't rule him out winning as an Independent, as pathetic as that is.
cinzia
gemini, maybe you're right. Maybe the Republican national leadership figures their guy won't win, so their second choice is Lieberman.
eurovol
QUOTE
Just last month he mustered a fifteen-point lead over Ned Lamont in a projected three-way general election contest (with Lamont as the Democrat and Lieberman as an Independent). Now, Lieberman’s lead has disappeared. In this month’s three-way match-up, Lamont and Lieberman each get 40% of the vote. The Republican, Alan Schlesinger, attracts just 13%.

Lamont is going to win in November too. Liebermn is just gonna force the Dems to waste money campaigning agaist his self serving ass. dry.gif

Dean's words of wisdom:

Lieberman should drop out of race.

QUOTE
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record) should bow out of the November's congressional race altogether after his defeat in Connecticut's Democratic primary, a top Democrat said on Sunday.
Lieberman, a three-term senator and Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, lost to political newcomer Ned Lamont in Connecticut on Tuesday and said he plans to run as an independent in the November election.

Of course. It's the best way he can help his buddy Bush. It seems Liberman's gone to the dark side and is counting on cashing in by helping the GOP. Inspection of his donations will lead back to the Bush cronies and groups.
