After the usual searches it seems not.
Anyone?

I was wondering about this just yesterday. I looked into washing machine rental last year, and discovered that it's basically not done. I only found one company offering it; the shortest contract was two years and it would have been cheaper to buy a new one.
Since TVs are generally cheaper than washing machines, I would imagine the best thing to do is just go out and buy one. There's often old ones listed for sale or for free here on Toytown.

I was hoping to rent a really big nice TV just for the World Cup and I was imagining something like a 6 month minimum rental period. Not gonna happen by the looks of it.
It seems thast the concept of ´renting´ consumer goods (TV´s and Washing machines for example) generally does not exist in Germany? In the UK, you can rent anything...

Google should be your friend on this one.
Having done a quick search, I have come up with the following links

The first link has a minimum rental period of 4 years. As with the washing machines, you're not so much renting as buying on credit.

Google is, I guess your German is better than mine.
Anyway, having looked at both of those links, rental period is between 36 months and 60 months depending on price of TV. Somehow I suspect this might be the case in each of the very few places that actually offer the service...
Oh well, I will just have to buy a normal old telly, I´ll cope somehow.

or just go down the pub to watch the games you're interested in?
will the standard telly channels be showing the matches, does anybody know? or will people have to subscribe to premiere?

All the games will be on ARD, ZDF or RTL. Even when two games are on at the same time one should be on ARD and the other on ZDF. Say what you like about German telly, but the fact they can keep most of the major sporting events on the 'normal' channels is great, IMO

@BR: ITV and the BBC share all the World Cup games between them, so not only can you watch all the games on terrestial TV in Britian but you can enjoy vaguely decent commentary as well. I'm watching the snooker on Eurosport at the moment, and the German commentary is appallingly, cringingly bad.

Yeah, unfortunately the remote control is a replacement, so it doesn't have that magic button. If it ever did; the TV is only a cheap 14" job.
Unless there's another way of changing the language...

I think that's his name. He does know quite a lot about snooker, but it seems he doesn't want to confuse the viewers by offering any kind of tactical analysis of the game. He just talks about the rules, about the longest games, about whether it's best for the players to wear glasses or contact lenses, etc etc. Shame; I think the viewers would learn more about the game if he was analysing it rather than talking about snooker generally.
