The 11-nation commission in charge of the vast Nazi German archive documenting war crimes have agreed to open it up to public access. The move came after a meeting in Luxembourg and ends months of wrangling over privacy issues. The 47 million files hold Nazi records of forced labourers, concentration camp victims and political prisoners.

Many people felt the files should be opened to historical researchers to ensure the details of the Holocaust are not forgotten.

That would be tragic - but I believe as human beings we are still making the mistakes of the past. Do we ever learn? sad.gif

After six decades under the shadows Germany has decided to make available for historians, and soon to the general public, a large collection of about 50 million documents of the Nazi Germany. These documents are located in the small city of Bad Arolsen. They are arranged in racks which make up to 25 thousand meters of documentation.

The Nazi regime was very detailed on the information that they recorded. Everything from how much food was given to each person to detailed descriptions about the deaths of millions are written on these files. This information was until now only available to the relatives of those who were victims of the holocaust.

The archive was created in 1943 and since 1955 it has been managed by the International Red Cross. In 1998 was the first time that the possibility of making the contents of these archives available to the public was discussed.
