A review of a Saturday night out in Munich

Saturday night and we were off again.

First stop was the Hard Rock Cafe in Tal as I expected there to be a bit of live music on. (incidentally, worth going on the 7th or 8th of Feb as Gary & Gerry and their Used Underwear are playing. My favourite cover band). Nothing doing, but stayed in the bar area for a couple of drinks (although I do hate Ayinger) with the predominantly American crowd. I enjoy it for a couple of beers as there's usually good music.

Next stop was over to Kilian's to meet up with a couple of friends. Place was stuffed, but we managed to get a plot in the back room.

Decided to head off to this new Prinzip place where O'Reillys used to be. Closed door policy which always pisses me off. Anyway, bouncer boy asks if we have invitations. I immediately said 'Yes' and of course he then asked to see it. This wasn't part of my ill-conceived plan. Bouncers don't really have much of a sense of humour. Anyway, that was that. I reckon we were too old or just didn't fit into the profile he'd been given for the night and it wasn't going to happen. Four blokes together is rarely the best combination for getting past a doorman. Think I'll give it another chance and arrive with a cute girl. That usually does the job.

So, after that we headed over the road to Schumann's, and lo and behold it was closed. Something about moving to a new location, although I'm really not sure and that couldn't be possible, could it?

After two disappointments, we headed into the Havanna Club. I do like this place when I'm in the mood for Rum n' Cokes. Had a couple there but it was a little lacking in atmosphere so it was time to move on. Plus, one of the guys with us was new to the idea of the crawl and we had to keep him interested. His original comment back in Kilian's was something like "but if you have a table and the waitress brings you beers, why would you want to move to another bar?".

And this is where things went weird. After leaving Havanna Club we were heading in richtung Padres when we came across a bar just over on the left after Isartor. I've no idea what it was called. As we went in it was almost like a scene from an old Western with all conversations suddenly stopping and everyone staring at the new arrivals. Undeterred we steamed in and headed straight for the bar to get the beers in. Turned out the clientelle consisted soley of Munichs young Serbian population and so our arrival (an Irishman, an Englishman and 2 Germans) caused a bit of commotion. A bit later on over several free and fast flowing Tequilas, the barman told me that most people who just wander in are quite intimidated by the place and don't stay. Apparently the fact that we did meant we were friends and welcome. We didn't pay for a single drink in the place. So beers flowed, tequila's were shot (?) and conversation ranged from why all Serbians hate the English (which didn't fill my mate full of joy, although they did say he was ok and it was really just Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher who they hate) to the bloke who became a Serbian skin-head just because he hated having curly locks.

After closing time, they were heading off to a party in KPO. Myself and the by now, not-hated-Englishman, jumped in a cab and headed out to meet up with them. We couldn't find the bar they had said, mostly because neither of us could remember the name of it.

And so we decided that the sensible thing would be to call it a night and head home... well, that would have been the sensible thing to do.

Sunday was written off entirely.

Just realised, of course Schumann's was closed, it was Saturday. What a muppet.
