Anyone know where I can buy chocolate chips (for baking) in Munich? Have already checked the usual places-Hertie at Hauptbahnhof, Hit, Kaufhof etc...

Thanks!

those shops should have them in the baking section. They're in little paper boxes though, not bags.

Chocolate chips are oddly elusive, sometimes I see them in random places - even Tengelman for example - but never consistently. I think someone posted the german substitute "schocko tropfen" which supposedly can be found in a box in the bakery aisles of the larger stores. Haven't tried myself but possibly worth investigating. Also, the guide to British and American foods, it *might* have chips listed.

I have looked for something like chocolate chips with little success. What you could do is just get some bars of zart bitter schokolade and cut it in small pieces (choco chip sizes) and use them for baking. It works very good. Also if you want to bake choco chip cookies you could use smarties or m&m's instead chocolate chips. It will add some color to your cookies but it will also make them a bit drier. So you may add a bit of shortening to make them softer.

Use Milka bars and chop them up into chip size pieces.

They are called Schokotropfen (largest brand name is Schwartau) and can be found in the baking aisle of most supermarkets - even small ones.

Errrrm even the low class ones like PennerMarkt where I shop have 'em! cool.gif

Well, when I was in Munich I searched through many a shop, and few had them. My Minimal out in Ismaning carried the Lilliput Schokotropfen for awhile, but that was ages ago. Then for awhile Penny carried some, but they were exorbitantly priced so that they were not worth it. They discontinued them. I checked all the shops at Hauptbahnhof and my local Penny, Tengelmann, etc.

Most of those German variety things are too small and the wrong consistency. They don't bake the same. Chopping up Milka bars is as close to the Hershey's chips as I have found. A little extra work, but worth it and especially for Toll House Cookies.

No way, not Milka bars - definitely zartbitter.

There is more than one variety of Milka bars.

Forget Milka, even "Chavbrand" chocolate at PennerMarkt has a higher cocoa content. smile.gif

I have been making choco chip cookies almost every week. God I love em!
I chop up zartbitter and it works quite nicely. My beef with making choco chip cookies here is that I cant find REAL vanilla extract!!! Was ist dees Aroma crap!!
interplanetjanet
Why don't you just use Vanillazucker? It works just fine.

You can make a large batch, roll up individual balls and store them in the freezer. No need to defrost. Just take and bake however many you want, when you want. Works a treat. smile.gif

Vanilla
Reformhäuser oddly enough will have liquid vanilla as Americans are used to it. In small brown bottles of 1/2 oz. The teeny-tiny clear glass bottles of vanilla sold in four-packs are different from your usual McCormick's. Vanilla sugar can be substituted, but you have to adjust your recipe's sugar total. Also look at the Mexican Food page -- at least one Mexican shop also had the brown liquid vanilla in a big bottle.

You can buy the premade chocolate chip batter at WalMart now. They have: chocolate chip, chocalate chocolate chip, choco chip with almonds and one other. It's made by Neslte. Satisfied my craving for chocolate chip cookies it did!
