Every year on April 12

This was a really big deal in Houston, TX where I attended the previous five years. Always a huge turnout, and always a rockin' party considering it was mostly space geeks. I was excited to see on their website that there will be a Yuri's Night party in Munich this year, but there was no information as to where. Well, ok, it gives the lat/lon: 48°08'00"N, 011°35'00"E, but not sure what establishment that corresponds to or what time etc.. I have emailed the organizer to get details, but in the mean time if anyone has information, is interested in checking this out, or has been to one in Europe previously, please post here. Otherwise, I will update when I hear more.

Celebrating Yuri Gagarin and the Space Shuttle

People everywhere love to party. Most parties don’t require a special reason or significant event. But when the celebration in question marks something as extraordinary as the dawn of human spaceflight, expect a HUGE party.

That party is Yuri’s Night, celebrated in dozens of cities around the world, on ALL seven continents. Yes, even Antarctica occasionally throws a Yuri’s Night party, and residents of the International Space Station have even been known to join in on the fun.

But who is this Yuri, and why are thousands of people worldwide celebrating him?

Yuri’s Night is the global celebration of human space travel, held annually on April 12. Yuri’s Night commemorates both the historic first flight of Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, as well as the launch of the first Space Shuttle (STS-1) exactly 20 years later. This year we’re celebrating the 45th anniversary of Yuri’s flight and the 25th anniversary of STS-1, so we expect the highest turnout ever!

With Yuri’s Night consisting of dance parties, educational events and even casual get-togethers, the range of Yuri’s Night events is as diverse as the people that host them. Whether in someone’s living room, a swinging nightclub or a world-class science museum, Yuri’s Night events all have one thing in common - people who are excited about the past, present and future of space travel and want to have a great time celebrating it.

Pretty cool way to advert the location. Google earth has the ability to input lat and long doesn't it?
Keydeck
Seems to be on Zweibrückenstr between Isartor and the river.

Bubble Gum
Oooh Pizza Hut Party!!
winglette
laugh.gif I hope not!
Bubble Gum
Nah Pzza Hut is further down the street on the corner. It looks like that place is the UBahn or coffee fellows.
Tobi
At first, I suspected Forum der Technik at Deutsches Museum, but it looks like host Andi Krusel is a member of the http://www.vfr.de/ (Verein zur Förderung der Raumfahrt e.V.) - thus, a privately hosted event?

Herzlichst,
Tobi

From memory, located approximately at the coordinates marked on Keydeck's satellite image are: a branch of the Shere Punjab Indian restaurant, and the second branch of the Sushi Sano Japanese restaurant. I'm not saying the party is located at either of these places. I'm just pointing the information out for reference.

By the way, winglette's post has taken this event into the blogsphere.
arshoo
then if it is Sher-e-Punjab the theme should be

Yuri Loves Tandoori!! biggrin.gif
Jeeves
If they're giving co-ordinates to the nearest minute then it could be almost anywhere in the centre of Munich.
However the third dimension is missing. How high above Munich will it be?
Ura
Just letting people know that Yuri's night in Munich has been cancelled.

Pity.
Editor Bob
Thanks for the info. But how do you know this? Why is it cancelled and where was it supposed to have taken place?

Edit: Apparently the guy in charge has been emailed and he says it has been cancelled due to "lack of manpower".
Gen
If a bunch of people show up, it'll happen anyway, right? Can't people just make their own party?
Ura
I'm up for that Gen.
Bubble Gum
Pizza Party!!! biggrin.gif
Ura
I'm reliably informed that Yuri loved pizza...hence, a very fitting tribute.

Just realised - tomorrow, April 12th, is once again Yuri's Night, when parties are held all over the world to celebrate space:

Yuri Gagarin was the first human to go into space on April 12th, 1961. The US Space Shuttle first launched on April 12th, 1981. Yuri's Night is like the St Patricks Day or Cinco de Mayo for space. It is one day when all the world can come together and celebrate the power and beauty of space and what it means for each of us. Join us!

Check their web site (link above) to find out if there's an event taking place near you. Checking their map for Germany, it looks like there will be parties in or near Kiel, Hamburg, Bremen, Darmstadt, Stuttgart, and just across the border in Strasbourg.
