hey all!

i've been trying to get rid of this old armoir that came with the apartment i'm renting. i've tried to give it away for free here on the site, but got no replies. i've also heard that there's a compny that picks up old furniture for free (or at least for a small fee)...but i can't find them on the net. does anyone know if this firma actually exists? and if so, how can they be contacted?

thanx

A couple of years ago I came across a 'company' somewhere near or in Trudering. They are set up by the local authority and 'employ' previously unemployed craftsmen.
They will collect unwanted furniture (in almost any condition) from within Munich and their craftsmen do full restorations and then sell the furniture onwards.

From what I remember:
They do not buy the furniture, but they will pick it up free of charge.

I will look into this as I have the details somewhere and I will post further details later.

It's a city agency, actually. Information can be found here: AWM München

The standard service costs €27 per 15 minutes of work. However, this is not for people who want it done tomorrow - the average wait is 6 weeks from date of registration!

Luckily they have an express service, but it's more expensive. This costs €65 for the first 15 minutes of work and then €40 for further 15 minute blocks. All of the fees include transportation etc. - all inclusive.

Phone number is 233-96200.

If you call them by 11:30 they can pick up (express service) on the same day. Otherwise, basic rules are that they only take things that can be carried by two people. This certainly includes couches and the like.

I will double check, but I really think the one I came across is something different.

I bought something on Ebay (greatest bargain ever! But that's a different story) and when we went to collect we found a thriving little 2nd hand furniture business with 'shop' open for all to look in.

OK, it took quite some finding again as we lost all original details, however, I was referring to "Anderwerk".

This was started by a collaboration between The City of Munich, Bezirk Oberbayern, EU Social Funds and the Arbeitsamt as an attempt to help get people back into work.
They specialise in offering positions to long-term unemployed, older craftsmen who just can't get jobs due to their age, handicapped people and also youngsters who didn't get the best start in life but are willing to learn.

If you live in Munich, they will come along and collect old unwanted furniture, they do not charge for taking it away, but they will not pay for the furniture.
Their craftsmen then renovate the furniture and it goes into their showroom for sale. Thus making a profit, keeping people in work and offering good furniture at a great discount!

As I mentioned, I came across these people two or three years ago and was amazed at what they were doing.
It is a cause well worth supporting.

So, if you have unwanted furniture, speak to them, it could be ideal for them.
Alternatively, pop along to their premises and see what they have to offer if you need to get something cheap, but also serviceable.

I also remember they offered "White goods" (Fridges, washing machines, freezers ...etc)
