@cinzia: Hmm, I don't remember my acquaintance saying anything about rubbing the lion's nose. In fact, I didn't even know that about the bad luck, though I've lived here for years.

By the way, I also have that book you mentioned above, "Hitler and Munich". Great book. Looking at the old photos of Hitler-related locations and then seeing the same places today, really brings it home to you that those events really happened here, and not too long ago. Last year I was in the police station at Prinzregentenplatz (of my own free will, mind). From what I can make out from the book, this is in the house where Hitler lived during the 1930's, and his apartment would have been just one floor above the room where I was sitting. Creepy feeling.

Hey, GT, I was just having some fun about the lion's nose rubbing thing.

If you stand in Residenzstrasse near Odeonsplatz, you will notice the "locals" rubbing the noses of the brass lions "guarding" the entrances to some of the Residenz courtyards as they walk by. Or just notice that the noses are a lot shinier than the rest of the lions if you happen to walk by there. I don't know if they do it for luck, and I also don't know if there's a particular "correct" lion whose nose you're supposed to rub. Seems to be random.

I assume the Münchners have always done this, so they must have been quite busy in that area back in the Hitler era, what with having to rub a lion's nose and then either do the Hitler Grüß or else duck down the Viscardigasse to avoid doing so! (Or the other way round, first the Grüß/alleyway and then the lions.)

Hey, GT, I was just having some fun about the lion's nose rubbing thing.

Ah ... I see ... you had me worried there for a moment ... thought those big bad lions were gonna get me 'cos I never rubbed their noses.

Oh and BTW - sorry, this has absolutely nothing to do with the current topic - but if anyone can give an idiot newbie like me a hint on how to include a quote from a post (so that you get the poster's name and date next to where it says QUOTE), then I owe them a beer - this is driving me crazy!

I'll take your beer smile.gif

Press Quote + at bottom of somebody's post before adding reply

Magic! It works! Thanks!! biggrin.gif
(I had already tried pressing Quote+, but didn't realise you had to do it before ADDREPLY.)

Now I just have to make it to a TT drinking event sometime...

OK, sorry everyone for the digression, now back to war time Munich...
