"a brisk 160km"

Tench, you know how to motivate people to join you... wink.gif
Pascoe
Tench actually lied, it was only a 'brisk 150km in a few hills'...
MPIchaos
Well, I just did a brisk 80km with quite a few hills and I'm certainly feeling it, so it looks like I'm not quite fit enough for a Tench death march. Maybe in June...

Shame I couldn't go on Saturday - maybe next weekend (my wife will have a new shiny bike then and no reasons not to go on a long trip ...)

I suggest taking the train to Kufstein - you can then get an approximately 40km and 500 m climb "warmup" before getting to the road going up the Spitzingsee ... (or go over the Sudelfeld and then towards the Chiemgau).
hurricane
what about starting in Kochel, riding over to the Walchersee, then up the Eng tal? can ride to tegernsee after to avoid a total out an back. this is a wicked ride!

also...does anyone know of any good deals on frames, 54. my beautiful, beautiful bike has a dent on the back end of the frame and I am being forced to take it out to the field to shoot it. not happy about this but it's not safe to ride on. sigh...

Markus, we could have done with you there on saturday smile.gif
Kept taking wrong turns and coming to dead ends. unsure.gif

Wasn't too warm around spitzingsee either, in fact there is still over 30cm of snow at the side of the road. Plus, it was raining too and I'd only taken a sleeveless jersey. sad.gif

Sorry about that. I did run 10km after to make up the extra distance though wink.gif

Well - if I am guessing correctly, what they did was Schliersee - Spitzingsee - Valepp - Rottach (i.e. Tegernsee) - Achenpass - Sylvensteinsee - Eng - Wallgau - Walchensee - then either to Lenggries or Kochel

so, your suggestion was part of it

I agree - very beautiful up there, definitely great as part of a longer bit (you're talkin a maxium of 6-700 m climb on that route, the one above has something like 1400 m climb in it ...)

Any takers for a "brisk" tour through the mountains on Sunday (can't really do tomorrow, unfortunately)?

Weather forecast at the moment isn't that great, but maybe it'll change by tomorrow.

Sort of plan would be to cycle up from Kufstein (about 1h by train from Hauptbahnhof - leave around 7.40 or 8.40) to Bayrischzell and the on from there either into the Chiemgau or in some way hilly to Lenggries and back from there. That would allow for "break out" routes for anyone not wanting to do the full distance in case it's more than two going.

I'll keep an eye on the weather forecast - I just wouldn't really want to cycle in torrential rain all day.

I'm signed up for the Garda Marathon, but not Tegernsee... yet.

Hi Wunn,

I rode past you in Garda, I think I muttered something like " you go singlespeeder"
Anyway, I rode the GRande. I am signed up for the Tegernsee as well as the garmisch matrathon, Pfronten and some others.

I rode the Garmisch strecke, again, yesterday and will probably do it next weekend. I ride with another Ami. Lemme know if you wanna go up with us the next time. We will also ride arond tegernsee some time soon.

Ciao,

I'm also interested in a Tegernsee pre-training-marathin loop as well, however, I shall be using gears...

Right - I have been advised to put the suggestion onto this thread.

The offer is on to anyone to join Bron and myself for a "brisk 160km including a few hills" on Saturday. Leave Hauptbahnhof (tracks 5-10) at 7.41 to Kufstein (change at Rosenheim).

The suggested ride from there on is in the thread "bringing a road bike to Munich".

Should it turn out that there are sufficient numbers - there are plenty of opportunities for taking shortcuts (or dropping out early).
tench
Looks a good route markus. I'm back in the UK this weekend so won't be able to make it though. Guess it would also be possible to ride back to munich too on the end, with an extra 80km downhill or so. Maybe one for the end of the month.. smile.gif
Bron
Well we ended up doing 125km, with 1580m of climbing, starting in Kufstein and finishing in Klais.
The worst climb was definately the one up to Spitzingsattel (500m, will have to practice that one a bit.

Markus could have carried on for longer, but the "lanterne rouge" of the party (that's me), got rather less brisk after the 100km mark, so we decided to cut it a bit shorter.

Bron
Bron
Apparantly it's *only* 380m up to Spitzingsattel. I stand corrected. Anyway, it felt like 500 and I was very glad to have a triple chainring.

OK - for those interested, the routing of the above tour in detail:

To Kufstein take the Salzburg train from Munich and change in Rosenheim onto the train to Innsbruck.
Kuftstein Bahnhof -- turn right when you get out of the station and then follow the signs to Zell (go over the bridge over the railway line). when you come to the intersection with the main road, turn right and go up to the roundabout where you leave towards "Thiersee, Bayrischzell" - follow that road - it will climb up about 200 m over 3 km before you reach the Thierseetal. Keep on this road, following signs for Landl, Bayrischzell, the road goes up and down a bit, bit overall you gain about 100-200m of altitude. In Landl, there is, in principle a toll road to the Ackernalpe (some grumpy and impolite native at the barrier wouldn't let us through, though, and said we should use the bike route - which he wouldn't tell us if it was tarmac or not - it most likely is not). To get to Bayrischzell, just follow the main road you were on, soon you will reach the Ursprungpass and the old broder checkpoint when entering Germany again. The road will tkae you down in a gentle decent to Bayrischzell, turn left there and follow the road in direction of Schliersee. Before you get to Neuhaus, there is a left turn to Spitzingsee - that road takes you to Spitzingsattel in 360m and 3.8 km, maximum ascent is 14%. From Spitzingsattel, the road goes down to Spitzingsee, then follow the road to Valepp (there is a barrier) - nice long way down - watch out for the bus (take up the entire road). In Valepp (parking lot) turn right and follow the small road (it takes you up to Wechsel and Monialm and then down to Rottach-Egern) - on Saturday, there was a small patch of snow left at 920 m. Shortly after the toll booth at the bottom of this road (cycles are free), there is a turnoff to the left signposted "Wallbergbahn" and closed for motorised traffic - follow that and follow the signs for "VIA TYROLENSIS BAVARICA" until you reach the Bundesstrasse towards Achensee (basically, you go around the Wallberg). Follow this road (it was rather busy, especially with noisy motorbikes) to Achenpass (roadsign), then follows a rather steep descent until you come to a turnoff to the right to Sylvenstein. Follow that until you reach the Sylvensteindamm, cross it and turn left at the end to Wallgau. Follow signs to Wallgau (will turn into toll road - again, cycles free). In Wallgau, we then turned left to Krün, in Krün right to Barmsee - then follow the signs to Klais. When you get to Klais, cross the level crossing at the station (trains every hour to Munich from there).

Markus, Bron - just want to thank you guys for putting the details up. I did this trip today and had your instructions in my hand! Its definitely not a cappucino ride, esp. Spitzingseesattel (I don't have a third ring!) but the views today were exhilerating.

I think there is maybe one addition you could make to the tour description. At the Wallberg path you come to a T junction which itself isn't very well marked so I wasn't sure which way to go but headed for Tegernsee and the train which I just missed and ended up pushing on an extra 35km or so to HohenSiegetsbrunn S bahn which brought my total to 110km.

I look forward to doing that trip again!

ps I did stop for a cappucino, actually a full meal! (on the Valepp pass)

Does any road biker fancy doing this trip this Saturday? Would propose to get a train to Kufstein at ca. 10.30am.

Another update on this trip...

If you want to make it onto 150km trip from Kufstein follow as above but from the bottom of Valepp, follow the signs to Bad Wiesee, then Bad Tolz (20km), Wolfratshausen (25km from BT) and from there to Munich (30km). You can also go via Tegernsee, Holzkirchen but I've tried both and find the first route to be a bit quieter and more scenic.

a tired Enda Storey!

I do a lot of road biking south of Munich, especially in the Alps, however my friends all consider me crazy. I'm not that hardcore, can manage maybe 60/70 miles a day in the Alps. Anyone up for coming along, I know several fantastic routes.
sessions
I will be in Munich next weekend, May17th-20th. Is anyone up for some road biking? We could either bike around Munich (Starnberger See/Ammer See) or take the BOB south and suffer in the mountains.
nataras
Hi Sessions, I would be interested. just send you a PM!!
Xpet
Not sure if people are aware of this, but there's a route planner also for bikes on www.bayerninfo.de that spits out pretty detailed maps in pdf-format. You can actually specify your mode of transportation, but by selecting only 'bicycle' the tool gives you bike-suitable streets only. Enjoy.

@nataras and expatrach,

I sent you a PM, we will see if we can get something organized. We need to figure out what day(s) and where!! At this point I would suggest we start with something around Starnberger See and/or Ammer See on Thursday morning.

I am looking for my map...

@xpet - I am trying to get that mapping website to work but no luck yet.

Hello

I would also be interested. Please post more details once you decide on it.

Sorry everyone, I am backing out. It is pissing down rain in Heidelberg and it looks the same for Munich for Thur. and Friday. I cannot get my new Thule bike carrier attached either so I have to leave either the bike or the kids at home. The wife says it has to be the bike.

I will try again the next time I come to Munich.

Planning on touring a bit of Bavaria for some days 1.Sept.07 to 13.Sept.07, starting from and returning to munich. Self supported (i.e. carry 15-20kg in panniers) staying at either campsites or hostels. hoping for between 75 and 125 miles a day, as a warm up before cyling to Croatia with a mate on the 14th. Any tips, advice or interest from other riders is gratefully received!
