Just read in the FT that this week Munich overtook London when measured by the number of destinations offered.

Apparently you can fly to 179 destinations from here as opposed to 178 from Heathrow.

Of the top five, four are in my opinion the worst airports around:

1. Frankfurt 233 destinations
2. Paris CdG 220
3. Amsterdam Schiphol 203
4. Munich 179
5. London Heathrow 178

all we need now is EasyJet to make Munich a hub... rolleyes.gif

These are interesting stats, considering Heathrow is the biggest and busiest airport in Europe something like third or fourth in the world and offers only 178 destinations compared to Frankfurt's 233 !

Guess it just means that Heathrow flies to where people want, and arn't really bothered about the other locations !

Munich has a lot of seasonal pikey flights to Malaga, Ibiza etc. Heathrow has virtually none of these; charter flights from London mostly depart from Luton and Gatwick. Bear in mind that Munich only has one airport, which caters for business travellers, charter flights and budget airlines. London has four airports, each of which cater mostly for only one of those categories.

Number of destinations is a bit misleading because some places
might only have 1-2 flights per week (maybe also only
seasonally) using small aircraft.

By number of passengers, Munich is down at number 7.

I was surprised that Munich was so high on both lists because
it has never appeared to me to be an especially big airport --
there is no "skytrain", no bus rides between terminals and no
really high gate numbers that take for ever to reach.

Munich is a very well-designed airport in my opinion - there aren't any buses between terminals because the terminal buildings are only 100 yards apart!

It is common, however, to have to take a bus from the gate to the plane, as the terminal buildings aren't big enough for all the planes to park at the gates themselves. I thought the new terminal would sort that out, but I've still been bussed to the plane when using Terminal 1.

Well said STB. Munich gets my vote for pure ease. I think CDG has to be the worst international airport Ive ever had the displeasure of using. Its a pain in the ass, dreary and shopless. Very bad show for the French I think.

When I fly back to the UK I tend to use EasyJet and have always been bussed with them. Either flying out or back in.

When I first started flying to Munich on business the airport was at Riems and was indeed rather old and tired looking.

I remember when the new airport was built, Munich wasn't a hub and outside of skiing season, was always rather deserted.

Goodness, how things change in not too many years!
