Don't Gymnasium students go one extra year than in the the States?
What would a safe answer be?
"Final year of school before college" seems accurate and safe, but a tad long.

Translating this to American English
9. Klasse in NOT the final year before college in Germany, that would be the 12. or 13. Klasse depending on the bundesland.
9.Klasse puts you at about 14/15 years old depending on the bundesland. I would hazard a guess at this being about Junior High school level.

Just say "9th grade". 9th grade is usually "freshman year" of high school, but I know that there are some junior high schools that have 9th grade too. So you're probably safest saying 9th grade.
Who knows - maybe Tomassino stopped after 9th grade
