My favorite quote today
QUOTE
While the naive public often assumes that anyone who speaks two languages is qualified to be a translator, that assumption is no more valid than the conclusion that everyone with a brain is qualified to do brain surgery...

Hope to see you there!

Umberto Eco has a great book on what is required to be a translator. Really impressive.
It may be titled, "Experiences in Translation" (2000)

Johnny Who? has procured a reservation at the Twisted for us. We could even sit in the back with the books, I suppose.

um (sawing noises of can of worms being opened) so the Twisted is evidently still going then, my razor-sharp intellect tells me...

At the risk of opening another can of worms...
I hope it's not as noisy as the section where the January meeting was held, because for those of us seated close to the corner
the music was pretty much deafening. If this time around we want to talk shop as opposed to simply socialising, it would help
if we could actually hear one another and have a proper discussion.
DDBug
Apr 2 2006, 12:11 pm
Most translator's stammtisches (sp?) involve a lot of socializing because it is such a solitary career. There are plenty of organized seminars on offer.
Though no one has yet presented a proper agenda, or suggestions of other locations that might be quieter, we could certainly discuss prices and self-marketing and future meetups.
(I don't feel up to getting infront of 25 people and hosting a panel discussion, but certainly wouldn't mind if someone wanted to!! )
After speaking to people at the stammtisch and privately, I think most people would be shocked at the price ranges offered. Another topic that might be of interest to many people could be the use of CMS systems (CATs) in translation - why, which ones, cost / use and ROI. ... Darn it, now I've started and I actually have work to do today...
I have nothing against socialising, on the contrary. I am not suggesting a panel discussion complete with
keynote speakers, PowerPoint presentations and what not, either. All I'm saying is that last time the music
was so loud that some of us couldn't hear ourselves think.
DDBug
Apr 2 2006, 3:55 pm
gotcha - will definately mention that to him. (Though I was hoping someone would volunteer to chair a discussion

)
We actually asked at least half a dozen times (conservative estimate) for it to be turned down
but I guess we lacked the necessary authority - that's where you come in!

Actually, the table closer to the bar (across from the bar) is probably the quietest one on the place, for some weird reason, except for the second "niche" area. depending on how many we are, we can adjust as needed.

Hi Laura - no, not that I know of. I think proz is more into PowWows. I would like to put it up again in the fall.
Contacting 4 different networking groups and 3 different emails, and various translator web pages is a bit time consuming - next time I will concentrate on the MUC-Trans group and mail list, so hopefully everyone who is interested in keeping up to date will sign up there (yahoo group) I will bring the infos tonight
Sorry, won't be able to make it. No babysitter :-(
