My favorite quote today

QUOTE
While the naive public often assumes that anyone who speaks two languages is qualified to be a translator, that assumption is no more valid than the conclusion that everyone with a brain is qualified to do brain surgery...

Yes, we are going to meet up again
- location not yet set (open to ideas)
to chat, network, discuss prices, rates, tools, organizations, and anything else that sounds interesting.

Hope to see you there! smile.gif
Elfenstar
spot-on quote. people always assume i can quickly translate their germany texts to english.

i'm not a translator, but have fun tonight.
Eleanor Rigby
I'm not a translator but I wouldn't mind sharing ideas.

I'll be along if that's ok.
DDBug
Of course. See you there. (Well, once we figure out for certain where 'there' will be smile.gif )
brokenm
Umberto Eco has a great book on what is required to be a translator. Really impressive.
It may be titled, "Experiences in Translation" (2000)
DDBug
Do you mean Experiences in Translation?

Translator's meetup

shouldn't that be Translators' meetup? wink.gif
DDBug
doh! well, maybe there will only be one ...
boomtown_rat
I'll be organising an annoying smart arses' meetup later...
DDBug
laugh.gif looks like you'll have a lot of TTers there then wink.gif
Eleanor Rigby
I would like to nominate Boomer as Chairperson.

Is this a case of two weeks going by in a blink? blink.gif
alala
I'm gonna try to make it to this one.
quadrivium
I would also like to come if possible - I haven't translated full-time for a while now, would like to get back into it though.
Natalia
I'll be there
crusoe
Any update on where this will be held? I'd like to come if I can shovel some deadlines out of the way
(back to the pit face)
DDBug
whoops - yes that could be helpful

Johnny Who? has procured a reservation at the Twisted for us. We could even sit in the back with the books, I suppose.
crusoe
Would help to create the right atmosphere all right smile.gif
Thanks for the info!
crusoe
um (sawing noises of can of worms being opened) so the Twisted is evidently still going then, my razor-sharp intellect tells me...

At the risk of opening another can of worms... ph34r.gif
I hope it's not as noisy as the section where the January meeting was held, because for those of us seated close to the corner
the music was pretty much deafening. If this time around we want to talk shop as opposed to simply socialising, it would help
if we could actually hear one another and have a proper discussion.
DDBug
Most translator's stammtisches (sp?) involve a lot of socializing because it is such a solitary career. There are plenty of organized seminars on offer.
Though no one has yet presented a proper agenda, or suggestions of other locations that might be quieter, we could certainly discuss prices and self-marketing and future meetups.
(I don't feel up to getting infront of 25 people and hosting a panel discussion, but certainly wouldn't mind if someone wanted to!! )
After speaking to people at the stammtisch and privately, I think most people would be shocked at the price ranges offered. Another topic that might be of interest to many people could be the use of CMS systems (CATs) in translation - why, which ones, cost / use and ROI. ... Darn it, now I've started and I actually have work to do today...
Kay
I have nothing against socialising, on the contrary. I am not suggesting a panel discussion complete with
keynote speakers, PowerPoint presentations and what not, either. All I'm saying is that last time the music
was so loud that some of us couldn't hear ourselves think.
DDBug
gotcha - will definately mention that to him. (Though I was hoping someone would volunteer to chair a discussion wink.gif )
Kay
We actually asked at least half a dozen times (conservative estimate) for it to be turned down
but I guess we lacked the necessary authority - that's where you come in! wink.gif
DDBug
Actually, the table closer to the bar (across from the bar) is probably the quietest one on the place, for some weird reason, except for the second "niche" area. depending on how many we are, we can adjust as needed.
crusoe
I will be there, a friend of mine will be down later (as yet a non-TTer but am working on her. After all, what's not to like... smile.gif )
Johnny_who?
so how big is the group gonna be this time?
Tiggi
I'll be there.
Tara
I might pop along if I may. I work in publishing but it involves a fair bit of translation.
Small Town Boy
I will try to make this. I'm a freelance proofreader, but benefit financially from the logic highlighted in the quote given in the first post.
laura_k
I'm going
DDBug
Johnny_Who? Could you please warn Jürgen (I am in the office today and will probably forget) that at least 15 of us will be there, and to have extra salsa on hand?
Nicky
Don't forget me in your counting.
DDBug
uhm, johnny - it looks like 20 or so...
sea-king
21, I shall endeavour to be there, no I won`t I shall be there. blink.gif
laura_k
DDBug, is it listed on proz.com?
DDBug
Hi Laura - no, not that I know of. I think proz is more into PowWows. I would like to put it up again in the fall.
Contacting 4 different networking groups and 3 different emails, and various translator web pages is a bit time consuming - next time I will concentrate on the MUC-Trans group and mail list, so hopefully everyone who is interested in keeping up to date will sign up there (yahoo group) I will bring the infos tonight smile.gif
kim
I'll be there as well.
Tara
Sorry, won't be able to make it. No babysitter :-(
Tiggi
Something last minute has come up and I won't be able to get to this after all. Which is quite embarrassing really, since I was hyping it up last night... sorry!
Johnny_who?
@ tara
bring the kind along
crusoe
Nice to meet people last night - many thanks DDBug for organising the evening! Looking forward to meeting up again - Thai, Indian, beer garden or all of the above... whatever...
sea-king
Well I had a jolly nice time, got to tell all my old jokes to new people. Just sorry I had to leave a bit early, I am also sorry that my Burger was not too good and that I had to drink Bleifrei Beer Yeeuuccch!! blink.gif
multilingo
When is the next meeting?
Small Town Boy
Couldn't make the last one in the end, but would like to attend next time.
DDBug
Sometime around the middle of may. Probably around the 18th. Don't have time before that, unfortunately..
