Effects of sleep deprivation

I'm starting to hallucinate

OK, I'm very bored, sitting in Düsseldorf airport waiting to fly back home (ahh, isn't that sweet, I've started calling München home). And I haven't slept since I woke up at 7.30am yesterday (not for the right reasons though mad.gif ). That makes it 28 hrs with no sleep so far.

I'm screwed. Things are starting to swim in front of me and go funny colours (I'm not looking at a fish tank either).

My perephial vision has gone haywire too - keep imagining people coming up beside me, but no one's there. And my hearing seems to be really sensitive suddenly. Weird. blink.gif

Am planning not to sleep on the plane to see if it gets any worse, but was wondering if anyone else here had achieved around 36hrs of no sleep before, the effects, and if anyone thinks it might impact my ability to get on the lash tomorrow at the tt party?

Off to have a beer to see the effects. Helles first I think...

Did anyone give you some pretty paper to lick?

my record is 44hrs. straight with no sleep a few years ago, but I was kept occupied the whole time. Whenever I found myself sitting with nothing to focus on, that's when dizziness and loss of peripheral vision kicked in. When you finally make it there, your bed will never be so welcoming smile.gif

No Helles, so had a Franciskaner.

Feel wasted. keep catchin myself staring into space, then realise i have silly grin on as well. Constantly squinting too.

This could get amusing

Twice in the army went 4 days without sleep, both times started to have extremely realistic hallucinations on the 4th day eg a soldier with full kit and rifle patrolling past me about 2m above the ground, or driving a tank and suddenly seeing trees on the road in front of me or always having the feeling of seeing smoke out of the corner of my eye, all scary but somehow curious stuff. ohmy.gif
Since working in my present occupation have a couple of times done 3 day shifts (ie 3 days on the go with no breaks) but didn't have any unusual occurances (apart from being knackered)

Beer is not good when you haven't slept. Hops has a sopoforic effect. If it's not too late, try Gatorade or mineral water. And keep moving.
P.S. Does anyone work at the airport? A picture of a sleep depraved TTer staggering through arrivals while reeking of Weißbier would be a strong argument against globalization.

How dare you - i dont stagger!
Wibble
I would say that 25-30 hours without sleep is no problem whatsoever. The other week I hade been awake for 7 hours and then went on a 18 hour drinking session and had no problems with that whatsoever. Apart from the hangover when I woke up 3 hours later that is.

Only due to lack of sleep, honey! No one doubts your ability to carry your load. wink.gif
When I fly to California I generally make a 36 hour day and have been known to drive 50 miles after a 15 hour flight until I'm finally "home" (Ma's house), then it takes another few hours to wind down. No pink elephants or phantom soldiers, too much adrenalin for that.

Not safe and not something to be proud of. It is as or more dangerous than driving drunk. So I equate your post with someone saying that they drive after drinking ten beers.

That's nothing, I once had a dream where I was awake for six days straight. No hallucinations or anything.

The adrenalin keeps you going. Other people drink coffee to stay awake, I never even felt tired. Maybe one of our bio-scientists can explain.
brokenm
It doesn't matter how you feel. Drunk drivers usually think they are fit to drive as well. I have lost two people close to me because of people driving while no longer being alert only due to sleep deprivation. Whether you feel tired or not, you reflexes are diminished and it is not safe.

Driver sleepiness and risk of serious injury to car occupants: population based case control study.

Acute sleepiness in car drivers significantly increases the risk of a crash in which a car occupant is injured or killed. Reductions in road traffic injuries may be achieved if fewer people drive when they are sleepy or have been deprived of sleep or drive between 2 am and 5 am.

I promise not to drive sleepy, I never have.

el natural, unless you count the odd coffee or two, depite rumours from certain quarters soldiers dont get drugged up on a regular basis (apart from Ibuprufin, the army's cure-all).
