Hi, Nadia. No, I didn't grow up in Bloomington-Normal, just did my 4 years. Must say I didn't have a lot to do with the community at large while there - IWU is pretty insular.
Did you even know IWU was there? Lots of locals don't, I hear.

Don't know I went to school at a place that had Billikens as their mascot.

My husband was teaching at ISU so we met some IWU faculty. Erm...can't say much about the non-academic community at large, I found I was better off avoiding it as much as possible...

As far as mascots, I am currently finishing a degree at U of I. Our mascot is basically a white guy dressing up in war paint and doing some sort of "indian" dance. I'm pretty sure that takes the cake in terms of bad taste in mascots.

Nah, it's just that we can't compete with the british schools in terms of snob appeal.
(Anyway, I said snotty -- not elite. Elite schools get you good jobs upon graduation. Snotty schools make you think you ought to get a good job upon graduation. Frankly so far U of I is my favorite.)

wasn't it Reading that decided to do away with racist jokes in rag mags and replace all the Irish/Scottish/Welsh/Yank etc. jokes with Eric jokes?
This vastly increases the scope of your "unmentionable acts"...

Er... I'm old mate. They were doing sponsored flan flingin' for rag week when I was around. You paid 50p to them and a team of Phantom Flan Flingers would 'Hit' your nominee. The misery-guts of a landlord at The Dove got 'hit' 14 times in a single lunchtime. Ah! Such merriment in the days of olde.

yeah, that was originally the plan because I
do love the U of M and I thought a year away would make me a bit more okay with going to school within walking distance of my house, but the idea of staying in my hometown for uni still sounds pretty cringeworthy. Anyhow, Ames is a fun town, I'll just never venture to any other Iowan destinations:)
