From a very drunken discussion after the St Patrick's day parade, the topic of over rated bands came about, as it does with huge amounts of Guinness flowing, so name your top 5 bands that have been well over rated.
mine are
1 Rolling Stones (should have retired years ago)
2 Aerosmith (bunch of American tossers who wrote one song)
3 Cream (3 guys who argued all the time 30 years ago)
4 Spice Girls (yuck)
5 Back Street boys (male version of the Spice Girls)
I had to thinck hard about the 4th and 5th place as m&m and 50 cents and snoop dog being a close call

1. Bon Jovi: As one critic put it (wish I were so clever), "the world's most successful bar band".
2. The Beach Boys: A few good songs, but mostly shite
3. Madonna: Can't sing, can't act. Can dance a little.
I could name others, but it's hard to separate bands which simply suck versus those which are overrated. Those three have some critical and popular support.
Pearl Jam
Pavement
Any of those bands that call themselves "indie" as a marketing ploy (theres been a few of them coming out of the UK recently), and sound the same as any rock/pop band.
Live
Creed

fuck off, pavement is one of the best bands. Stephen Malkmus is a god. And to use a sentence that he uses indie as a marketing ploy, think again. As soon as Pavement became famous he changed, broke his band up. Only Jane's Addiction holds the same reverence for indie

I will classify all country and pop as shit (mainly because they don't write their own material-if you don't write it yourself you are just a coverband).

U2.
Apart from them, it's really too hard to narrow it down so I'll say if you get played on the radio you're probably overrated.

The Cure - miserable whining rubbish. So bad live that even self confessed Cure lovers had to wander off when we saw them.
Hendrix. Amazing guitarist but don't like his songs. Too much showing off how brilliant a guitarist he was. Sadly for me, this does not a good song make. Best song he ever did was All Along the Watchtower which was written by Dylan I believe.

HEATHENS
I agree with some of the choices. I can see why some people choose U2. However, the thing you have to remember about U2 is that they produce very listenable music which the average audience finds easy to go along with. This is the secret of their success. The Rolling Stones on the other hand should have disbanded 30 years ago with the departure of Mick Taylor. How can anybody say Cream? Obviously somebody who has never played any instrument in anger.
For what it's worth, here's mine:
1. Queen
2. Yes
3. Status Quo
4. Generation X (loved King Rocker - the rest was absolute tosh)
5. Culture Club

I don 't agree with that, many of the Country stars write their own music, many songwritters are now Top stars- like Phil Vasar, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Matraca Berg, just to name a few.
Shania Twain writes all her own stuff- her old stuff was good, but now she is trying to be pop.
My list-
Davie Bowie
Pearl Jam
Metallica
Tokio Hotel
Die Arzt
