happy st. patrick's day!!!
last night i was trying to explain St. Patrick's day to the girls (4 and 7) and they weren't grasping the concept- and the 7yo couldn't get past celebrating a holiday that wasn't German.

Never met an Irish person who gives a flying feck about St Patricks Day (funny, all the comments so far are from non-Irish-Irish). Not wishing to offend, mind. Least Guinness in the pub'll be fresher.

ach, the ones I know are looking forward to going out and getting pissed on guinness and getting free snogs from random girls
to my way of thinking they'd have been far better off without any of this christianity nonsense, as would we all, but there you go...
happy st. patrick's day anyway
don't drink too much

Today's my mum's birthday. This has meant I've always had a good excuse not to go out and "celebrate" St Paddy's Day, although now that I'm living in a different country, I've had to come up with different excuses.
Ran out of excuses last year though. It was actually OK.

You didn't see the thousands all along
Leopoldstraße and gathered on
Odeonsplatz last Sunday?
Biggest Celebration on Mainland Europe, that was.!
Beats the way you lot celebrate St. George anyway.
Keep your cave warm and don't go outside.
You might get involved in the real world.

The word ending is pronounced longer so it gets the fada, although I'm not sure about the 'i' as I thought that would make it plural.
And for a little more Irish, the first verse of the national anthem. An anthem which we are proud to say ranks as one of the most boring around. I give you, The Solider's Song...
Sinne Fianna Fáil
A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn,
Buion dár slua
Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn,
Fé mhóid bheith saor.
Sean tír ár sinsir feasta
Ní fhagfar faoin tiorán ná faoin tráil
Anocht a théam sa bhearna baoil,
Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil
Le gunna screach faoi lámhach na bpiléar
Seo libh canaidh Amhrán na bhFiann.

Allow me to clarify. The term "Saint Patrick's Day", to many Irish people I've spoken to (my mother's mother was from Galway, I had a Dubliner girlfriend for 3 years etc. etc.), has become simply a tag for a day when people get trolleyed and celebrate everything that has come to be associated with the Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck.
Most Irish people I've met don't give a flying feck about the intended meaning of St. Patrick's Day: a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

Might I just clarify a few things?
You chaps are all celebrating in honour of Maewyn Succat
whereas I do so in honour of Palladius.
The Americans do the honours for St. Patrick.
Is everyone now clear on the issue?
Good!
