Playstation 3 launch delayed by 6 months. Instead of going on sale in the spring they won't be available until November.
I wrote one of my MBA dissertations on the console wars, it's fascinating stuff... It's not just a battle for market share, it's a tussle to establish the standard technology (as the Guardian article says, similar to the VHS vs Betamax war).
Does anyone think that this delay will kill Sony's market share too much?
If Sony really do manage to release in November then they might just save their skin. But if they miss that date and miss the Christmas market (80% of the annual sales for consoles) then surely they may as well just give it up?

What both the 360 and PS3 need is the "must have" game that exploits the platform to the full. At the moment the games industry seems to be going through one of its least creative phases, just look at how many can be summed up as "same as before but with cooler graphics".
If the 360 can get an exclusive game that takes off like GTA3 it could exploit the delay. I suspect most PS2 owners would rather wait the 6 months than swap platforms.

The delay leads to the 360 getting a more stable market share that will effect them in the generations to come.

I still think Sony will dominate. One of the pluses for the PS2 at its release was that it could play the older games which kept buyers interested in its product(at least States wise) line. I think this loyalty(and a strong one it is) will pay huge dividends when PS 3 is released.

What Perdido said.
And I also think that there are more and better game developers behind the playstation platform resulting in better games and a much bigger selection.

To me the Xbox is a PC in a small box.
Playstation is a console. As I already have a PC I won't buy the Xbox I'll wait for the PS3.
Plus Sony always seem to have more inventive ideas such as Eye Toy, Buzz, Gametrak etc.

The XBox 360 hasnt really wowed anyone so far. Its been dogged by bugs since its launch with several people reporting their machines to crash, also its said that to truly appreciate the graphics ability of the 360, you need a HDTV?
PS3 is what I am waiting for and specifically Resident Evil 5, even though it will be released on both platforms.
Will be interesting to see what Nintendo do? I always felt the GameCube was hugely underrated. I mainly use mine as a doorstop now though, brushing the dust off occaisonally to play Resident Evil 4 and possibly Metroid Prime too.

Thats exactly what nobody seems to be bloody thinking about. Its all about establishign the PS3/360 as the "must have"
entertainment unit, doing all manner of multimedia gubbins and wotnot.
PS3 will apparently run a linux OS, so will effectively also serve as a PC for some stuff, and will use a 60GB hard drive, which may not be included in the price. Its been almost guaranteed to be available worldwide before thanksgiving (no fucking idea when thanksgiving is personally, but its autumnysortoftime I know)
Theres been some palava, but it seems it will use the blueray disks (50GB jobbies that are apparently harder to copy and shit)
I reckon it might well have the Sony Location Free player technology built into it. They whacked the player software in the PSP, so it makes sense. Oh, the PSP will soon have video and voice over IP software on it, and an external camera.

Price for Playstation 3 has been setThe console will retail at around 400 Euros (for the lesser model) when it launches on November 11th. It is quite steap I must say but it is tempting nonetheless.

Sony also revealed the price of the console, which comes in two models. The system with a 20GB hard drive will cost $499 in the US, while a model with a 60GB will cost $599.
QUOTE
The system will come with a new controller. Sony has abandoned last year's boomerang-shaped prototype and reverted to a design similar to the current model for the PlayStation 2.
The Heavenly Sword demo was impressive
One key difference is the inclusion of a motion sensor in the wireless Bluetooth controller.
In a demonstration, a virtual duck was made to jump out of the water by moving the controller upwards.
Oooh... A controller with a tilt-style function. Now that does sound interesting. And they have reverted back to the traditional design. Excellent

The European prices have also been set at €499 and €599, which is not unexpected but a bit much since for the big model (the only one that has HDMI output which will make the Blu-ray actually useful) is now the equivalent of $750..

Now that they finally set the price, they've got to make the system work for November. Good luck! I wouldn't buy one of the boxes in the first few lots if I were you.

Saw some analysis that shows the components before assembly are $900 alone. So quite a bargain really!
Got the feeling I will go for an XBOX 360 rather than wait until Xmas.

Gonna be the same problem with the PS3 I'ld say...
Was bored two month ago (sick in bed...) and got myself a 360. Runs smooth since then, graphics on some games (you can download the demos for free) are impressive, nothing I've ever seen before(i.e. "Fight Night"). I connected the thingie with my PC and now can conveniently run music/photos/videos (no divx though

) from my sofa... and the controllers are much nicer to handle compared to the PS2 ones.

I don't know, first production run Sony products are sometimes rather iffy too. I remember there were a lot of problems with the PS2 and PSP in both Japan and the US.
Saying that, I've got a first generation PS2, which I've had for nearly 5 years now and I've had no real problems other than a few disc read issues.

I am the cheapest bastard in the world but around 400 Euro for such a divine piece of electronics doesn't seem bad at all really. People spend that much on their fucking hair appointments.

Yeah, but also think of the money you save if you go out and drink beer in the pub, rather than caning shitloads of weed at home whilst gaming. I like a nice cheap night out on the piss from time to time.

Lame, lame and lame. Stupid Sony.
I played an xbox 360 last week, and quite liked some of the features on it, but even playing on a huuuge wicked super snazzy TV, I was utterly utterly underwhelmed by the thing. I had a fiddle on a game called Tribunal, which I was really looking forward to seeing, and it was frankly quite a letdown. Not much improvement on Morrowind on my PC, and thats years old.
I'm bound to end up buying both consoles probably, because its always the case that some "must have" game will only be available on one console, but I'm starting to think its a bit of a waste of time. An Alienware PC is going to make games look miles more beautiful.

When you line up to purchase your PlayStation 3, make sure you hold onto your cash carefully and wear a bullet-proof vest.
"In Connecticut, two armed thugs who got wise to the PS3's high price and tried to rob a line of people waiting outside a Putnam Wal-Mart store at 3 a.m. One person who refused to give up the money was shot, state police said." More.

IT's been absolute chaos over here. Queues started forming a couple of days ago outside the Walmarts and Targets of this world. One Walmart in Southern California was actually closed down when people actually started a mini riot. Mad I tell you. Mad

It's getting more crazy in the United States. A
mob of about 600 rushed an Orlando mall for sixteen PS3 consoles. More police were called for backup and to escort shoppers to safety.

Sony must be loving all this.

Maybe a while ago. I was in Akihabara this morning and the PS3 was selling well but there were no queues/fistfights for it. I had a go on a demo one and I have to say, its pretty fucking amazing.
