Anybody know where I could rent or borrow a metal detector?
I skied off a ~10ft cliff this weekend at a pretty good rate of speed, when I landed both skis came off due to the heavy snow. I just kept going forward [in a nice rolling fashion mind you

] whilst my skis stayed back somewhere up the hill.
Anyhow, unbelievably after searching for 3 hours I wasn't able to find them, despite probing with my avalanche gear and digging several pits, only to find a rock at the end it!

Ski's have metal edges

Well I have metal bindings (Salomon S914). I'm assuming there is enough metal to get picked up by a detector

good luck finding them.

metal detector should work (friends and i were debating what to do when skis are lost in that snow and metal detector was the winner)

Spring melt?

Wait until it melts.
There's good money to be made to be the first one on the ski hill when the snow has melted. People lose all sorts of things especially if you look directly under the lift.

*sorry to try and be too witty, no help i am, hope you find them*

I'ld rather try a flame-thrower than a metal-detector... wait for the melt! Hard luck!

Spring melt?
He probably wants to be the first one to find them though since they're probably pretty nice skis if he's at the level of jumping off cliffs n shit (actually, I know they are really nice skis

)

Let me know if you don't find them. Oh, and where you were skiing

Top tip for the winter... what are you doing skiing in some big-ass off piste without those ribbon things on your bindings?
Ski comes off. Ski flies away (or in your case you fly away and the ski stays put)... ski sinks, ribbon floats. Voila... job's a good'n... 400 euro skis saved with 25 cent piece of ribbon.
Don't know where to get them. I'm more of the "gay-on-a-tray" rather than a "wank on planks" so I've never even looked for them but I know they exist... cos I've seen them work.

Powder straps ?

Ribbons? Straps? You guys sound German... :-P
Nah, all you needed was 920s instead of your 914s. Crank all the way down and then half a turn back and you'll never have to search for your skis again.
But seriously, not to demotivate or anything, but I've never met anyone who's found a lost ski, even after major search effort with probes and shovels. So being aware of your chances: your best bet is probably to round up a few people and move some serious amount of snow. But hurry up before the pow has gone hard or you get more on top!

@PTS - You are right, the only people I know who found their ski, did so in the spring. Nevertheless, if I had a metal detector I would have to give it a go. Principle of the matter...

And you may well find other peoples skiis too. Could be a nice little earner.

I once, just once, stopped to help a complete stranger search for her ski in the deep snow. In fact, all four of us stopped and helped her. After about 15 minutes of searching (and wasting a perfectly fantastic powder day), I said 'I'm outta here' and stuck my pole into the snow to push off. And, whaddya know, I stuck my pole right onto her ski. Lucky bitch, didn't even thank me.

another reason where the P's of marketing come in handy,
get Pissed off, Pee, Push off and you will find your skis

Letmeguess: she was German?
Had the same thing with German guy that yelled for help when he saw that I had a shovel. Stupidly, I stopped and helped him. Found if for him and he didn't even thank me! I just turned away into the powder and yelled Bitteschön.

Finding your skis in the powder is so much more difficult than you think it is if you haven't done it before.. in fact, I think I'll get some powder cords after reading this, because it has reminded me..
Last weekend was damn good though, the most fresh powder I've had all season - waist deep at times. Unfortunately it was the worst visibility of the season also.. ended up going home at 1pm..

Oh, and I forgot to mention in my story above, that this woman just sat in the snow while WE looked for her skis! She didn't even help us!!

@Consequence: Don't tell me you lost your stormriders? Those are worth searching for. I can recomend the
DSV insurance if you don't already have it; they would have covered your loss and there would be no need for searching.
@Kitkat64: Was she _that_ good looking?
kitkat64
Mar 15 2006, 1:49 pm
Well, 1) I'm female so I wasn't checking her out and 2) no she was short and chubby. She was just sitting there on the side of hill (we weren't even 'off-piste' like she fell and was maybe hurt so we stopped.

@PTS - Yes it was a pair of my Stormriders (although the XLs, not the DPs) & I do have a the DSV Insurance - so in the end I'm OK. Just hate to lose something when I know exactly where it is! (well almost where it is

)
