Yeah, I heard about the massive increase in Maß prices too. It will be felt in the beergartens too.

Supposedly, the increase in price is because of a shortage of hops, due to the extremely hot summer last year and high intake of beer.

I feel this is a weak excuse, as no way will beer prices drop in 2005 even if 2004 produces a bumper crop of hops.

So €7 for a maß.

Still not bad, ok you gotta add at least €1 per tip per maß. Slighty more expensive than certain expat bars around munich, but certainly more atmosphere.

And how does the beer prices affect stuff? I was paying €6.80 last year, which was rounded up most of the time to €8. So the tips get smaller. If I was serving the tables, I would be complaining, but as a punter not.

€ 7 at the Wies'n is ok compared to some of the English speaking pubs in Munich but a LOT more than regular Munich pubs. Maybe I'm just tight but a fair tip of € 7 is € 7,50. Yes, the waitresses work hard but over 14% on every beer?

I saw the "Typical German" thing in the TZ on the train back from Passau last night and all the germans didn't get why I was smiling at it so much: LOOK IN THE FRIGGIN MIRROR YOU NIEDERBAYERN TRASH!

Even @10 teuros a pop, it would be tough to drink your way through 50 dabs..

Remarkably good value for money, I certainly spend that much at the local bars in a night.

Keydeck
Whether you're kidding or not Grinner I'd agree that even at the seemingly ridiculous price of €10 it would still be worth it. Most people will only drink a couple at most and the atmosphere completely makes it worth the cost. Anywhere else you'd most likely be paying admission to the tents in the first place. Roll on the Wiesn. I'm well up for it!!!

As for the dodgey looking German, I think that's bollocks as most germans that I see put the rest of us to shame in the physique department. Ok the dress sense certainly has issues, but the Insul Affen crowd certainly beat the Germans hands down in the porker department. I'm clocking in around 98Kg or so myself, but I don't think I can manage a perm. Might be able to dig up a Hawaiian shirt though

just an idea..if it were up to me..you would pay 50 big ones on entry, for that you get say 5 mass of your drink of choice..a big chook and a jug of water (for in betweeners in vain attempt to keep you on the straight and narrow).
tips, service & moan to moody overworked stressed waitress..maybe even a sly grope after 5th mass kicks in..obviously included in the 50 fee.

reckon this could catch on. bugger tradition.

roll on september. its gonna be huge.
Grinner
The problem is with 50 big one on entry, means that IF you get Chucked out of the Paulaner tent, after 3 big ones, (just for some minor scurmish with a pissed up Foreigner) then you would need to spend a further 50 dabs to get into another tent...

Just stick with 10 Euro a beer..

I don't understand this concept of paying for beer at the Wies'n.
People actually pay?
Anyway, Pat's im Tal is full of drindls and lederhosen so if you want a new one for the Wies'n now is probably a good time to shop (and you'll be able to test them out at the Frühlingsfest).

actually we got charged €6.80 a beer, but the waitresses only pay €6.40 or something like that. so even if you were being tight-assed, she'd still make a profit. i always obviously rounded up. bf talked to an experienced waitress last year and i remember seeing a report about those women a few years back. in those 3 weeks they can earn up to €5K or more i presume.

Even though the beer price is going up, people certainly shouldnt tip less, I always found that the people who were stingy on the tips were the ones left waiting longest to get served again.
Mind's Eye
IF you get Chucked out of the Paulaner tent, after 3 big ones, (just for some minor scurmish with a pissed up Foreigner) then you would need to spend a further 50 dabs to get into another tent...
So you get chucked out a lot for fighting? Do you try to hit a lot of tents in this fashion? Paying 50 Euros per tent to follow and *watch* the action might get a bit pricey...

the Insul Affen crowd certainly beat the Germans hands down in the porker department.
It's funny -- when I lived in England the kids I went to school with would tell me how fat and poorly-dressed all Americans were. The guy in the pic is the epitomy of what they swpre me the typical Americans looked like -- sans baseball cap and expensive camera.

Mmmmm 3 Lions, if you are OVERLY stingy with a tip then you can wait a fair bit but I don't think a waitress will expect a 14% tip on every beer, should they?

I reckon the trick on getting served quick is not to drink in a big round, cos a passing waitress will always have the one odd beer left over and make a quick sale.

Also to be friendly and helpfull at the beginning, passing her the empties and making a "bayerisch" type joke of whatever means that she'll more likely serve you quicker.

AA type people demanding a price of € 15 a mass!
And what a load of shite from the Trachenverband that only only the first Sunday is it a real "Volksfest" when that bunch of politically suspect hillbillies march through town.

1st Sunday is the best though cos the Braurösl is full of 15 000 gay blokes in tight leather trousers - guaranteed snog!
bubblylady
7€ for a mass i think is definitely too expensive, although i will still pay them
It is a "Volksfest" a festival for the ppl, but unfortunately it has got too pricey for most of the ppl and families. Imagine you have to take your wife and three kids for a full day on the Wies'n whilst earning only an average salary. You're broke then! PPl were complaining why there are more and more foreigners each year and it gets less and less traditional... this is because most of the families can't afford it anymore or if they can only for 1, maybe two days out.

And it is true, waitresses earn a fortune in these 16 days and it is far more then 5K. Maybe 5K only on tips but they still get paid by (I guess) the hour.
It also is true that waitresses pay less then the official price, so they definitely get the service charge already.
If you get vouchers (like from ur company) the voucher consists of two parts. One is the drink and the other one is the service charge.

Bubblylady, perhaps the people who moan about too many "foreigners" at the Wies'n would rather have their taxes increased to replace the millions that the visitors bring in for Munich City Council each year...

Quite a lot of people I know in Munich don't go becasue of the prices which while for the beer are just about tolerable, the food is outrageously expensive! I always go in in with some spicy little sausages and some Emmenthaler slices from the supermarket etc. A lot of people used to think I was just being scabby and tight but when they saw the price of a Käseplatte they were glad when I shared it all out.

But here is a family day with cheaper fiar rides for the kids and Monday to Friday a lunctime special hot dinner for € 8 or so which pensioners love.
