Why is he called Herr Indoors? Whats the gag behind that?
Katrina
Herr Indoors gets called Herr Indoors for several reasons. First off, the phrase has its' roots in the UK TV show Minder
where Arthur (George Cole) always refers to his wife as "'er indoors" (Her Indoors). I grew up near to where the series was filmed so can do the accent pretty well.
As I came to Germany as a single girl, I was on the lookout for a partner and so was on the search for a "Herr Indoors", so a German man to love and live with (yes I do like Lederhosen biggrin.gif ). This was in about July 1999 onwards and I have datalogs that far back (so have the copyright to the phase - I'm not joking, through prior usage through several other sites that I contribute to these rights have been established).
I met my Herr Indoors on 7th April 2000 over the last beer in the crate at a party and he became the specific Herr Indoors.
The nickname has stuck and it is quite good as it means that people know who is meant without me plastering his name all over the internet. Which is nice (MysteryMan that's for you).

PS I have lots of comfortable shoes. Even more uncomfortable ones though. wink.gif
PPS Koala I'll PM you after lunch.

Katrina, where in London is Minder supposed to have been set?
Katrina
East London/Essex, it was never named specifically but a lot of the scenes were filmed in East Hackney, Bow, Havering and Tower Hamlets (my dad worked for the GLC and then for ILEA so he could name the streets just by the look of the buildings, if a school or public building was in shot he could name the the lot).
I think that their lock-up was near Fenchurch St, at least between there and Limehouse, was always North of the river though. The end titles were filmed on Southend Pier.

PS I've now got the theme tune going around in my head "I could be so good for you, I'mgonnaloveya...la la la"

Katrina,

I loved Minder! I got the joke immediately! I as a man have an "Er indoors"! But we met over a failed computer installation...not interesting...in Ulan Batar the captial of the People's Republic of Mongolia...more interesting.
grtho
I always had Minder down as being in one of the dogier parts of West London, East Acton, Hammersmith etc but certainly never "Sarf of the River".

The bloke who played Arthur Fowler in 'stenders used to play the barman in the dodgy club they used to go boozing in.

Can't imagine getting a dodgy lock up round Fenchurch Street Station now, been yuppified into millionaires row for years... sad.gif
jeremy
Is that an earlier series?

Bill Treacher? Barman?

It was always Glyn Whatsisname who served at the Winchester I thought.

Remember Arfur and Terry singing their Christmas hit "What we gonna get for 'Er indoors?"

Hey BTW any way to download Fools and Horses off the Internet?
Katrina
Last time I was near Fenchurch St., I nearly didn't recognise it and I used to commute into that station every day. Absolute crazy money for property around there, even Isle of Dogs went posh years ago. Think that the nearest dodgy lock-up you'd get to there would be in East Tilbury frankly...
That's series 1 DVD box I think? I don't think that you could make the series now, that sort of life is gone and East London has changed so much since then through gentrification/immigration/city planning/social change/take your pick.
And the beer was an Augustiner Edelstoff.

Sorry, stand correccted, Bill Treacher had a walk on part as a regular in the club.
I reckon there's a fair big of dodgy gezzerishness still going on out Dagenham way mind, even if Shoreditch and the like is posh now.
Katrina
Reminds me when an estate agent tried to tell someone I knew that Dagenham was pronounced Daargenhaam...

Mates of mine used to live in Wansworth. I used to love staring up at Battersea Power Station and imagining the huge flying pig over it! (Anyone get that one?)

Moving scene in Fools and Horses when Uncle Albert wandered off one episode amd they found 'im staring up at the old docks. Great monologue from him about the old days of dockyards and ships when Britain was great...

Is the Prospect of Whitby still there?
