Does anyone have a good list of terms for hair styles, etc. auf Deutsch? I'm getting my haircut today and would like to know a few things like, layers, bangs, side part, trim, framing the face...

Would appreciate any help here...

Ich möchte eine Mullet, Bitte! smile.gif
mlh9r
No, I'm pretty sure Mullet doesn't translate... or perhaps it was the "keine" Mullet that they missed last time.
Kay
Wouldn't it be simpler (and safer?) to go to a hairdresser / barber who speaks some English? There are enough recommendations on TT for all styles, budgets and neighbourhoods.

Ask for a VoKuHiLa! wink.gif

Kurz, sehr kurz. Bentuzen Sie Nummer 9 bitte.

I guess in Germany people refer to haircut in mm's. You could say:

"Kurz.. Mit der Maschine.. 5 milimeter oder so.." (If that is what you want of course)

You can first name a number and if you think is long always make it shorter. Whereas the otherway around is obviously not that easy wink.gif

I have also heard people saying:

"Halbe weg!.." which means you wanna get rid of half the hairlength smile.gif

Good luck!

Probably easiest to just find a picture in a magazine and show it to her.

Maybe it wasn't clear from my original post, I need terms for a woman's hair cut.

When was the last time you heard a guy ask for layers or bangs? Geez.

I will consider it a very bad haircut if she brings the clippers out.
Topsy
bangs is "ein Pony"
dunno about layers, though

i'd just follow ER's advice and take a piccie of how you fancy having it done.

You haven't been in Germany long have you? German men spend three times longer in the morning primping themselves than German women.

layers: Schichten*

bangs: Franzen or Pony

side part: Seitenscheitel

trim: Schnitt/schneiden

framing the face: das Gesicht umrahmen

* there may be a more appropriate term for layers for hair but they'll get the point.

Ein "Lionel-Blair-Schnitt" bitte.

Thank you!

or ein Thomas Gottschalk schnitt.

Maybe for a few layers you say 'ein bischen stuffig' or something (excuse the spelling)? (Vaguely recall the hairdresser asking me if I wanted layers that way the last time I had a haircut).
natasa
layers: Stufenschnitt
or just go to IGOR, Hairdrasser (Salon Genzinger, Balanstraße 95)

that's what I don't like sometimes about this forum.. getting heat from people about such stuff, who can't be bothered to type their gender (in their profile) at the first place.. mad.gif

a "thanks, I appriciate the help folks! but I guess it was not clear from my original post, I need terms for a woman's hair cut... " would have been nice..

Geez.. dry.gif
natasa
layers = stufen
bangs = pony
side part = Seitenscheitel
framing the face = gesichtsumarmend
trim = schneiden

Now where was that "Thank you" thread from a couple of weeks ago? biggrin.gif

Relax Bora, she was making a joke.

thanx for the head's up ER! some quality sense of humour here.. needed some time for that one to sink in laugh.gif

anyways, nevermind.. I am relaxed as I can be on a Friday afternoon an hour or two before "Feierabend"! cool.gif

so, no worries! wink.gif

...mind u - perhaps you might like to state what a bang is... for some of us 'blokes' it might have a very subtle alternative meaning...

;-)

@mjdavey
Nothing risqué: it's a fringe! biggrin.gif

Edit: Here we go again... another reply that appears before the question!

just to add on what a few people have said. when asking for your hair to be layoured you can ask for a "Stufenschnitt".

or treppenschnitt
Dame Edna
I put this list together the first time I planned to go to the hairdresser in Germany - it helped to learn in context (and no I didn't get everything done on the list...)

lockig = curly
volumen = body in hair
föhnen = blow dry hair
eine Dauerwelle = perm
das Haar hochstecken = to put hair up, pin up
der Scheitel = parting (e.g. mittelscheitel - parting in the middle)
die Pferdeschwanzfrisur= ponytail
der Zopf = plait or braid
Haarpflege = hair care
Die Haare nicht zu kurz schneiden = don't cut the hair too short

and to get a colour/tint = tonen (dye) and strähnen (not sure about spelling) for highlights/streaks
