Short tempers and frayed nerves

Has the long winter affected you?

OK then, partly inspired by another thread but also the point of discussion amongst myself and lots of friends / colleagues, has the long winter affected your overall mood ?

At work particularly and also in social settings it has become noticeable to me and others that people's patience and tolerance of others is starting to wear thin now and we all complain about Winter fatigue as being the biggest single factor in this.

Not sure if it's the cold but i don't think so, i think it's just the day to day grind of dealing with shitty conditions, stones in your flat and car, monotone colours everywhere in dress and landscape and general lack of sunlight on your face and back.

Does anybody else here feel affected by the Winter and does anybody have any remedies or pick me ups apart from the usual " let's go get pissed " remedy ?

which thread inspired it, then, bd?
spill the beans smile.gif

Piss off!

SAD thread with reference to Johnny English's light bulbs.
I have one on my desk and have yet to stab anyone in my office.
Because of my current health, I hope the snow and ice clears up as it makes it really difficult to get around (think it is bad with two functioning legs? Try with just one).

I am beginning to feel restless with all this snow. I have enjoyed it all winter long until this week.
And I do miss the sunshine a bit. Which is actually making me miss home.
I could go for a poolside backyard barbeque with some margaritas, my dogs, and reggae music right about...NOW!

oh great, this looks just like a thread where i can have a fooking good whinge.

so here goes - i am 1) long-term unemployed in a country where it appears that if your german isn't perfect to the nth degree, your fecked; 2) was rudely cast aside by my former company in a decidedly underhand manner by certain managers who were being plain fecking sneaky; 3) my lovely wife is now pregnant, so if i don't find a suitable fooking job we're both fecked; 4) i've ripped my knee to shreds, so can't enjoy the most wonderful skiing conditions in many years; 4a) i now have to have a nasty operation which will interfere with my job hunting; 5) have also decided to quit smoking and am in 3rd day hell.

so yes, i have a very short temper and extremely frayed nerves and it's frigging winter! wink.gif

EDIT: JE - i think i need about twifty hundrousand of your bulbs and lamps please.

The winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder is mostly due to lack of exposure to sunlight. Since we live in Munich where the sun never shines come summer or winter I doubt this problem is confined to winter.
When and if the sun ever does come out, make the most of it by going outside. Full spectrum light therapy boxes or lamps like the ones Johnny English sells (I believe) are effective to some degree.

Personally, I am normally pretty happy through the winter months. I like walking in cold or snowy weather, I don't even really mind rain that much, and low temperatures are not a bother to me. I actually get more pissed off and short tempered in the summer - when its hot, you sweat and its a pain to carry shit about. Woken up early at some shitty time, because the stupid birds fancy an early morning sing song, bitten by insects, wife keeps suggesting awful ideas like going for a long bike ride (fucking stupidity if its hot, and you are in Germany, where apparently the public transport is good), don't have enough pockets because you cannot wear enough clothes, sun in your eyes all the time, TV companies assume that you'll watch less telly, so the schedule becomes utter shite, the roads become absolutely full of fucking Dutch people with trailers going on holiday - lets face it, summer is a nightmare.
In the winter, my beer can keep cool enough in the cellar if I have limited fridge space. In the summer, you NEED at least 1 case in the fridge at all times, but summer is the time where women have a larger propensity to buy green stuff, and completely fuck up your fridge space with it.
Nope, summer winds me up more than winter.

top post by don - agree with almost every point (although I'm quite partial to the odd bike ride in the summer)

d_r, buy a fridge just for beer. mine will hold 4 crates, oh and a couple of bottles of fizzy water for the missus.

Actually, I have just remembered how Munich fills up with scantily-clad young eye-candy in the summer months. Doesn't seem so bad in that light.

Gonna be LOTS of september/october babies born this year.

Winter is almost my favourite season, I love it when it's really cold, I hate it when it's really hot, I could never retire to Spain, I'd melt. This winter has been fantastic, great skiing conditions, often in glorious sunshine and for the first time in ages a proper amout of snowfall in and around the Munich area. Just driving from Allershausen to Freising was fantastic, the snow covered trees and fields were beautiful! smile.gif

try 7th spetember!

For me its not the weather- its not cold at all (being Canadian and used to much colder and longer winters), its the fact that there are just too many idiots out there! To many -ve people!
Have seen too many German's driving around with a foot of snow on their cars, not clearing the windows, people getting ruder on the ubahns and buses, Grocery store clerks crabby and most of the customers too. It all adds up to help make everyone elses mood miserable.
I become aggressive when hit with aggressivness. And there has been alot of that around lately. dry.gif

Heh heh heh heh heh! Not me. I love seeing people pissed off going about their daily grind of ubahn and tenglemanns. Makes me feel alot happier. I think grocery stores are on the whole relatively pathetic in Germany, and they piss me off all year round, so its great to see somebody grumpier than me, even for only a few snow filled months.
Topsy
I've not noticed anybody being rude to me (well, with a few notable exceptions).
I'm finding everybody nice and jolly and friendly on the whole.
I fell flat on my arse the other day and this nice man came rushing to help me, the assistant in Tengelmann yesterday went out of her way to be friendly to me, I could go on and on.
I don't really get what this thread is about, really. I've not noticed anything of the sort.

Although you've yet to spill the beans, bd, on which thread inspired it tongue.gif

I love the winter here and can't get enough of it (like the summer too - I guess I just like being here in Munich)

I noticed that I was all the time depressed and out of sorts in Germany. I definitely suffered from the Seasonal Affective Disorder in the winter. I am not particularly fond of cold weather. I much more prefer going to the beach, barbeques, beer gardens and biking to winter activities. That combined with the language and Culture differences and I just decided it was time to move on. Though I do miss some aspects of Germany, I am much happier here in sunny and warm Miami where today's temperature is currently 75 degrees fahrenheit ( 23 degrees celsius for you european types. tongue.gif )
