I'd like to have a camera lens temporarily as I don't have the funds to buy one right now and am going for a weekend somewhere picturesque.

I've never heard of this, but if anyone knows, Sauter will.

Hmm in the states it is common but have never tried it here. It might help if you post what you are shooting with. EOS system? I know in the states Canon makes big time bucks using outlets like ProPhoto rent out this series, and what a wonderful series it was...

Depends on the camera and the lens that you might want, I think the place in Sendlingertor does it, but it is only for Nikon and not cheap

I recently asked a german friend about this very topic. He said not really done in Germany. He suggested buying a lens second hand on eBay, which you can then sell when you don't need it anymore. Seems lenses don't lose their value very quickly, so all-in-all it shouldn't cost you too much - you might even make a profit!!

if u try a media rental company like Videolink in munich they might be able to help you...

Here is my photo store in Munich and they are U.S. based so they might do it. It about 200 meters from the Hapt BH station.
Calumet photo. The customer service is good although the manager has a dry and I mean very dry sense of humor.

Saut(eu)er might do it and Dinkel (pros only) will if they know you and you have an account with them. What camera do you have and what lenses are you looking for?

I never got an account with Dinkels but man I wanted to. Everything is much cheaper with the buisness discount.
There's a pro rent place on Landwehrstr, just off Sonnenstr. on the right hand side. They do everything. Lenses, cameras, lights, etc. All yer top Sinar P 10x8's, yer Bladders, yer Broncolor's and yer Bowen's.
Bloody expensive mind.

Isnt that Dinkels?
BadDoggie
Mar 8 2006, 5:19 pm
Yes. And they're only open Mon-Fri from 9-5 because they don't want amateurs and hobbyists. They're expensive because they only carry expensive kit; they're cheaper than Saut(eu)er. I got most of my gear from them.

So long as he keeps his lenses like his sense of humor, I have no problem
I need the Canon EFS 17-85.

Agreed. I never got around to bringing in the paper work for the account , but I have looked around to see what they offered. They probably have the best to offer in terms of the Munich area, and the Regensburg area offers sh*t(but you know that). I just got lazy and bought on-line with Calumet(hey delivery is nice).

Well you have to have a business license to buy there so try Calumet.

Actually, you don't have to have a business license at Dinkel unless you want an account there. However, if you start asking lots of amateur questions you will be asked to leave. Go in, ask if they have what you want, put yourself on the waiting list if they don't have it, wait for the call.
The 17-85 is about the most common EOS digital lens out there -- it's my workhorse. For only a few hundred more you can get a stabilised 75-200.

I have the a 20D as well. When it's time for buying, do you recommend the 75-200?
Hi
Isarfoto rents out lenses.
http://www.isarfoto.com/EN/index.phpAs far as I know, they have all shapes and sizes of Canon and Nikon lenses...

Also have the EFS 17-85 IS mated with my 350D and it's the best. IS is amazing and you'll never go back to a lens without it once you've used it. Also have the cheapo 75-300 which is excellent value for money for such a long lens. Just eyeing up the 30D now

I use the 28-85 on my 350d, if that will help you give me a PM and you can borrow that for the weekend,,,,,provided that you leave me a suitable deposit...

I guess the 30D wil have a 30 image buffer for continuous shoot. Some sources say it's 10.2 MP, some 8.5. Priced around 1300. What does your intelligence say about the 30D?

Oops. Typo. I have the 70-300, not a 70-200. I highly recommend it and if you want to see a couple long shots I did with it, see
here,
here,
here, and maybe
here as well. These are raw JPGs -- they haven't been tweaked or corrected in any way because the radio station wanted the New Year's Eve shots up on New Year's Day.
All band photos in that section are mine, all people photos are fom a couple other guys. How soon do you think it'll be time for buying? My almost-new
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM AF (~US$700) is going up for sale because I need better for concert work: either the 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM (US$2500) or the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (US$1150). The 28-300 would probably become my workhorse but that f/2.8 is awfully tempting.

Yeh dpreview says €1400. If you're from the UK, pixmania have it advertised for £913. Personally, I'm going to wait until I go to Japan, as I see yodobashi camera has it for 158000 yen on their website (€1120 , £770). Or maybe I'll ask the gf to find it in the states somewhere when she goes back.

Sure that's with VAT? I'd be concerned with any place selling Canon kit very cheaply. And do those Yodobashi prices include the 15% or do they point out that there's also a 15% tax for locals? The price for the 28-300mm is around the same as it is here and the price of a 5D is considerably higher than here. There just aren't that many changes to the 30D that would push me to sell my 20D and get it.
If I hit the lottery, though, I'll be the proud owner of a 1DSmk2 and a
Hasselblad CFH39.

yes, the pixmania price includes UK VAT, I've ordered from them before and haven't had any problems.
linkAs for yodobashi, not sure about the 15% tax on the website, but I got a huge discount on a lens there just before xmas (£340 instead of £500 in UK). The total price I paid was the price advertised, so I assume this includes the 15% tax already.
Anyway, I'll save the thorough investigations until it's actually out and in stock! If I already had the 20D I don't think I'd bother changing either. I have a gf who is pestering me to buy the 30D so she can "have" my 300D.. Hmmm, will have to work out payment terms

If you're back there, see what kind of a deal you can get for a 5D and a 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM -- If they'll do ¥500,000 or less it's a deal.
That would become my primary unit and the 20D would be used mainly with the 10-22mm for wide angle and I won't have to keep swapping lenses during a show as other photorats bump into me and audience ijits keep throwing water and leaking various bodily fluids.
No Japanese tax should apply for items bought for export -- they may do that TaxRefund crap where you get a slip of paper and receipt, then you have to show the goods at the airport, get a customs official stamp and then get the money back.
