Although the exact details of the visit are still being discussed, Pope Benedikt XVI is planning to visit Bavaria 9-14 September.

Highlight of the trip: three Masses in Bavaria, the largest of which (for ca. 280,000 worshippers) will be in Munich. Regensburg and Altötting will host the other two.

School holidays in Bavaria have been extended by a day (to include 12 September). Not sure why that is, or whether I agree, but what do I know. dry.gif

The Holy Father has decided not to hang around for the Oktoberfest which starts on 16 September.

More on this here: Papst in München - Merkur Online (in German)

He is due to arrive in Regensburg. The town is so excited they decided to uncover one of the Domes!
Daisy
He should have planned it for after Oktoberfest... so that everyone has the opportunity to get a clean slate.
kalidas
What's the favorite beer of the Pope?
perdido
Like any good catholic, anything that is free. Me being a recovering catholic. biggrin.gif
MrRee
If the pope has a beer of choice, it's Malteser Weißbier from Stuttgarter Hofbräu.

PES
Is that Malteser Weißbier? cool.gif

Is that a typo or is that really "Dome"?
How do you uncover a dome?
sarabyrd
I think he means the cathedral towers which are almost always covered in scaffolding. This is what it looked like when we were there last May.

MunichMom
I just heard to the radio today that school kids (in all of Bavaria?) will get an extra day of summer vacation this year because of the Pope's visit.

The mass in Regensburg will be in a field next to the Autobahn A3 which will be closed for the duration, and the ADAC (German Automobil Club) is in a hissy fit about it, saying that all the through traffic will be winding its way through Regensburg's old city. As if there weren't enough time to replan a route between now and September.
The mass in Munich is planned for the New Exhibition Grounds in Riem.

According to the local rag, the Pope will visit Freising on 14 September. He has long connections with the town, starting in 1945 when be began studying philosophy on the Domberg, later become a professor at the Phil.-Theol. Hochschule. The Pope's coat of arms contains two symbols relating to Freising; the Freisinger Mohr on the left, and the bear of Korbinian, first Bishop of Freising (AD 720) on the right. The latter symbol is the town's emblem.

Sensation: Papst Benedikt kommt doch nach Freising!

oooh, if our baby is born then, i'll see if we can get a blessing (not that we're catholic or anything, but y'know!) wink.gif

From today, tickets for the September Masses are available from local parishes (both local and international Dioceses) - more information at Diocese of Munich.

If you do not know which parish you live in, you can find out using the Parish Search Engine.

Remaining tickets should be available on general release after 15th May.
perdido
Hey they uncovered the second steeple the other day. Its been a party ever since here in Regensburg...toilet paper or not.
pike
Free tickets for the Gottesdienst on 10th September at Neue Messe have been available to those who are not local parish members since yesterday - go to Erzbistum München if you're interested. I believe 200,000 have already applied rolleyes.gif

And you can apply online via the above link. No I'm not actually Catholic (I'm neither christened nor baptised). The picklists only ask you to give a "(Erz)Bistum" which can be "außerhalb Deutschland" so if you are a baptised Catholic who is not currently registered for the German Catholic Church but would still like to attend, you can still apply (you might get some post about registering though).

Read the title of this thread "The Pope is coming home" and now I can't get that bloody Lightening Seeds song out of my head.

The pope is coming home,
He's coming,
The pope is coming home,
He's coming.

One cross on his hat,
Christian types revere him,
Saving all your souls,
Now you can be near him.

You'll probably get a visit from these guys:

Freising is of course older than Munich and was the seat of a bishopric when München was just a marshy bog.
Indeed, the diocese is called "Freising und München".

Bear in mind, whether by car or by ÖPNV, traffic anywhere in Bavaria is gonna be MENTAL when Pope Ratbag is around.
almostgerman
why isn't he coming to munich?
we can cover up our church just as well.

i didn't know popes were so easily offended...

While you're photoshopping, ag, maybe you could put a couple of condoms on them instead? More suitable for a visit from the Pope, no?
Yeti
I'm not sure if the Pope is in favour of double-enders though.

That's a local issue for local people!

I'm off drinking with a mate from Altötting later, I'll ask him to make something up! laugh.gif

Though of course everyone knows already Pope Ratbag placed his hand on my ex's head a while back...

Was he a cardinal at the time, they like purple ?

Pope to visit Bavarian cities where he taught, studied, served

By Carol Glatz
Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- When Pope Benedict XVI visits Germany this September, he will make stops in his hometown of Marktl am Inn, a nearby town that houses a Marian shrine, and cities where he studied for the priesthood, taught theology and served as archbishop.

On July 12 the Vatican released a general itinerary of the pope's Sept. 9-14 trip to Germany's Bavaria region, his fourth foreign trip as pope.

On Sept. 9 Pope Benedict will fly from Rome to Munich, where he will stay until Sept. 11. He served as archbishop of Munich and Freising, 1977-1981, before he was called to Rome by Pope John Paul II to be prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

More religious bollox! rolleyes.gif Some average old guy comes to town and hundreds of thousands if not Millions of Euros spent on security etc. The pure catholic religion that had no links to the Nazis or the Mafia or even now Dirty filthy Priests abusing children and being moved instead of being given to the Police has another day to celiberate.Religion is a joke that often causes war and more problems than if there was no Religion

If religion causes posts like that it certainly has a lot to answer for.

why isn't he coming to munich?

I think he is actually. There have been posters plastered inside the Frauenkirche about his visit for well over a month. I can't speak German, so maybe I'm misunderstanding why they are there.

Btw, here's a factoid from TT's second tour guide in residence (#1=nofxmike): The current Pope was Archbishop of Munich and Freising from 1977 to 1982. He held mass at the Frauenkirche. It would make sense for him to stop by to at least say hello or something.

I applied.
I have Pope tickets.
This non-baptised, non-Catholic heathen has Pope Sunday Mass @ Riem tickets.
Seriously, they arrived yesterday, 2 tickets to the Pope.
Means I may now sin until September and then it is all righty? Probably no, I'd have to pay sign up then.

A certain Catlick of my accquaintance said that at least he saw the Boss back when he was good. Unfortunately two audiences did not have the required effect.
Yeti
Stranger than a strange thing, Ted.

Back when JP II was rocking in the free of sex world (the eighties) was the time to see the Big P live.

Anyway I hope you enjoy it but watch out for the crowdsurfing, the number of crozier related injuries is insane.
planetmoni
i picked that up today smile.gif

Wibble
I understand why the schoool holiday's have been extended for this one. As the world's leading paedophile organisation the catholic church obviously wants as many kids to attend as possible.
MonksTown
You can take Pope Ratte out of Niederbayern but...

I heard on the radio last week that during the pope's visit to Munich on Saturday, September 9th, S-Bahns and U-Bahns will not stop at Marienplatz, but will drive straight through. There was also some mention of downtown shops shutting at midday.

I tried to find a bit more info, and discovered a special website set up for the visit, which includes a preliminary programme in English, if anyone's interested. The pope will be touring through downtown Munich in his popemobile from 5 p.m., ending up at Marienplatz at 5.30 p.m., hence the increased security.

Between Sept 9th and 11th there will be a number of traffic restrictions:
  • The police website lists roads where cars will not be allowed to park.
  • You won’t be able to leave your bikes in the area between Universitaet and Marienplatz. People are requested to remove their bikes from the area shown in the map by September 3rd. Any bikes left there will be removed on September 4th: Map & Info (in German).
