Just some fyi for any of you who wish to find weissbier in Britain: I was at the local Morrison's yesterday (in Woking) and they had individual bottles of Löwenbräu, Franziskaner, Paulaner, and Schneider Weiss for sale- in regular german labeled bottles! Of course, they were 1.49 pounds a piece (ouch!) but at least they were available! I have been sooo craving a good weissbier since moving from Munich!

That's good news. Safeways were famous for their great selection of bottled beers, but this went dramatically downhill when Morrison's took them over. Looks like it's getting better again...
1.49 is an average price for a bottle of beer in the UK. Considering the import costs, it's not bad value. But yeah, they cost 45p each over here

I don't know about 1.49 as being the average price.. I used to get 8 cans for a fiver! And that was only a year or so ago..
1.49 for a weissbier in the UK doesn't sound too bad to me though.. last time I was only there for a week and couldn't stomach Stella, Grolsch or Kronenburg for very long so ended up paying 4 quid for a Paulaner weiss!

Well, you get what you pay for. Like I said, £1.49 for a *bottle* of *beer* is an average price.
No good beer is to be found in cans.

The bottles were the usual .5L that they sell in Germany, too. So I guess you get a bit more beer than the usual 12 oz bottles...

i went on a great stag party in oxford 3 weeks ago. as i now refuse to drink 'lager' in britain, i had great fun going around trying lots of local, or not so local specialist brews. what i do miss here is the freehouse concept. i had great ales from scotland, dorset, devon, kent, asdfaDS, sdhfhabvnbshire and hic!! didn't find OP though but got a couple of great winter warmers in.
as don says, the cooking lager here is just so much superior to that in the uk. and when you have to drink cooking lager here more often than in the uk due to very few freehouses, then it is considerably better. however, as there are plenty of freehouses in the uk, you can try a great variety of good ales.
different country, different situation. both with pros and cons.

Wow, someone's brought this back on-topic after three pages of talking about beer. Personally, I find beer more interesting than relative GDP levels, but that's just me.

When in Karlsruhe, drink Hoepfner Pilsner - Himmlisch herb.
