Exchanging an MVV travel card for another type

I bought my MVV green card for this month, and usually that's fine. But this month I am taking german lessons in the morning and have to take the train at 8am. Like a dope, I totally forgot about this fact whenever I bought my card until I had to take it this morning. Is it possible to exchange it and get the regular Isar card? Or does anyone have any other creative ideas? It is only two stops, so I could walk it but would rather not. Or do I just have to bite the bullet and get another pass for this month?

If it's only 2 stops, buy a Streifenkarte. You only have to stamp one stripe for 2 stops.

How often do you have to travel before 9:00?

I am not sure that's a good solution. Each stamp would cost him 1Euro and in the end it will add up to the difference. Plus you can only go one direction with those damned Streifenkarte things, you have to stamp again on the way back.

You can always go to a counter and ask nicely smile.gif You might need some German though..

Friend did this in Jan. You can exchange the card for a card of equal or greater value. So if you just got the innenraum green card you can pay a few euros more to get the first 3 rings. You can not exchange it for a card of lesser value even if you say that you don't want the money back just the other card. No other way around it. I am positive that this info is correct. But it will be cheaper than using the steifen card.

it might be a good suggestion, actually. I assume the return journey would be at a time when the Green card is valid (those are the ones valid after 9am aren't they?).

As ER asked, how many times a week will you be travelling at 8am? If it is only a couple, then buying a Streifenkarte might be more economical than changing to an Isar card.

Assuming his German lesson is more than an hour+ he won't have to pay for the return trip as he can use the Green Card after 9:00.

It also depends on how many rings he needs for normal travel. If he normally travels 4 rings (Isar Card €53,50) and has 10 or less German classes this month, then it would be wisest to keep the green card and buy Streifenkarte (assuming the green card is still €42,00?).

EDIT: What OG said.

I would be travelling 5 days a week, so I will get the Isar card. Thanks everyone for your replies, I didn't know I could do this. I only need the 2 ring IsarCard, which I think is around 40 euros or something like that.
knusper_muesli
Well, that doesn't really make any sense.

The Grüne Karte costs €42, but the 2-ring Isarkarte costs €37. If you only need the 2-ring card, why do you normally buy the Grüne Karte? You're paying more than you need to.

As mentioned by the others. you cannot exchange your Grüne Karte for a 2-ring card, cause it costs less. However, you could theoretically exchange your Grüne Karte for a 3-ring card this month, since it costs €45.

I bought the wrong ticket once too - needed a week ticket but forgot, and got my usual month one. I went that day to the MVV counter at Marienplatz to explain, and they gave me a refund (only charged a couple of euros administration fee) so off I trotted to buy a new one.
Winegirl
@UA, wow you found the elusive generous MVV worker in a good mood!
UrbanAngel
Umm no, that's standard procedure! Of course, they're less likely to change a ticket if you've used it for a few days already, but mine I'd just bought.
Winegirl
Not according to the 2 counters we bought it from. The other person is fluent in German. We bought it looked at it and went directly to the counter realizing the error. When they said no we went to Mplatz where they told us the same.

it seems this month is an exception. maybe the MVV people will be nice and exchange the ticket for you. you might have to sit on your €5 though.

if, as winegirl says, they are not understanding & make you buy a IsarCard too, then maybe you can sell your "green tix" on TT to recover some of the costs.
UrbanAngel
@Wine Girl - sorry to hear that!
