Hammering the beer gardens

3 or 4 times a week this summer - who's up for it?

the Boy From Bozlem
Ok so looking out of the window this seems a bit premature but im leaving Munich in September sad.gif and I have decided that before I leave I want to go to every beer garden in Munich or as many as humanly possible.

So what I intend to do (once the weather gets better and the damd things open up again) is three or four times a week to head off straight from work and visit two or maybe three beer gardens and neck a beer.

I wanted to know if anyone has done this before and if anyone is up for the challenge?

PS: if anyone would like to sponsor me then that would be great biggrin.gif

Sounds good, im always looking for some refreshment on the way home from work the 3 days per week i work in Munich. Beergardens are good cos people get there earlier and leave as it gets dark which suits cinderellas like me who have last trains to catch.

And spring is just around the corner too, probably be switching to shorts and jandals in the next couple of weeks.

how many do you reckon there are in Munich? Is there a definitive listing? I reckon your intense looking schedule would mean you can probably easily cover almost all of them (12 a week for say 5 months would give you 250ish). Hmm, I guess there could be quite a few small ones around though so maybe just aim for the reasonably sized ones
Jeeves
I had a good go at this a couple of years back when I had six weeks with nothing (better) to do. You should manage it quite easily if you stick to your schedule and it doesn't rain too much. And if you run out then there are plenty more within S-Bahn reach. Time to go look for a definitive list...

Perhaps if you took charge of the TT list then Ed Bob might give you a free subscription cool.gif

No idea on the number and as most Internet content is blocked at work its a bit of a ball ache for me to try and find out, I was hoping that some TTer may know.

250. mmm I may have to change this to beer gardens and Irish bars lol

Yea I was thinking maybe do the large ones on the days when most people can make it then leave the smaller ones for days when its just the hardcore maßive biggrin.gif

Well i was thinking of doing a report on each one. hint hint biggrin.gif
Kza
What you should do is have a thread for the TBFB beer garden series or something and every day post where todays beer garden is and people can come along. I wont go to every one, but someone will always be up to join you. I know quite often im looking for somewhere to drink after work and nothings happening. It would be quite good to know theres always going to be a tt beer garden event going on every day.
randy
Try the Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich for a starting list of beer gardens.
Jeeves
There is a booklet you can get (that's real paper and stuff) but I've only ever seen it on sale during the season anyway. Available at Hugendubel and all good beer gardens near you, but not now.

Cool nice one randy thats gonna be a good start, looks like its gonna be a fun summer. cool.gif

Once I get some sort of list together I will post it and then see if anyone can add to it. Once I start to get enough info I will try and sort some sort of map out so I can start planning project Drink Loads biggrin.gif

PS to the person who just PMd me, I cant send PMs from work. But the Answer to your question is yes and Im trying to sort it. biggrin.gif

laugh.gif Have you ever been drinking with TBFB? It would take much, much more than a little bad weather to keep him out of the beergardens.
Kza
Just make sure you wear a nice warm wooly pair of shorts and t-shirt, and a sturdy pair of jandals.

Does anyone else have "the beer drinker's guide to munich"? I think we should make an effort to hit every place in the book this summer, then, the Boy From Bozlem...no need to repeat ourselves. I can't guarantee I'll make all of them, since I work in the tourist industry...and summer is kinda crazy...but we can sure as hell try.
misscjnz
I'm keen to explore all the fine beer gardens in Munich biggrin.gif
I assume you'll be organizing this closer to the time.Do the beer gardens open in Spring or Summer?
bluedave
I may pop along to the odd garden to sample a radler or 2 wink.gif

Purely to be sociable you understand biggrin.gif

I would buy a copy but my CCard is so maxed out that i cant even afford 9 dollars on it. sad.gif

If someone wants to order one i will pay them the cash for it and buy them their first beer at the first venue of project Drink Loads
Kza
So when is the first one? Do we really have to wait till the beer gardens open?
the Boy From Bozlem
we can always head into the beer halls, nice and warm inside biggrin.gif

Well, you can, but they do close the food and beer stands if it looks like the rain is going to stick around and not just be a little shower.

The Beer Drinker's Guide has a short list of 9 "foul weather picks." You could always resort to those, which include the Weisses Braeuhaus and Haus der 111 Biere in Schwabing, neither of which I think qualify as beer gardens anyway.

There is no schedule, they open when the weather is deemed good enough which could be any time between the end of March and the start of May. Generally April some time.

14 Grün Tal
15 Sankt-Emmerams-Mühle

these two actually belong in "Münchner Osten", really, cos they are east of the river. Both are very good, though the service in the latter can leave a lot to be desired, especially in the summer. They do also have self service, though, but it is mainly with service. Grün Tal is a bit pricey but the setting couldn't be more relaxing and pretty.

Another one i can recommend is "Wirtshaus zur Dicke Sophie" right next to Johanneskirchen S-Bahn station. There is also a vey pleasant Beergarden out at Feringasee but this requries a bike ride (probably about 10-15 minutes ride from the Dicke Sophie so you can do both in one afternoon) or a fairly long stroll out to Feringasee from Unterföhring S-Bahn.

In fact, Grün Tal, Sankt-Emmeramms-Mühle, Dicke Sophie and Feringasee are all achievable on one sunday by bike.

4 Maß and then a bike ride home, Hmmm, I sure we had a thread about losing your driving license for being drunk on a pushbike before!
Owain Glyndwr
Allershausen, most of the ride is on footpaths, so you should be ok. You can ride from Grün Tal to Skt Emmeramm's Mühle via the Isar-Insel and from Dicke Sophie to Feringasee by a pathway through the countryside. The only road you have to navigate is from either Grün Tal or Skt-E-M to Dicke Sophie. If you finish at Feringsee most of the ride to the S-Bahn station is cross country, then you just S-bah it back to the city!

I have a map with all them all on and they are all numbered in close location to each other. So for example you could do 17, 18 and 19 or 1,2 and 3.

I will put the map up when i can sort the images out. Infact I will start another thread once the weather picks up and I will prob end up doing some sort of review too.

PS if anyone else has any more to add please post them with a rough sugestion of number where it should be included in the list.

If you want to do the weihenstephaner today, i can even act as a tour guide. smile.gif
iain
In fact with a quick dash through the three central beer gardens in this town, of which are not to far apart, you can even get all the freisinger kreis breweries out of the way. (with the ecxeption of the brauhaus which is terrible anyway!)
HellesAngel
And if you cycle out to Waldwirtschaft you can do Siebenbrunn and Menterschwaige on the way back - killer of a hill between those two though.

Spent Saturday sitting in the Aubinger Einkehr. Very nice indeed!!

don't forget the Schlosselgarten behind the Krankenhause Bogenhausen, and then the beergarten at TS Jahn sporthalle, then there are 2 more heading up to Daglfinger SBahn. Zamdorfer and the one close to the Sbahn- forget the name now.
iain
weihenstephanstuberl is at the end of the s1 in a town called freising. I saw it list in your beer garden list so I assumed you knew where it was. (it's the oldest brewery in the world) Very nice and scenic on top of a nice little hill, bit of interest historical drinking to be done.
the Boy From Bozlem
Oh so it is lol. I dont have my map on me at the moment so i couldnt look up where it was. Looks like i may be working a bit late tonight now anyway so Im prob going look for something close.

If there are a couple of watering holes out that way then i may wait untill a weekend, then i can spend the day getting drunk biggrin.gif

btw i cant send PM\'s
iain
ah but you can receive them yes?
the Boy From Bozlem
yup
iain
ok well one of these days we should arrange a weekend excursion to weihenstephanstuberl. There are some great waterholes and beer gardens hidden out here. smile.gif
