This weekend saw Munich's heaviest snowfall of the winter. In fact, it was the heaviest fall for a number of years. In some places up to 90cm fell during one 12 hour period. Parked cars were completely buried. On Saturday evening all of the MVV's above-ground public transport was shut down. S-Bahn problems continue. The kids at the Munich International School have Monday off because of transport difficulties. For lots more photos from around Munich...

The weather forecast is for light snow falls and sub-zero temperatures through Tuesday. From Wednesday temperatures will rise and it'll rain.

The posts below were made starting from Saturday evening as the heaviest snow began falling...

Will it ever stop snowing again or are we to prepare for the next ice age? sad.gif

As of 9.40 pm the MVV has terminated all surface trafic!!! This is NOT a joke!

See: Heavy snow causes MVV to shut down

Last night, Friday the 3rd, an emergency helicopter from Groshaden (sp?) had to land at Theresienwiese due to the bad weather conditions and was stuck there all day today as well because they weren't able to fly. I took my son down and had a chat with the pilot earlier on.

On a serious note, we have just had a close call when a branch about 3m/9'9" has just snapped off a tree in our back garden and fell a good 15m/50'. God knows how much it weighs but if anyone had been under it, or my precious Golf GTi, they would have been a gonner!!!

We heard a thump outside and thought my youngest had jumped out of the window after losing on the Playstation or something and almost soiled my smalls when I saw it!!!

The children wont be playing under any trees tomorrow.

Yeah the trees are weeping here too a bit. The cars are almost buried (OK, I lie) and you cant see the road or the tram tracks (prolly cos they have all been cancelled)...

real problem at the airport today actually. Many flights were cancelled and hapag loyd went off the end of the runway. I don't know if they did it on landing or take off, but they deffinately went off. leaving work myself and a friend heard the varig flight trying to start it's engines which was definately not happening. Mind you this was a seven or eight o'clock flight (schedualed for) that was just trying to take off.

Time for hot chocolate, cream of tomato soup and grill cheese sandwhiches.

OK, well it's about four hours too early for the soup and sandwhich, but the hot chocolate...yum

I live on Nymphenburgstr. the snow looks amazing on an ancient oak tree in front of my window.

Seems a rather selfish thing to do. I'm out clearing snow and helping neighbours...
Mrs Coulter
from in front of your computer? wink.gif

if anyone lives from within walking distance from or in Neuhausen and want to go out in the snow with our kids and play. Just PM me. A couple of us are getting together and walking to Schloss Nymphenburg.

That's the Hausmeister's job.

I can hardly see over the snow on my balcony to tell what it's like outside. I can measure the snow though: 17 inches in the last 24 hours.

Saw broken branches (big ones) on the sidwalk on the way home (at 3 am) and two trees in our backyard are looking very unstable. Mr DDBug gets to shovel today, I* shoveled 5 times yesterday and you can't tell.

*Ok, I sent the kids out to shovel three times and they did a pretty good job, but you still can't tell.
pootle
My sat dish isnt working, anyone know who I can call out?

Lupo
Got the call this morning...no work!!! Yehaw
DDBug
Waiting on the call for "No School" sad.gif
Kay
I hope it doesn't come to that because if the kids are at home I won't be able to work.

Maybe we should disconnect our phones? ph34r.gif
DDBug
You work from home as well, Kay? And I had an appointment tomorrow afternoon in Ebersberg ...

Can't find any information about the schools, but the first ones to close will probably be the Gymnasiums, since those kids have to travel farther. The grade schools will probably be open. Though our school has a flat roof, so I might keep them home anyway ...

laugh.gif

Dear sir..

Please can you excuse my little ones from school today, as you have a flat roof!!

Thank you..

Mrs DDBug

Not sure you will get away with that one! rolleyes.gif
DDBug
Grinner, of course I can keep them home if they have not cleared the roof.

Also because I know the history of the building and am concerned about the safety of falling snow (not necessarily that the roof will collapse a la ice rink).

You underestimate the power of a mother, Grinner.
Kay
@DDBug
My kids are at the Lycée français, which is literally a snowball's throw from our house. If I don't hear anything today I'll just walk (make that "wade") over there with them tomorrow morning and find out.

P.S. Yes, I work from home. We sort of met - "sort of" because we didn't actually talk to each other - at the translators' meet-up at the ed of January. smile.gif
Grinner
Humour is wasted on you Americans..
bookmanjb
Hey, I resent that. What could be funnier than a vice-president who shotguns a guy in the face and then the guy has a press conference to APOLOGIZE to the vice-president for putting his face in the way. Now that's funny... I don't think any European could come up wih something as amusing as that.

Some more pictures from my street.

@ Pootle - I've been out a hundred times and swept the snow off my dish to get my BBC! Is your dish too high? I got mine put down lower for this reason. Got fed up with no TV the first winter.

To show the depth in the courtyard compared to my leg:

Our snow is deeper (or my legs are shorter ...)
