As of 9.40 pm the MVV has terminated all surface trafic!!! This is NOT a joke!
A two-line sentence hidden on the Bayern 3 traffic news webpage confirms that the
MVV has suspended bus and tram lines. U-Bahns and S-Bahns appear to be operating as normal.

I've looked on the relevant websites and can't find anything. Any idea whether the
MVV U-Bahn (the above ground bit) and BOB are working?

It is 7:20am, and I have been up for an hour and haven't seen or heard a bus or tram running yet. The taxi drivers are out but they claim that the
S-Bahn isn't running. Your best bet to get somewhere in town right now is by taxi.
The
MVV site doesn't show any delays or give any announcements that I can find. Last night the news kept showing the traffic accidents of people coming back from holiday, and didn't mention that I could tell about the situation today.
The
Munich Airport only shows a few cancelations of European flights, with all the international flights still running.
Does anyone have a weather report of how much snow has fallen? To me it looks like about 2 feet has collected.

City trams and most buses are cancelled.
SBahn and
UBahn are still officially running, but in many cases and areas delayed as drivers have been advised to "drive with caution and no especial regard for the timetables".

In
Garching I can measure it - last cleared the snow last night about midnight (just by walking through it). This morning there is 10" of snow on top of my tracks...

Waited at the
SBahn station for 15min, only to be told that the entire
S-Bahn network has been shutdown as of 0700
Most Roads "out in the country", are also still snowed over with up to half a meter of snow, but they are working on it...

Sorry YL6 But as of 0700 the
S-Bahn network was shut down as well.
Good thing I found someone to give me a lift home.. Haven't seen an

Thanks, we'll see. His flight is at 10:00. The good news is that the incoming flight from ATL arrived this morning with only a 5 minute delay and that the international flights are still running. Let's just hope the roads aren't full of accidents at this time of day.

Showem and Greg have landed in Vienna, but their airline - in their no doubt infinite wisdom - is flying them up to Hamburg (

Hopefully the Hamburg-Munich flight will land OK...

Personally I am just amazed anything is running in this weather. Most other countries would have completely shutdown with this much snow (Britain being a typical example of this).

Walked down to the local
S-Bahn station at Geisenbrunn (S5) a few minutes ago. Everything is very quiet, tracks look as though nothing has been along for ages. Neighbour told me that the network will be down all day and mentioned electrical problems.
Roads also look pretty poor. The main roads are passable with care, but very few cars are out and so I don't think that weight of traffic will be enough to keep them clear. The local roads in our village have not been touched at all for over 24 hours, and you'd need a tractor to get anywhere! Add to that the number of tree branches that have collapsed under the weight of snow and the whole place is well snarled up.
Of course it is all rather attractive, and the kids have managed to get through 2 sets of dry clothes already, but any plans to go out have already been shelved

SBahn is stopped because of too many fallen trees.

I´m amazed that the S8 is still running between the aiport and
Ostbahnhof...maybe the city pooled all their resources into keeping this line open, since it´s Munich´s link to the outside world.

@mere: Yep, you've got it right. From first-hand experience I know:
-
SBahn between
Pasing and Ostbahnhof is running. Not sure how often.
- S8 to airport is running only from
Ostbahnhof. S1 is not running. All other SBahns are not running.
-
Hauptbahnhof is a big mess. Most DB trains are delayed anywhere between 30mins to 2hrs.
-
UBahn is running on sched
- Tram and Bus probably will be out the entire day. They just don't have enough snow removal equipment.
- Taxis are hard to come by.
All this and it's still snowing!!

Mar 5 2006, 11:41 am
They really, really hide it away, but this morning I did find the up-to-date travel info on the DB website. The link is below; just type in the station you want. Trains that are on time are marked 'Pünktlich'. Those that are late are marked 'ca. xx Minuten später', trains that are cancelled are marked 'Zug fällt aus'. The other 90% of services which are simply marked with a hyphen... well, I guess that just means they don't have a clue themselves.
Assume that the train is cancelled unless it specifically says so otherwise.

Lots of good info here this morning - thanks guys. Guess that if the snowploughs are struggling then that explains why us undertaking "care in the community" haven't seen any yet.
So, the next question is "Sunday looks to be a write off for public transport, but will they get it sorted by tomorrow?" I know that the Germans pride themselves on keeping things running and pretending that it isn't all snowy and snarled up, but they will have their work cut out today.

hallelujah i finally made it out of sofia yesterday afternoon & am now back after my friday flight was cancelled due to snow! my personal rant here:
Getting stuck in Sofia, Bulgaria.
last night, the shuttle driver at FRA airport said he waited nearly 6 hours at the airport early on saturday b/c the passengers he was picking up from India had not only a 1.5 hr. delay, but it took them 2 hours to deplane because, and get this, the doors were so frozen, they could not get them open! they couldn't get out the luggage or passengers!
i'm in Mannheim today & it's sunny & no hint of snow coming.
