As of 9.40 pm the MVV has terminated all surface trafic!!! This is NOT a joke!

A two-line sentence hidden on the Bayern 3 traffic news webpage confirms that the MVV has suspended bus and tram lines. U-Bahns and S-Bahns appear to be operating as normal.

I've looked on the relevant websites and can't find anything. Any idea whether the MVV U-Bahn (the above ground bit) and BOB are working?
profundo
It is 7:20am, and I have been up for an hour and haven't seen or heard a bus or tram running yet. The taxi drivers are out but they claim that the S-Bahn isn't running. Your best bet to get somewhere in town right now is by taxi.

The MVV site doesn't show any delays or give any announcements that I can find. Last night the news kept showing the traffic accidents of people coming back from holiday, and didn't mention that I could tell about the situation today.

The Munich Airport only shows a few cancelations of European flights, with all the international flights still running.

Does anyone have a weather report of how much snow has fallen? To me it looks like about 2 feet has collected.
YorkshireLad6
City trams and most buses are cancelled. SBahn and UBahn are still officially running, but in many cases and areas delayed as drivers have been advised to "drive with caution and no especial regard for the timetables".

In Garching I can measure it - last cleared the snow last night about midnight (just by walking through it). This morning there is 10" of snow on top of my tracks...
YorkshireLad6
Spoke too soon: Update @7:35am - all SBahns are now at a standstill
thejarvii
@profundo - I hope your brother-in-law made it ok this morning. I'm sure he was quite worried.
Darkknight
Waited at the SBahn station for 15min, only to be told that the entire S-Bahn network has been shutdown as of 0700
Most Roads "out in the country", are also still snowed over with up to half a meter of snow, but they are working on it...
Darkknight
Sorry YL6 But as of 0700 the S-Bahn network was shut down as well.
Good thing I found someone to give me a lift home.. Haven't seen an SBahn for the last 1.5hrs or so..

Thanks, we'll see. His flight is at 10:00. The good news is that the incoming flight from ATL arrived this morning with only a 5 minute delay and that the international flights are still running. Let's just hope the roads aren't full of accidents at this time of day.

Showem and Greg have landed in Vienna, but their airline - in their no doubt infinite wisdom - is flying them up to Hamburg (blink.gif) instead of Munich.
Hopefully the Hamburg-Munich flight will land OK...

Personally I am just amazed anything is running in this weather. Most other countries would have completely shutdown with this much snow (Britain being a typical example of this).

Walked down to the local S-Bahn station at Geisenbrunn (S5) a few minutes ago. Everything is very quiet, tracks look as though nothing has been along for ages. Neighbour told me that the network will be down all day and mentioned electrical problems.

Roads also look pretty poor. The main roads are passable with care, but very few cars are out and so I don't think that weight of traffic will be enough to keep them clear. The local roads in our village have not been touched at all for over 24 hours, and you'd need a tractor to get anywhere! Add to that the number of tree branches that have collapsed under the weight of snow and the whole place is well snarled up.

Of course it is all rather attractive, and the kids have managed to get through 2 sets of dry clothes already, but any plans to go out have already been shelved sad.gif
mere
what?!!?! where i'm from nothing would've stopped for this much snow. yes, traffic would be slower, but that's about it
pootle
They say over 40cm of snow has fallen in 24hrs.

SBahn is stopped because of too many fallen trees.

Just trying to find some full official sources for things, and will post shortly

Bitte Vorsicht! Vermeiden Sie unnötige Kfz-Fahrten.

The Hochwasserdienst says we're up to 50cm snow now since yesterday... too much snow!
thesteve
Feck, stuck out in work in Erding untill 7, what are my chances of getting into town then?!
mere
so in my non-existent German-- basically everything minus transport to the airport and Pasing-Ostbanhof is shit down and no word when things'll reopen, is that correct? smile.gif
Lupo
I´m amazed that the S8 is still running between the aiport and Ostbahnhof...maybe the city pooled all their resources into keeping this line open, since it´s Munich´s link to the outside world.
canuck
@mere: Yep, you've got it right. From first-hand experience I know:

- SBahn between Pasing and Ostbahnhof is running. Not sure how often.
- S8 to airport is running only from Ostbahnhof. S1 is not running. All other SBahns are not running.
- Hauptbahnhof is a big mess. Most DB trains are delayed anywhere between 30mins to 2hrs.
- UBahn is running on sched
- Tram and Bus probably will be out the entire day. They just don't have enough snow removal equipment.
- Taxis are hard to come by.

All this and it's still snowing!! smile.gif
mere
@Canuck-- thanks for the confirmation smile.gif
HollyGolightly
they are cleaning off the roofs of our aparment complex...huge clumps of snow falling from the sky unsure.gif
VersatileAustralian
never seen this kind of snow in my life. good boots, will walk.

Just sent the kids out (we're in Sendling) to make some "scientific" measurements: right now we have a little over 50cm of snow in the garden.

Most Deutsche Bahn lines to the south of Munich have been closed.

Most flights within Germany have been cancelled.

are the s bahns still not running . could'nt find the link on google.de
mere
could the tram and SBahn PLEASE start running?!!?! i have my first day off in 11 days! and i NEED to get out of here!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
borracuda
had to walk an hour last night to even get to my place from U-Bahn. Buses were obviously not running and it's 5 stops..

I checked the MVV site but couldn't see anything about buses and trams being cancelled. Where does it say that? More importantly, will I be able to go to work tomorrow? sad.gif
BobTheBuilder
Does anybody have any up to date Deutsche Bahn info? Tried calling all their info numbers but the lines are all understandably jammed.
Small Town Boy
They really, really hide it away, but this morning I did find the up-to-date travel info on the DB website. The link is below; just type in the station you want. Trains that are on time are marked 'Pünktlich'. Those that are late are marked 'ca. xx Minuten später', trains that are cancelled are marked 'Zug fällt aus'. The other 90% of services which are simply marked with a hyphen... well, I guess that just means they don't have a clue themselves.

Assume that the train is cancelled unless it specifically says so otherwise.

Aktueller Abfahrtsplan
canuck
I was at HBF aboot 90mins ago and it was chaos. It was packed. Loads of people just waiting. I saw some trains coming and going, but most are delayed by at least 30mins. And I assume some are out right cancelled as well.
Lupo
Yeah...I can imagine...Ferien in Bayern end today...what a day to come back with all the kids, baggage, dogs etc.
nickjbutt
Lots of good info here this morning - thanks guys. Guess that if the snowploughs are struggling then that explains why us undertaking "care in the community" haven't seen any yet.

So, the next question is "Sunday looks to be a write off for public transport, but will they get it sorted by tomorrow?" I know that the Germans pride themselves on keeping things running and pretending that it isn't all snowy and snarled up, but they will have their work cut out today.
mere
i think it'll be fine by tomo, but no clue! smile.gif

yeah last night we returned from Oberlech/Lech Austria. it took us ages (left at 1720 and got back here around 2300something). massive back up on the autobahn so we took some diff route and sat on a mountain for a good 3 or so hours barely moving smile.gif

hallelujah i finally made it out of sofia yesterday afternoon & am now back after my friday flight was cancelled due to snow! my personal rant here:
Getting stuck in Sofia, Bulgaria.
last night, the shuttle driver at FRA airport said he waited nearly 6 hours at the airport early on saturday b/c the passengers he was picking up from India had not only a 1.5 hr. delay, but it took them 2 hours to deplane because, and get this, the doors were so frozen, they could not get them open! they couldn't get out the luggage or passengers!
i'm in Mannheim today & it's sunny & no hint of snow coming.
canuck
Good to hear you finally got back safe and sound Elfer.
UrbanAngel
I've finally found some info on the MVV service on the S Bahn website: www.s-bahn-muenchen.de (look at the top) where it says:

05/03/06 10.01am
Please note that because of the snowfall, the SBahns, busses and trams are no longer running.
If you have any questions, please contact us on 01805 661010.

Here's the weather report for the next 10 days (days of snow then days of rain): Wetter.com

Someone asked for an official source, I posted this to the other thread which is pretty much the same discussion now: www.s-bahn-muenchen.de

yeah, i was a bit confused UA about where I read what & where snow pics were posted.

MVV operates our works bus to Ottobrunn so if they stopped all of the normal bus services then presumably that will also be off = play day tomorrow biggrin.gif
mere
so yeah.. i'm stupid and live in Munich, but dont speak German-

what does that mean? are those Sbahns running? and what about tram and bus?

thanks! smile.gif
Small Town Boy
Those S-Bahn sections are open. All others are closed, as are bus and tram lines.
mere
thanks STB
perdido
I decided not to comwe into Muc. today and I am glad from what it sounds like. I am only an hour away but have bright skies and no snow . biggrin.gif
profundo
I just saw a Lufthansa bus go by so they must be running. The Lufthansa bus leaves every 20 minutes from the HBF and stops at Nordfriedhof (U3/6) on it's way to the airport.
mere
oh be quiet Perdido! smile.gif not funny! i have the day off and i'm stuck at the house (unless i feel like walking through half a meter of snow to just walk around w/o a purpose since no one here believes in shoveling.). so wahoo! heaps of kids are here and running aroudn screaming. i want to go out there and tell them all to shut up. oh well... this is just making me a more patient person... or something hopefully positive! smile.gif

Girlfriend phoned up and they said:

Trees on the track between Markt Schwaben and Erding. Trees are being cleared now, but unsure if it will be successfull today.

All you Sunday Shifters at Amadeus :-)

So keep checking the website I suppose
