The 5th Munich Media Marathon in on 10 OCT 04, Starting and ending at the Olympic Stadiam, the route takes you through the entire city, sounds pretty good.
Is anyone interested or has ran the marathon in the past?
Looking for a training buddy in the Erding area.

bf ran it in 2002. 41 km. took him nearly half an hour just to get started. pretty nice run as well through english garden, but my bf said this was the worst part cause there were hardly any spectators in the garden and this was right when he had lost his runners high & could have used cheering and clapping. i think this was between km 21 and 31.

i was on my bike and met him at various points around munich so i guess i also rode about 40 km that day.

Right have just registered for this Marathon, not sure if its a good idea being one week after the finish of Oktoberfest. ..

Anyone else doing it???
canuck
The date (just after Oktoberfest) is the only reason why I have not ran this marathon yet. I've helped out twice (that you can do with a hangover...not running).

I'm running the Berlin and Jungfrau later this year, so I probably won't run the München one this year either.

Canuck, only you could run the "virgin" marathon... tongue.gif

I heard you could rollerblade it, is that true?
canuck
Yeah, I'll have a special marathon session with any good looking virgin! tongue.gif
JoolyBooly
I guess that rules me out then... sad.gif
canuck
One more thing...Last time I heard, a marathon is 42.2km, not 41km?? It does make a difference believe me...
powerfull
I've run it twice and agree with the above comments:

The timing with Octoberfest is always stupid especially because there is always a cold going around after the festival. (Wonder why...)

Also the hardest part is the English garden, because there is not a lot of spectators and the path is a bit tight so everyone seems to slow down which is about at the worst time- Km 30-35. Mind you I don t have any fond memories of Zamdorf...

With only 8 weeks to train- maybe might be a bit tight.
Pascoe
Is anyone else insane enough from TT to run this a week after the Ofest???
canuck
I just ran the Berlin marathon on Sunday...DURING Oktoberfest. My longest training run was 10k. I was at Oktoberfest 4 different days before the race. I should not have finished with a 3:28. Beat that beeeaaatttcchh! biggrin.gif
tench
Canuck.. I think he will...
Pascoe
Canuck,

I was waiting for you to mention your one mate tongue.gif Congrats and not sure I will beat 3:28 though, was that your first one???
tench
3.28?? I could do that running backwards with a full mass balanced on my head!!! tongue.gif

Unfortunately I won't be able to prove it as I'm currently injured... wink.gif

Well done though canuck. Sounds like the hard training paid off..
By the way, I bought a new bike so if you're still up for doing the trans-alp next your, I'm definately game...
canuck
It was my 6th actually...Experience and damn good tea at the food/drink stations were the only reasons I actually finished. I did in total 19k of training for the marathon in total...Not too smart.

Hopefully I can walk normally in 2 or 3 days...
Pascoe
any tips for a marathon virgin then Canuck???
canuck
They're pretty obvious..

1) Drink tonnes of water the week before the race. Eat lots of pasta..
2) A bit of coffee just before the race helps me out.
3) Run a slow first 5-10k. Don't start out too fast.
4) Keep a positive attitude and try to keep your energy up. Talk with people a bit.
5) Break race up into smaller pieces...5k chunks. Or from drink station to drink station. Don't think well I've got 26km left to go. Think I've got 3km to the next drink station...I can do that easily.
6) Love the tea and grapefruit...
7) At the start, get in a group that has the same pace as you.
8) Run on the sides or on the sidewalk if you can...you will keep your pace and you can avoid slower runners.
9) Drink water early in the race...especially if its hot.
10) Don't wear a watch.

Right the last post on this thread before the run on Sunday if anyone is up on Sunday morning at 10am my start number is 4659 and I think I will be wearing the new red england football away shirt plus a Oktoberfest 2004 hat if it is not too warm:-)

The link below shows the course and I hope to run each 1 km in around 5mins so you should be able to work out where I will be!!!

canuck

Showem
I'll be shouting and waving from our balcony and if the weather is nice, might head up into Englischer Garten where you will definitely appreciate the support.

***LIVE UPDATE***

Pascoe has just passed our window and looking strong. Here's the evidence:

Go out along the route and cheer him on!

Pascoe
Showem,

Great pic and thanks for your support!!! I think if you had taken one after 30km I wouldn't of looked so happy... smile.gif an old injury returned and I limped/ran the last 12km in a lot of pain. Still finished in 3hrs 44mins unofficially.

I would recommend doing one it is one hell of an experience.

and lastly I will be in GMs for a couple of celebration drinks tonight and everyone/anyone is welcome to join so pop on down if you feel like it.

Alan.
canuck
(A little late but) Congrats Pascoe...good run considering the bad conditions and Wiesn timing!!
gideon
well done pascoe, was that your england shirt you were wearing???
jeremy
@Pascoe:

Well done!
Showem
Yep, it was fun to watch, but it was cold to run I imagine.
jeremy
