Long-term bike rentals

Rental of bikes for a month or more

Does anyone know of a good place to rent a bike for a longer period, a month for example? I know this has been talked about before, but I couldn't find a solid answer, and the talk is scattered in topics with slightly different titles. So I thought I'd start a new thread to bring all the resources in one place. :-)

If there were, it would be a lot more expensive than just buying one for €20 at the Flohmarkt. Take a look at Flohmarkt Riem.

There's a second hand bike shop up beside the English language "Cinema". I think the street is called Nymphenbergerstr. I picked up a good quality bike for €100 there. The bike I bought had been sold to someone else at the begining of the summer and they bought it back off him at the end of the summer. I then picked it up as a cheap winter bike. I'm sure you could come to a similar deal with them. The bikes in the Flohmaerkte generally require some extra work on them, so you'd need to be able to estimate how much this will cost to do yourself, or get done at a shop.

I'm sure a month's rental will cost you more than €100. In fact, you can get new bikes for about €200 and often less. I think there were some in OBI for €179 the other day, and once spring comes you'll find some cheap ones in many of the supermarkets. Of course the quality of these isn't great. You need to ensure all nuts and bolts are tight before cycling off, and then check them again after a few weeks. €300 will get you a semi decent one in Karstadt or Radlbauer or any of the lower end bike shops. And you could try to sell that for €150 or €200 at the end of the month.

I've actually done both. I bought a bike for €35 and put €30 of work into it (at the bike shop, not myself). I also bought one for €100 at Second Hand Sports, the shop that Persius mentioned on Nymphenbergerstraße, and that one didn't last as long.

The first bike I bought in Munich was a brand new one from Walmart for €119. It broke within the first week, because the guy who put it together forgot to lubricate the pedal assembly. If you buy a brand new cheapie, I recommend taking it apart and putting it together again properly.

My €100 Walmart bike was great - lasted through a lot. In fact, I'm almost sure it would still be here if I hadn't abandoned it inadvertently at the Hannover Hbf. rolleyes.gif

We spent a week looking at our options, and in the end we bought city bikes at Der RadlBauer for 200 euros each. At the end of our 5 weeks of riding, we sold them on eBay for around 100 euros. It was nice to have new bikes without any maintenance issues. It was certainly cheaper than renting. The best rental rate I found was a small shop on Klenzsestr or Jahnstr in upper Isarvorstad, but it still was cheaper to buy and sell in the end. I think it was around 20 euros a week for dumpy bikes.
