"retro" t-shirts at € 20 each!

Where do you think half the stuff on ebay comes from? I did it myself for a couple of years, used to have a daily route of charity shops that i would visit to find stuff I even had it down to knowing the days when new stock came in so i could beat others to it.

You would be surprised how many people there *used* to be out there in the UK doing this. I say used to because the charity shops have got wise and the things that you used to make money on now cost alot more in the shops than they used to.
MonksTown
The shops in Munich are a massive rip off anyway.

I was after some gear for a local *cough* fancy dress party and it was a bloody fortune, much cheaper to buy off e-bay. cool.gif
kitty-kat
I really missed the US thrift stores (charity shops) when living in Germany. There were lots of really big ones near to where I lived- Salvation Army, Disabled Veterans, etc. They had tons of clothes, furniture, appliances, lights, you name it! And because they would collect for free, you could easily get rid of stuff you no longer needed without feeling like you've wasted it by just throwing it away.
Showem
MonksTown, it's good to hear the background story to the charity clothes things. However, it doesn't seem to change the issue that there's no where else appropriate to give your clothes to, is there?
MonksTown
Diakonie in Neuhausen get my recomendation as afaik the DO support people directly with clothing and furniture..and household stuff...and they have a "real" charity shop open to the public at low prices.

MonksTown in nice to church institutiuon shocker! smile.gif

Weiss Rabe in Landsberge Strasse also, at least for futrniture.

Plenty of oldskool TTers used to get their furniture from there. wink.gif
Showem
I've bought tonnes of stuff at Diakonie, and donated to there too. But as far as I know, it's only furniture and household goods, isn't it?
MonksTown
Katrina has mentioned before on Blutenburgstrasse they have an "upmarket" store for womanr's clothes.
I am 99% sure they give clothes out to the poor and destitute (Thursdays I think).

Perhaps some of the charities working with the homeless in Munich might want clothes too.

They have clothes as well, at least their shop in Sendling does.
Showem
Well, I don't think much that I have can to give away be classed as "upmarket", even stretching the idea somewhat. I'll try phoning Weisse Rabe though.
Katrina
Yes the Blutenburgstr. store is still there, you can shop, drop off or have your things collected. Actually, I've been in the shop with you showem looking at dirndls smile.gif
What doesn't make it into that store goes either onto the rail at GebrauchtWarenhaus in the Landsberger (but it is indeed predominantly furniture & household goods) or to the Kleiderkammer. The Kleiderkammer is on the Landsberger, part of the Innere Mission and gives the clothes directly to the needy. My cycle route home from work goes past it (all cycle paths you see, better for the wobbly kneed).
Moonboot
I've just emailed Diakonie to pick up some furniture from my Keller cuz am moving soon will ask about clothes cuz have two bin liners full am sure their website says they take clothes though.

about once a month we get little signs posted outside our block of flat saying a clothing collection will follow in a few days we just have to leave the stuff outside in bags. I always check the notes for which 'charity' the stuff goes to; often it's an East-European-sounding name and a mobile phone number.

would like to know my stuff REALLY goes to needy people that's why am glad to know about Diakonie.

but they also have the charity shops for people who really need it.

I guess the reason charity shops don't exist as such in Germany is that the people who 'really need it', i.e. on low incomes, can apply for money from the Sozialamt if they need new clothes.
MonksTown
*Laughs* You want to know how much money the Sozialamt pays out, it's about EUR 350 a month plus rent, people on welfare don't live in the lamp of luxury in Munich!

The charities say the whole POINT of charity shops isn't necessarily to enable people on low incomes to buy stuff but to riase money. People on low incomes can often get clothed cheaper at chain stroes than at charity shops.

Anyway, the at-the-door collections are a convenient way of disposing of old clothes. Whether or not its a "foreign" name is irrelevent, clothes donated this way go into the second hand clothes inductry as described above. The flyers do say it is a COMMERCIAL collection. Your old clothes you put out in sacks on the day are NOT going to be donated directly to a needy person.

Uh, you can do that in the US as well. Where do people get the idea that US has no social assistance programs?

€350 plus rent is a hell of a lot more than some people i know have to live off who do NOT get social payments. They should consider themselves lucky. and get a job!

Good point dry.gif
MonksTown
There is some low pay out there and some very low state pensions but €350 plus rent is the lowest dole level and there are few people on a lower income than that. Homeless, refugees etc.

*Waves at Norman Tebbit, pity you aren't going to the AM's tonight*
Eleanor Rigby
It's not as uncommon as you think MT. You can live fairly comfortably on €350,00 per month.

No, you can't be going out for cocktails and expensive meals all the time but you're hardly destitute.

EDIT: unless you mean €350,00 per month per family.

my bar bill is bigger than that not even counting TT events

Edit : bugger, you edited it and now it sounds reasonable and makes me look the twat i am sad.gif

That's because you're always buying drinks for those of us who can't afford them oursleves. biggrin.gif
MonksTown
To cover ALL your living expenses, long term including clothes and household stuff... ???

But that's another thread...
Eleanor Rigby
Yes, including transportation to and from work as well.

Perhaps some people are just used to living more luxurious lifestyles and don't realise it's quite easy to live frugally. wink.gif
MonksTown
Sorry ER, I don't beleive there is anyone working a regular full time job in Munich taking home just EUR 350 over their rent per month.
Dolphin8
Hi,

Does anyone know where you can donate your old clothes in Munich city center?

Thanks,
Dolphin

there are big doodahs all over the place, where you can chuck them in
they look a bit like the things you recycle your bottles in, except they're a kind of pukey beige colour
Panama
Well I don't know about a specific place were you can go and talk to someone to give clothes away, but all around the city there are these metal booths (something like a creamy color) where you can deposit your unwanted clothes and then they are collected by the red cross and distributed to whoever needs them.
Malcolm Spudbury
You also might often get people leaving collection bags at the front door of your apartment.

Be careful though. Not all of them are run by registered charities, so you might end up giving your clothes to some company that will just sell the good stuff and only send the useless crap on to the people who actually need it.
Dame Edna
I have just found a good place to take mens clothes to. The homeless men's home in Pilgersheimer str Untergiesing will accept all second hand mens clothing. If you want to make sure that good second clothes get a new owner who needs them rather than be cut up for scrap material then this is definitely the place to go to. I just went in with the bags and they took them without any hassles, and were incredibly grateful.

Address: Pilgersheimerstr.11 / 81543 München Tel: 089/625020 Fax: 089/6250233 (near Kolumbusplatz U1/2)
Showem
Great tip Dame Edna, thanks for that!
Katrina
Kleidsam also take donations and will collect (or bung them on the doorstep just before they opne like I do). Ladies' clothes only. Best are sold in the store, some go to the Diakonie Kleiderkonto, around the corner in Landshuter Allee, where homeless people may get free clothing. Good place for getting rid of those warm sweaters that have been shown a little too much love.

About to donate some clothes. Here is a list if anyone else is interested .. (last updated in Jan 2006)

What's the best way of getting rid of old clothes. I know sometimes companies come around and pick them up but I always seem to miss that. Does the wertstoffhof accept them. Or are there some recycling bins around.

For the google police googling "altkleid sammlung münchen" or "altkleid" on münchen.de does not return anything useful.

Don't you have a "altkleider" box anywhere near your place?
Usually you can put them in a plastic bag and dump them in one of those.
Janx Spirit
Altkleidersammlung or Kleiderspende (they are beige in Munich I think):

DDBug
There is one hidden away on the corner of Destousches Strasse and Erich-Kästner-Str. not too far from the murder's home, but too far to carry I guess... Just a thought, it's the only one I know in the neighborhood. There may be some on the other side of Karstadt. They seem to put them in quiet residential streets here.

well, the one near my place is yellow.

kleider spende on on münchen.de also produces naught.

I live at Nordbad, if anybody knows of such a bin close to me please tell me.
MadAxeMurderer
Destousches Strasse and Erich-Kästner-Str is not too far, thanks DD.

well, this topic is in Life in Munich, although it's proabably a Germany-wide thing...

a colleague of mine, an American, who has been in Germany for 10 years, said never to put your clothes in those clothes containers cause they end up in a shredder used to making cheap upholstery. i'm constantly putting my old, but good, clothes in those containers. so there is no guarantee where our clothes go? I do miss Goodwill or Salvation Army.
Alan G.
Does anyone know where to dump old clothes? Is there a list of the places where to dump them? I have seen some beside bottle recycling bins but I am nor sure where!

Are there any charity shops or organisations that would collect kids and adult clothes, kids toys, bric-a brac from me? After reading the thread, I'm not sure about the clothing bins. A lot of the stuff is good and I would rather know someone got the use out of it without some Co. getting financial gain.

Also someone suggested selling the stuff as flohmarkt lots and getting rid of it that way. blink.gif
maddigliana
I'm just wondering if anyone knows where I can leave items for people in need. In Australia there are large bins for this type of thing (Salvation Army etc.) but I haven't seen anything like that in Munich.

Any ideas?

Okay ... thanks for moving the post. I had done a search but obviously didn't use the correct search terms!

Hi,
After moving into our new flat we've got a big bag of clothes to give away, ideally to charity. In the UK and France we found these charity institutions easy to find, but here..
Anyone having an idea about where to go in Haidhausen?
Thanks a lot,
Marieke

If you'd have done a search for 'charity clothes', you would have found this thread with information on how and where to donate clothes around Munich including a list sorted by area.
Carm
there is a large church on Brezlauerstr (I think- its near Orleans pl) they have a KleiderSpender box out front, they take clothes for the charities.
Most Churches have one of these large white bins.
nickgraveley
Anyone know of a clothes bin near muffathalle/deutsches museum?

I'm enjoying the "Don't put your clothes in a Red Cross bin because..." legends. Keep them coming.
