Leipzig is one of my favorite ever cities internationally. Not so much the appeal of how beautiful the city is, but more on how it functions. So much to see and do and in my opinion would be one of the most live-able cities in Germany apart from the unemployment side of things. I dont think you can really appreciate the place by just doing a day trip there. Great selection of bars and clubs, friendly locals and if you explore the city over a period of time there is so much to see and do.

Leipzig over Dresden any day of the week, even though Dresden does have a very beautiful city centre.

Best Weinnachtsmarkt in Deutschland auch.

History and culture isn't all about eating ice cream next to statues of some old battle hero and marvelling at perfectly refurbished renaissancey-type buildings. Leipzig DOES have character. It's very raw and very real and very atmospheric. Sure, sometimes the feeling you get isn't overwhelmingly positive, but character isn't always about everything being pleasant and charming. Well that's my impression anyway, I mean it must be different for everyone but I think you always have more fun if you keep your mind open. I guess you might say that you didn't LIKE Leipzig's character, but I find it quite strange to say it doesn't have one.

i've been here in leipzig for 8 months now. live right downtown, its not the worlds most beautiful city. well inside the ring its quite nice though.

would be interested in meeting other expats, as 90% of my friends here are german, and sometimes they are a little bit on the strange side.

I don't think East Germans have it quite as cushy as you're assuming.

No, they don't. In some parts, the unemployment rate reaches 20%, their rents - about 50OM before (Ostmark/East German currency) - soared up after reunification while their salaries didn't...to name just a few things...

If you go to Leipzig, or live there - visit the Sinfonie (in Gottschedstr), a cafe with the loveliest choice of hot chocolates smile.gif))))
