Configuring VoIP on an AVM FRITZ!Box 7170 router

AVM (Fritz) 7170 Router

It was recommended to me that I buy this router as it is highly configurable but am finding it extremely difficult to configure my VoIP accounts! sad.gif

I had 2 phones connected directly to my old router and could configure VoIP proxy and STUN servers as well as account information for each line. Each phone used a different VoIP provider (one in the Uk and one in Poland).

This router seems to have no obvious way of configuring these accounts - it seems to want me to enter numbers to dial (which I assume are over the fixed telephone line - maybe I am wrong).

The instructions mention a field for entering the proxy server but there isn't one.

If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it...

Telephonie > Internettelephonie > Neue Internetrufnummer >

tick the verwenden box, select andere anbieter

put ANYTHING numerical as the rufnummer

enter username and pass.

registrar is something like sip1.voipbuster.com depending on your provider.

uebernehmen, wait a min for it to register, finito!

Bzzztttt...

Many providers require the correct "Internet Ruffnumber" to be supplied
for the connection to work correctly.. As this info may also be sent to the
registrar server, before/after logon is allowed..
Kings Town
Many, but not most, infact 66.67% of mine don't, sipgate and stana being ones that do, but info packed post 1 left a little to the imagination..

Let's start simple eh?
Darkknight
Why not fill it in with the correct # any way since you gonna put crap in anyway.. This also helps to configure the phone devices for the correct #, instead of trying to guess which "ANYTHING" number matches which internal phone.. (HPL has multiple int. phones)
YorkshireLad6
I think that using the correct number makes it unwieldy as the numbers are so different and usually also long. Better to use the matching "12x" number which is also used to select outgoing lines for simplicity and consistency... The Fritzbox doesn't need any STUN entry - STUN is simply used to by bypass awkward firewalls. "Proxy" and "Registrar" are the same as far as Fritz is concerned. Make sure your Firmware is uptodate (current version is 29.04.01) as AVM have been making dramatic changes recently...

@YL6
Depends on the provider.. My VOIP # is the same size as my Landline #

Well let's see how HartlepoolLad gets on, before we continue all this flirting..

You only have one provider? I'm in a mail exchange with AVM at the moment that 10 is not enough...

@YL6

Your setup with 10 providers!!! Wow you world jet setting fellow you...
I'm sure thers a MOD somewhere that will allow more biggrin.gif

Thanks for all the posts... I managed to work it out anyway... It was the terminology and inconsistent help material that confused me! :}

For the 2 providers that I use, I can use any number as "Internetrufnummer".

What I didn't realise was that there are many many advanced features (including "Proxy Server", "Country Code", "City Code") that can be activated by going to:

System / Ansicht

and activating the "Expertenansicht aktivieren" checkbox.

Hope this helps others...

Also, from my experience of this router to date seem extremely positive... seems very stable, computers connect almost instantly upon logging in, highly customisable (runs LINUX for those who do not know), easily installed and configured (also for dummies). Highly recommended! smile.gif

(Between EUR 180-200.00 in eBay, otherwise difficult to find atm since ISPs ARCOR & 1&1 have priority. But you can get them for EUR 1,00 in conjunction with internet contract with these providers).

A just got a Fritz!Box 7170 (down to € 150 incl. shipping new from www.f-m-shop.de) and have a few questions regarding VOIP setup.

YL6 got me started with helpful info regarding recommended VOIP providers (found on other threads), but now I have some questions regarding making the setup simpler.

I have an ISDN (Siemens cordless) phone that is setup with two MSNs (I have no idea what that stands for, but seems to be the phone "line" that is used to make or receive calls) -- my festnetz and my SIP number (VOIP). At first the phone would not ring with incoming VOIP calls, until I turned on receive for the VOIP MSN in the phone itself.

Here's the question: how do I tell the phone/router to use the VOIP connection only when I am making international calls? Currently, I have to go through a bunch of steps to change the MSN of the phone prior to a call. I think the 7170 setup screen advises that I do not want to tell my phone any MSNs and just let the router make the choice, but I'm not sure. Before I got the router the phone would not work until I assigned an MSN, so I am hesitant to try that change.

Also, what is a "Preselection"? It looks like what I would call an area code or city code, but I really have no idea.

I have more questions, but these are the most important. At first the German-only interface of the 7170 was a problem, but now I think that even in English I would be confused due to all the strange terminology. Thanks for all help and please correct my incorrect use of terminology!

Go into the Dialingplan setup and add an entry for "00" , then select which of your VOIP providers it get routed to..
All the info is in the users manual, and if you want the manual in English it's avail. from AVM too... They may even
have the English Firmware avail by now...
Freiheit
Does the dialling plan override the MSN selection in the phone?

I'll check out the AVM website for the manual. The latest firmware is only available in German I think, but I'll look again.
Darkknight
The Outbound Dialing plan is for ALL MSN/Phones. The Inbound Plan is for which phone rings for a certain Number.

Also, what is a "Preselection"?

Most VoIP providers require you to enter a complete number including area code, so (if you are in Munich, for example you need to dial 089-1234567 rather than 1234567). Preselection allows you to tell the Fritz to precede a number entered without area code prior to handing it over to the VoIP service...
Freiheit
Ok, thanks! I'll add a dialing plan. I did not find anything in English -- firmware or manuals -- for the 7170, but the 7140 manual in English looks pretty much the same.
