Any interest in a cross-country skiing trip this Sunday? 18.Dec.2005

Take the Bayerische Oberland Bahn (BOB) from platform 34 at the Hauptbahnhof at 07:42 hrs.

Arrive Bayerischzell at 9am. Ski up the trail for an hour or two. Lunch and Weißbier at the Greek place, then back and home to Munich in time for afternoon tea and cake.

Sharing a Schönes Wochenend ticket: €30,- split five ways = €5 each.

Skiing is free if you've got your own kit. Otherwise it can be rented in Bayerischzell for €10 for the day (skiis, poles, and boots).

Conditions in Bayerischzell currently looking good (although I've not been there myself yet this year):

Alle Loipen gespurt

Langlaufen ist in Bayrischzell bei guten Bedingungen möglich. Alle Loipen sind sowohl für Klassik, wie auch Skating gespurt.

Wir wünschen viel Spaß zum Einstieg in den Langlaufwinter
Showem
Ooooh, tempting. Not sure what time the sister-in-law arrives. Otherwise, would be into it another weekend.

But I think you can do it cheaper than €30. It only costs €20 for 5 to take the BOB on the weekend, both Saturday and Sunday. €17 for a day.
davo
This does sound tempting. I haven't gone cross-country skiing in years, but I'd like to try it again. A pre-7am wakeup is a bit early for a Sunday (for me), but I'm penciling it in as a definite maybe just the same. Would be interested to see if any others are into it...

Lunch and Weißbier at the Greek place

If you are referring to Zipfelwirt I have sad news for you...they are no longer open...Im not sure if they finally have a new owner but last news I heard (about 2 weeks ago) was that they closed down...Bäckeralm should still be open...they'll never go anywhere smile.gif
Editor Bob
It is early, agreed. But snow conditions are better for langlaufing the earlier you go. It's colder in the morning, you see. By afternoon the sun tends to melt the top layer and makes the going sticky and slow - if you're lucky enough to have sunshine, that is. Besides, you can sleep for 75 minutes on the train.

Note that southern-Munich residents can pick up the train at 07:49 hrs from Harras.

€17 for a day BOB ticket? Even better! That makes €3.40 per person if we have five peeps joining.
Stranger
OK, Can I book places for an international contingent of 1 Brit, 1 Irish and 1 Ruskie please. I'll jump in at Donnersbergerbrücke. the other 2 will meet up at Hbf. PM me with meeting deets and if you have it the time the BOB flys through Donnersbergerbrücke..

SOB

@sob- love to go sometime w/ you! can go in am, but need to be back to work most afternoons-but can take off almost whenever i want (supposedly, but never seems to happen that way)!
Showem
Won't make it. Sil arrives at 7am. Have fun!
Jeeves
Great idea and I'd be up for it, but not on the last Sunday before Christmas. Too many last-minute panicky things to do.
Editor Bob
OK. Meet at 7.35am sharp, on the platform. Depending on numbers we can decide there and then how many tickets are needed. Tix can be bought right there, by the train.

So far we have five definites - Davo, Stranger +2, plus myself.

The last cross-country ski trip was good. Six of us went to Bayerischzell.

Next trip:

Date: Sunday 8th January 2006
Destination: Lenggries - see current trail conditions and full trail map
Meet: 7.50am at the Hauptbahnhof, platform 34
Train leaves: Hbhf 8.02am - Donnersbergerbrücke 8.05am, Harras 8.09am, Solln 8.13am
Train arrives: 9.08am

Current conditions are "good" with over 51Km of trails prepared. Here's the webcam view from a few moments ago:

Rail tickets cost something like €25 for a group of five. We'll split the cost accordingly on the morning.

Bring your own x-country skiis or hire them at Lenggries - they cost around €11 for the day.

Post here if you'll be joining us.

Forecast: Yahoo! Weather - Lenggries
Jeeves
Looking good for this. I'll commit on Saturday.
Gen
can't go this time but will you go again the weekend after?
Editor Bob

Do we have to dress up like König Ludwig? Oh, guess not, as the 34th INT. KÖNIG LUDWIG LAUF 04. - 05. 02. 2006 dates don't match. All right, I'll come along too, even though it is nearly a two hour train ride. Who volunteers to wake the sleepers when we get there?
Jeeves
You have to change trains to get to Oberammergau, so you can't sleep the whole way. And last time I went it was a bus from Murnau, so if that's still the arrangement than it makes it even harder to sleep.

I went down there last year for a spot of X-C and guess what, I didn't check beforehand and it was the day of the KL Lauf. Doh. Had a great time standing around in the sun watching everyone else do the work.
Darkknight
There is a Train Change in Murnau, But the RB goes directly to Oberammergau Bahnhof.

Is it possible to rent skies there? I would really like to come, but I sold mines before I moved to Germany. sad.gif
Editor Bob
The air is free. But as for skis, yes, I am 95% certain you can rent them there.
lencha
We would love to do it, there is two of us and we will join you from the Harras station. Should I assume that we will recognize you as people holding cross-country skiis or will there be another way of seeing each other?

Alena and Axel (lencha)
conor
Is this place suitable for beginners??
i.e. not so hilly, and not packed with experts??
kit
Are you guys skate skiing or classic/traditional, or did I miss that?

I've got a commitment sometime Sunday in Munich but maybe I could meet you guys for a couple of hours. I have skate skis.

-kit
Editor Bob
Lencha, great that you and Alena would like to join. Don't rely on spotting the rest of us by virtue of us being the ones on the train holding x-country skis. The whole train will be full of people holding x-country skis!

Just get on the train then we'll find each other via cell phone, or something. We can exchange numbers via PM.

Conor, I've never been x-country at Lenggries before, so I don't know. I don't expect it'll be too hilly.

Kit, I think most people are expecting classic skiing, not skating. As for your commitment back in Munich, what time? Last Sunday we went we ski'ed 10am - 12 noon, had a 2 hour lunch, skied back for the 4pm train, and were back in Munich about 6pm.

For Sunday:

Definites: Lencha, Alena, me

Hello!

I'd love to come along! Had just been checking out the Lenggries trails for Sunday yesterday. Think I was there last year & its a fairly easy run & very pwetty, lined by trees and such. I have ancient skis and no technique, so I might fade into the landscape eventually... biggrin.gif
c u on Sunday!
Jeeves
I've found all my bits so I'll be there!

Likely there'll be around ten of us, i.e. we can share two Schönes Wochenende rail tickets.

Guys,

I'm doubtful for tomorrow, especially since I just tossed back the first drink of the evening. Otherwise it probably doesn't make a lot of sense if everyone is classic skiing and I have skate skis. Not to mention I've got lack of wax/too much wax issues. Problems, problems...

EB...just in case I do crawl out of bed in time I'll call you on your mobile to find you guys in Lenggries. I need to be in Munich by 2pm so its still a possibility. If not, everyone have fun and I hope to meet up again in a couple of weeks.

Malcolm Spudbury
Great trip today.

Pictures are in the gallery: Cross-Country skiing day trip, Lenggries

Jeeves
Spudbury I'm impressed that you managed to stay awake long enough to post all those pics last night.
Excellent day out, although I think we should go for bigger schnitzels next time.

is is that professional that you have to bring the correct type of cross country skis? ohmy.gif

looks like the alps had blue skies yesterday. Nice
kit
The classic ski motion of front/back, back/front in a fairly rigid line tends to aggravate my delicate knees. That's why I picked up skate skiing.

Plus, from the pix it only looks like a classic loipe track was put down in Lenggries, oder?
Jeeves
"Oder" is the case. There is what looks like a decent skating track and there were groups having skate skiing lessons on it as well as locals dressed in skin-tight suits bombing along it. It isn't as long as the classic loipe and doesn't follow it all the way either.
Jeeves
Mr Spudbury and his guest photographer pretty much have the event covered from a picture point of view. Nevertheless I've added half a dozen more to the gallery which might be worth a look.
Stranger
Nice Pics, Agree on the Schnitzels, but the waitress was cute. Are We a go for next Sunday?

I think I've convinced hubby to come too. Not on the KLL though, I'm too competitive to want to lose to 1000 people. Gimme a sport I'll win at.
plastic
Just had my Ski's waxed ... would very much like to come along this Sunday, provided I can get out of bed in time.
Editor Bob
Trip to Lenggries last Sunday was good. Click to see the photos.

Details for this Sunday 15.Jan.2006:

Meet: Hauptbahnhof platform 30 at 7:20am

Don't buy a ticket in advance. We'll share one or more Schönes Wochenende tickets, ca. €30 for five people, i.e. ca. €6 each.

Take the 7.32am train to Murnau, changing there for the train to Oberammergau. Arrive Oberammergau at 9.19 am. Stop to hire skiis for those who don't have their own - this will cost around €13 per person. Likely schedule: 2 or 3 hours of skiing, stop for Schnitzel and Weißbier, ski for another couple of hours, then probably the 4.40pm or 5.40pm train back to Munich, arriving home 6.30 or 7.30pm. This will be classic cross-country skiing, not skating.

Definites: Gen, Véronique, Spudbury + 1, Stranger, Jeeves, and myself = 7 so far

Everyone is welcome. Beginners to expert. Post here if you plan to join so that we know how many rail tickets to get.

Weather forecast is sunny!

@Editor Bob

I can't make it, I'm both sick and overloaded with work sad.gif Hope to make some other time. Have a nice trip.
Gen
any possibility of starting just an hour later? Hubby does want to come but really doesn't want to get up quite so early, and I can guarantee I'll be in a better mood if we go later... if everyone else is gung ho on the early start fine though.
Editor Bob
Afraid not, Gen. Meeting 7.20am at the Hauptbahnhof. The good weather means that it's going to be too nice of a day to loose any of it.
plastic
Count me in please.
jeremy
EB: recommend the Loipe at Jachenau. My first and beautiful.
ami_tom
Count me in as a definite this week!
I also need to rent skis and boots.
See you at the Hbh.
Jeeves
Cracking day even if I did sit down unintentionally only three times.
Some of the evidence is already available for all to see.

ami_tom
That was a memorable trip! Thanks EB for organizing it and Jeeves for all the photos!
I'm sure the waitress is waiting for us to return sometime huh.gif
Jeeves
Still waiting for Spudbury to post his pics if only to prove that I was actually there.
As for the waitress, she was fine until our lawyer spoke up wink.gif
ami_tom
Here are some more shots, not sure what they prove...the pic of Jeeves was not included as he was mostly obscured by large glasses of Weissbeir biggrin.gif
