Okay, I know this sounds horribly naive, but what the heck is selvedge stitch? I need to know, please!!!

Google ist Mist.

btw - I think Stitch & Bitch at Escobar will still be considered a Toytown event. Just because the odd German word is spoken, doesn't make it not Toytown. I mean, what about the German speaking stammtisch that happens once a month? Is that not Toytown coz German is spoken? huh.gif

I love Germans and I love Germany, but my German is crap and so is my knitting. Not much hope for this project then laugh.gif
GreenTea
Hi Stitch 'n Bitchers ... I used to knit and crochet a very long time ago, and I have some lovely mohair wool from those days that I'm probably never going to use now - would anyone be interested in it? Do you still meet at Escobar on Sundays? If so, I might just drop by with the stuff, as it's in my neck of the woods anyway. Of course I realise there's a danger that if I go there I might get "hooked" again on crochet, but I'm willing to take that risk. smile.gif
C_in_Märchenland
Oh boy, it seems I've somehow missed a lot. I wanted to apologize for my silence and not being able to get to SnB for so many weeks now that I've lost count. Been out of town or otherwise busy for too many weekends, and this weekend will once again not be in Munich. I have in the meantime finally finished my scarf – and i quite like it. Anyway, if people are getting together another night of the week, I might be interested depending on the night, since Sundays have been such a pain recently. Ciao!
Nicky
@CinMärchenland Just suggest a night that suits you! And a place, if you have a preference, best central.
tinap
Hey guys,

Don't think I will be there today. I am going to the Newcomers Festival on Praterinsel from 1-? and then meeting up with a friend. Maybe next week, though we will be out of town and don't kow when we will be getting back. Hopefully my project will be done and in the mail before I see ya'll again. Might have to take a picture so you believe me.

Have fun today.

tinap
C_in_Märchenland
Tuesdays or thursdays would probably be good. I don't really have a preference for a place. I can think of places with good food/drinks, but nothing that would be esp. good for snb'ers (low smoke) comes to mind...
tinap
What about one of the coffee places, Starbucks or San Francisco or such? Nice comfy sofas and chairs, non smoking areas...? Or, I don't know if anyone has tried the new restaurant at the Gasteig...called Gasteig. Good food, wide drink selection, open all hours, great open area with couch seating, also outdoor seating, etc.

tinap
Nicky
How about next Wednesday? Gasteig place sounds great. 7.30? Who's coming? Maybe we should reserve a table?
tinap
Wed is the one night of the week I am not available sad.gif , and Tuesdays I have started a kayak course. Does Thurs work? No Toytown conflicts, and only one more work day to survive through before the weekend if we party too late. tongue.gif My other suggestion is Monday, as it would be something to look forward to the first day of the week. I want to attend both s & b's, and hopefully others will too.

tinap
Marilyn
I like the idea of Monday`s or Thursday`s for Wednesday just seems to me to be like it is called in America. Hump Day, and as you get older you just can`t seem to get over the hump. Besides Wednesday is Curry night and we can maybe get some people who normally go to Curry Night to participate in SNB so long as we don`t have it on same night. And some people want to go to both, places for SNB. Can someone get some info on this place. Like Directions. And if someone will make a call to make reservations at this other place and we`ll go check it out. But 7:30 is a bit too late as just when you get there and get your stuff out it is time to turn around and go home again. 6:30 to 7 sounds better. Now this is just my opinion. But the coffee shops are way to smokey both San Francisco and Starbucks, even though there is a no smoking area it is right next to the smoking area and everybody is just chain smoking in these places. I have been in both and am a smoker and both have bothered me because of way to much smoke. And when they start with the Cigars, then I`m ready for the exit door.

Marilyn
Nicky
This is getting too complicated. You can't please everyone. So Sidthespid and I are meeting at Gasteig restaurant next Wednesday at 7.30. If anyone wants to join us, they're of course welcome. We'll take it from there. I can't manage Mondays and Thursdays because I teach in the evenings. But that doesn't stop you from arranging to meet each other on those evenings. I also teach Wed., but finish a bit earlier. I only go to Curry Night once in a while.
Marilyn
O.K. WEDNESDAY IS O.K. BUT can you bring down the time just a little I teach at 8:00 a.m. Thursday mornings. Say like around 6:30 or 7ish that way we can still leave around 9:30 p.m. like always. Like I said start at 7:30 p.m. eat or drink and now it is 9.30 ready to go home, and no time for knitting. Get directions and put on the thread it`s location and call to see if reservations are needed for a couple of people at least.

A big thank to tinap for that.
@Marilyn - I teach at 8.00 every morning and until 7.00 pm on Wednesday evening, hence 7.30 pm for me, but that doesn't stop others from getting there earlier. In fact, I'm sure everyone has to be at work the next morning. I just can't be the one to save the table.

So far it's tinap, Sidthespid and me and a possible Marilyn.
Marilyn
Tinap and myself are meeting at the Gasteig around 6 tonight the 10th of May. Anyone else who wants to join in please come along whatever time you can make it. Bring your knitting. biggrin.gif
Elemmaciltur
hey, when you guys get the other venue and the day fixed, please post here so that I can tell Editor Bob to also put it in the anchor post, okay?
Marilyn
@Elem - we are checking out a place tonight, all who want to come please do. Those who want to go on a week night to SNB or those who want to go to twice a week, or those who have something planned for just one week end night and still want to participate in the SNB. Gasteig tonight at Rosenheimer Str from 6 p.m. on. And this thread has gone completely silent as to how our projects that we are working on are going.

I have put down the sweaters for awhile and am now working on a crocheted shawl. What are the rest of you proceeding on. rolleyes.gif
Nicky
Just to avoid confusion, by next Wed. I meant Wed of next week. But you two can report back to us, so we can make a decision about next week and maybe get this thing going. Have fun knitting.
tinap
Hey, Nicky.

Yeah, we know you meant next Wed, but we both want to get out of the house tonight, so are heading out tonight, too. Hopefully the Gast will work out, and we'll be able to go thre next week, too!

tina
C_in_Märchenland
How was it at the Gasteig? I've not been getting online much the past couple of days, so just saw you were meeting tonight now. I'm not sure about Wednesday evenings in the short run, but could work later, and like Nicky (or someone) said, you can't please everyone. I need a new project to start, so hope to be there on Sunday.

i told my aunt i was going to thailand & she said i should bring her a "bolt of silk" blink.gif

A bolt is a big, long roll of fabric so even the smallest one wouldn't fit in a backpack. You could of course try carrying one around, if you're into fencing it could come in handy for self-defence purposes. biggrin.gif
Elfenstar
thanks kay. that was my fear. i guess she's a SOL then. I won't tell her now. i won't be going until october anyhow. maybe by then she will forget biggrin.gif
Nicky
How was last night at Gasteig?
tinap
Can only speak for myself, but I had fun. We checked out the place, and reserved a table for 6-9:30 on Wednesday evenings, under the name S&B. Let Marilyn know if you hope to be there next Wed (the 17th), so she can get another table if we need it.

Everything at the Gast is self service. You get a card as you come in (like a magnetic hotel key), and there is a drinks bar, two 'kitchen' islands where you can order a salad, a rice dish, or a pasta dish, and they will make it fresh there for you, and a pizza island where they will make a fresh pizza for you. Prices are cheap and food is really good. Hope you guys like it.

I will re-post the instructions about where it is, with an update on how to get there from the S-Bahn station, as there are multiple restaurants and cafes in the area, and we don't want you hanging out waiting at the wrong one.

See you Sundays or Wednesdays!

You get a card as you go in which is your tab while you are there, then you pay when you leave. Lounge seating is in the back right.

When you get off the S-Bahn:

Follow the signs for the Gasteig. As you come up the stairs to ground level, there is a cafe in front of you. Qou don't want this cafe. Go to the right, and follow the building, until you come to an opening to your left that lets you walk through the building (an open walkthrough, really it is outside, like a tunnel). As you are going through, there is a restaurant on your left. You don't want this one either. When you get through the building and are out of the 'tunnel' again, on your right you will see outdoor seating. Up above in big letters it says Gast. Yes, this is it. Door is to the left of the outdoor seating area. Our table is directly to the left along the wall as you get your magnetic card.

Be patient the first time, and you will find it. If you feel all turned around and flustered, just ask someone working in the cafe or the restaurant or the library or anywhere which one is the Gast. Not the Gasteig, that is the name of the whole building, but the Gast.

See you soon, and happy sewing!

For those of you who won't make it to stitch and bitch Wednesdays, I still recommend the place as a great place to check out. Nice atmosphere, good food, etc.

tinap
Marilyn
Sorry but I can not post to the Gast right now as the situation within the family here as increased, so when it calms down, then I will.
Marilyn
Sorry for the inconvenience: I had teenagers here that just thought their britches were bigger than their bodies. Now for the Gast: Tina and myself picked out a high top table with a couch and high top chairs. The Table is very large - enough to place your food on and your craft on top of it at the same time. This table has more than enough lighting to it and this spot they don`t dim the lights there. The establishment was not very crowded when we first got there however, within an hour it was very active. But the echo barrier within this restaurant allowed it to be very quite, allowing you to count stitches if the need be. The table that we picked out is so large that you can easily fit 12 people around it comfortably and if the need be, there is another one just like along side of it. We even have some nice Italian cooks right along side of it that don`t mind a little conversation to pass their time. I booked it for eternity, each and every Wednesday night from 6-9:30, now if this place is not to your liking we can search another. So it is under the name of SNB at the front as you enter, however it is under my telephone number also, so if this place does not suit you, and we search out another then please let me know so that I won`t get too many telephone calls from this estblishment, as to where we are.
Nicky
Sounds great!
Marilyn
As far as I know right now I will be there at the Gast on Wednesday night. And I will be there as close to 6 as possible. Let me know if you are coming or not as I will look out for you upon arrival.
tinap
sign me up.

tinap
Marilyn
So far it is myself and Tinap - anybody else coming to the Gast restaurant at Gasteig PM me for then I will be looking out for you upon arrival, as to where we sit.
laura_k
Thanks everyone for coming yesterday, it was nice to have so many new people.

Victor, if you want to know how to make socks, don't be shy, just ask ...
Nicky
Can't manage Gasteig this week - but am definitely intending to come the week after! Thanks again to Marilyn for doing the organising. Who else is coming this week? It sounds comfy, central, well-lit etc. A good find. Even the curry fans could get a few rows in before heading off to stuff themselves!

Hi all -

I'm putting together a web page of all the places in Munich where you can buy yarn. I just started it, so it's kind of empty now. But I wanted to get your help in seeing if there's any stores that I missed. Please PM me if you have any more suggestions. Since I only had Sunday free to take pictures, most of the pictures are through the window. I plan to go back and fill in pictures/info as I get them. If you have info that I don't, please let me know and I'll add it!!! And please do add comments as far as if you like a particular store or not and rate the stores. I hope it will be a useful page to knitting/crochetting newcomers! Thanks a lot! I hope to one day go to a Stitch and Bitch...

Here is the page http://www.mountainwerks.org/MunichYarnShops

Enjoy!
Elemmaciltur
@kks, there's also a yarn shop in Muellerstr., I think it's called Die Wolle. Otherwise it seems you have all of them covered already.
Sidthespid
That website is a great idea, wish there'd been something like that when I needed it!

Gast is brilliant, good lighting, comfy seating, loads of room, friendly staff, great atmosphere, nice food, relaxing atmosphere. It's a gem! Easy to find really, just get to the Gasteig, go through the arcade and it's the last one on your right, by all the bicycles. The door is on the far side of the outdoor seating area. They give you a card as you go in and bobs your uncle.

Wednesdays in general are better for me and so this suits me down to a tee, as Sundays are more of a family day.

I love Gast wub.gif

I'm currently working on four projects; a bag for my knitting bits, a purse for my knitting bits, a zippy uppy cardy for when I'll be working with my knitting bits in a chilly wind and a teddy to guard my knitting bits.

Infact, I'll let you in on a little secret, he's no ordinary bear. He is, indeed, a very special bear. The zen master of comforting folk who go beyond the comfort zone, he is the bear whom all desire. My bear, my precious... I'm incarnating my very own...

MR. BEAN BEAR!!!

tinap
I had a great time at the Gast last night with Marilyn and Sidthespid. Nice to meet you, spids! Hope to see you again next week, and others!

tinap
Sidthespid
*aw* isn't he wuvvly?

Sidthespid
@TinaP

Cheers Tina, though you could've been honest and said I was a right arsey cow laugh.gif
Nicky
Oohh - me want one!
Marilyn
@tinap- you forgot to mention that we had a new recruit, to come to the Gast, our first new recruit and it only took us two nights to acquire one, at the GAST. Too bad he can only come around 8:00 p.m. but maybe soon enough he can learn how to make a wine cross stitch for himself rolleyes.gif Gotta love those rolleyes! Do you know what impressed me the most? To Walk in to an establishment, where we just reserved this table, LAST WEEK for ETERNITY, and to see a BIG HUGE SIGN on our table saying the words "Reserved FOR Stitch and Bitch" - man and in Germany no less. Can`t believe it, this place even throws in free advertisment just for us to sit there. Now I`m really smiling biggrin.gif
Marilyn
@Sidthespid: So glad to see pictures again on our thread. Glad to see you took my advice from last night at the Gast when you showed me the picture of your Teddy bear that you are going to knit. As I told you that our thread needs to be revamped for our projects to get new people involved. Now we can even show "mothers" or "young people" what you can make just by coming to us. You should make two of them for then he will have a friend and then we could have a pair of them sitting at our table at the Gast to show off what we can do. One at each end of the table. tongue.gif
Marilyn
@Sidthespid: Please tell me what "Bobs your Uncle" means? huh.gif
Sidthespid
Hey that's not a bad idea, I could make a second one with "Reserved for Stitch and Bitch" on it and they could use that as the reservation sign laugh.gif Anyone know where I can get hold of a 'growler'?

Sidthespid
@Nicky - if you're a very good girl, the pagan god of woolly goodness might bring you the pattern, but the pixies will surely tell him if you've been up to tricks wink.gif
Red
kks, there is also a store on Ohlmüllerstr. It's small and packed full of stuff but fun to browse. If I remember correctly, they have more than the standard Lanna Grossa stuff you find just about everywhere else. It's run by a little old lady who is very friendly and will help you with any knitting issues you're having. The hours are a bit weird- closed Thursday and Saturday, open the rest of the days something like 9-12 and 2-6 but I am not exactly sure.
Sidthespid
@Marilyn - It's an English saying, meaning "and there you go"

Dunno who bob was though ph34r.gif
Nicky
Gasteig sounds GREAT! A SIGN on the table! Stitch and Bitch is coming up in the world. So I need a new project, and it has been given to me - a TEDDY BEAR. I can make him out of all the bits I have left over. Looking forward to Wednesday.
Marilyn
I Graduated from the shawl that wasn`t me to the pocketbook -purse - that is me!
