@Zimmer, Thank you very much! I actually taught myself at the beginning, too (sort of...with the internet, to be exact)...and then you just pick up from that. Whoa...a Bolero? I socks are the most challenging stuff I've done up until now. Will also try my hands out at jerseys sometimes. Come along on Sunday and bring the pattern with you, I'm sure either I or somebody else at the SnB will be able to help you out with it!
Nicky
If it's an English pattern I could probably help. German patterns are a bit more complicated, as I remember. See you Sunday!
Elemmaciltur
@Zimmer, Nicky: If it's a German pattern, I should be able to help to some degree.
Elemmaciltur
My first commissioned (for real, I'm getting EUR 5 for this) project's finished!

The phone is just a model...it's my old cellphone. The one that's supposed to go into it is smaller...looking at it now...I think an iPod Nano would also fit quite well into the thing!
Nicky
That looks fantastic? A few bootees for the kittykatties, maybe?
Elemmaciltur
@Nicky, what do you mean? For Cookie? I don't think she'll like wearing booties though.
interplanetjanet
Hmm...you've given me an idea. I just might make something similar with one compartment for my credit cards and one for my phone...and a strap to wear it like a purse...
zimmer
@Em & the rest: Thanks for the heads-up. Will it be possible to work it out without a pattern book? I don't have any. Just saw one knitted bolero in the shop back home and looks damn easy to make/piece together smile.gif Bolero IS IN! Saw some nice colourful wool at Karstad (OEZ) & so tempted to buy. Hm, hm...

Another Q: I think my aunt gave me those needles back home so I never knew what size needles to use. What would you recommend to get??
Elemmaciltur
@Zimmer, it depends on a couple of things. If you like I can go yarn/needles shopping with you...just PM me. And if you like, I can search for some simple bolero patterns on the net and bring it along.
koala
Try feeding google the words "free knitting patterns" and "bolero". You probably find a pattern that is similar to what you're after

http://knitting.about.com/library/weekly/aa022805.htm

http://www.straw.com/cpy/patterns/rave_bolero_jacket.html

http://www.dailyknitter.com/grace.html

Even if they aren't exactly what you want they will at least give you an idea of the method.
koala
Nice and simple, this one is a different style.

http://knitting.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsi...r99%5Fknit.html
zimmer
No way! smile.gif You guys are great!

@koala: I like this one http://knitting.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsi...r99%5Fknit.html

The one I saw in the shop is similar to this (it's very short bolero) and looks like it's made of one long piece back plus 2 short pieces for the sleeves!

@Em: I'll PM you.
koala
Zimmer - yeah I like that one as well. It is knit in one piece 'sideways' if you like. You start at one wrist knit the arm, mark it. Increase stitches and knit across the back mark it and knit down the other arm to the wrist. Then all you have to do is 'create' the arms by joining the seams.
zimmer
Koala: I can imagine it! I believe the one I saw in the shop is like that. Ooh! Can't wait to find the right yarn & start!

I'm sooooo bad...I just casted on and started to knit the other commissioned project from my friend, who's knitting me a scarf in return:

Because the yarn (Lana Grossa Mega Fiamma, colour #109) is uneven, lace pattern won't remotely work with the scarf. So, I decided to make the ends in Moss Stitches and the body in Basketweave (I really love this Basketweave pattern). As you can see in the photo, I've just started into the Basketweave. It's sooooo much fun working with this yarn...it's bulky and calls for either 7 mm/ca. US #10 or 8 mm/US #11 needles. So, it's really fast to knit up. I mean, I'm using the first ball up very fast...
zimmer
Just watch this: http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/abbre...ions_explained/ It brings back good ol' childhood memories! Just I'll have to get those sticks right away! smile.gif
Elemmaciltur
@Zimmer, KnittingHelp.com was where I learned my knitting from at the very beginning. Are you on the forum there as well?

I just had to tink back the scarf above. Dropped a stitch and couldn't fix it somehow...so nothing left but to frog it down a couple of rows...and I fixed it now, without twisting any stitches! *Yay for me!*

Yup...my hands are itching to cast-on! I'm all set for tonight when the Winter Olympics fire's lit!

The knitting Olympics has started...as most of you should know.

Anyway, here's my progress on the first project for the Olympics:

I got bored and tired with it last night (because it took forever until the flame got lit...and we were allowed to cast-on at the same time the flame's lit)...so I picked up my mum's hat again, after putting it away for about a month. Now, as you may recall, I actually wanted to work cables on the hat and that I've transferred the whole thing on to dpns and had started working on the cables already until I put it away. Well, on Thursday night, I picked it up again, pulled out the dpns and frogged the thing down to the ribbing...and now, two evenings afterwards, VOILÀ:

I'll bring the real thing tomorrow to show you guys!
interplanetjanet
Hey, your hat and new project both look great! I made a hat, scarf and gloves for my mother as my first knitting project, but they were the most basic patterns I could find. I really like the stitch on the the top part of your hat. I'm just now using scarves to test out new stitches, though I'm still on the basic ones. Right now, I'm working an a loosely knit peach-colored chenille scarf with a simple double seed stitch. I'm quite happy with it, and I think it'll look great with some fringe added at the ends. I'll post a photo sometime later when I can be bothered doing it. After this, I'm just going to make another scarf with blocks of different patterns just to experiment. I want to do some more complicated stitches, so I can work my way up to a nice sweater. Happy knitting!
zimmer
Sorry didn't make it today. Coming down with a flu or something so just laid in bed & knitted smile.gif Already cast on last night & knitted the sleeve for the bolero. Hope I'm doing it right! BTW, Karstad on Kaufingerstr (opposite Saturn) has a large section of wool (I've not seen any bigger in Munich)
Elemmaciltur
Zimmer, I'm also coming down with a flu...and I was there...now I'm REALLY having the flu. laugh.gif

Hope to see you next week!
interplanetjanet
Elemmaciltur, can you share the pattern for that hat you posted the pic of above? I want to make a chenille hat to go with (though not necessarily be worn with) the scarf and gloves I'm making. I think that pattern would like really nice in chenille.
Elemmaciltur
@IPJ, *LOL* I'm feeling really honoured now...coz, you know, there's no real pattern for the hat. I kinda made it up myself. But I can try and tell you roughly how:

The bottom part is a 4x4 rib (You should cast on an even multiple of 4, e.g. 72 stitches - 4x18 - and not an odd multiple of 4 - like 4x19 - which I did). I worked the rib for about 14 cm so that afterwards you can fold the rib together to make the brim.

After working the rib you turn into the double moss stitch which is the following:

(in multiple of 2 stitches and on multiple of 4 rows)

Row 1 and 2: *k1, p1; repeat from * until end of round
Row 3 and 4: *p1, k1; repeat from * until end of round

Now, do note that I've put the double moss stitch instruction for ROUND KNITTING.

I'll give you just that for the moment...assuming that you should know how to decrease at the top of the head. If not, I've learned how to decrease for the top of the head via Crazy Aunt Purl. The instructions are HERE, it's from step 12 onwards. She really described it VERY well and very funny. I have to tell you though that the decrease won't keep with the pattern very well. However, you won't see it at all if you're doing a QUICK decrease, which I did. I don't know whether you can see the small amount of pattern discontinuation if you're doing SLOW decrease...decide for yourself. wink.gif

BTW, I used worste-weight yarn on 5 cm circs and dpns.
Elemmaciltur
Sheeshz! Why isn't anybody posting at all???

Anyhow, I put my Olympics Knitting on hold this morning...to finish this:

Okay, it's only one side, but I'm allowed to be VERY proud of myself. Wonder though, how long it'll take me to make the other side to make it a pair. tongue.gif
Nicky
We're not posting 'cause you're not posting! Sock looks fantastic. Time to start on a pair of gloves. You'll enjoy all those fingers. So who's coming on Sunday? Second from last Sunday and we need to plan a farewell somthing-or-other for the last Sunday. Put your thinking caps on - even if you need to knit them first.
zimmer
@Em, you are a talent! I'm just knitting something.

What time do people usually stay on Sunday? I might not make it at 5 sharp but around 6. Anyone still around then??
Elemmaciltur
@Nicky, yeah, great idea!

@zimmer, thanks! We usually stay until 20.30 - 21.00 hrs...and then the crowd starts to disperse.
Nicky
Yeah, zimmer. Come along. I am notoriously late. Usually get there around 6 pm. See you Sunday. Who else is coming? I did some knitting today, too.
Sidthespid
I can do knit and pearl and that's about it for now, can I come, or will you sneer at my crapness? My creation is one of those things that doesn't know what it is yet. laugh.gif

I normally drink like a fish but I'm off the alcohol at the moment, so you can also laugh at my orange juice if you like... ohmy.gif

How do I know who you are? (kidding)
TexasTornado
SidTheSpid,

They are a nice group who would never make fun of your creations. Trust me; they have been attempting to teach me to knit for many moons. I can cast on and knit one row before I get frustrated, abandon knitting project and embrace the bitching aspects of the afternoon.

“I don't want to knit! I want a pony! (said with the whine of a spoiled brat who needs a good slappin’)
Nicky
See you tomorrow Sidthespid.
Sidthespid
Will do biggrin.gif Will there really be anyone there by 5pm? (I don't wanna get there too early and look like a tit, hunting for the knitters who are not there...lol) or would you recommend me coming later?

Do you we bitch in English or German? (coz my German is as bad as my knitting)

ph34r.gif
Nicky
ENGLISH! I can't promise 5 pm, but Elemmaciltur will surely be there by then. Send him a pm to make sure. I'll be there before 6 pm. See you.
Sidthespid
I'll get there at about 6 then biggrin.gif

btw - a male? I don't know what's more shocking, that he knits or that he bitches! laugh.gif

Daaaaaaaaarl, I do BOTH! ph34r.gif Simultaneously, if it needs be.
Marilyn
I too had the flu on last Sunday but now I just have the tail end of a cold. But I will be there tomorrow night for sure. Somewhere around 5:00 p.m. Haven`t done anything more on my sweater sleeves since the last time I came but slowly, slowly, I will finish it for I want to learn how to do a cable stitch next. See you on the couch. rolleyes.gif

Surely that requires lubricant

Not necessarily and it depends on the type of lubricant. wink.gif

My first project for the Olympics is finished! I'll be blocking it tomorrow, so I'm posting the pics now, as I won't be bringing along tomorrow:

In the pic below, you can see where I made some kind of mistake on the side stitch...didn't know what happened, but when I noticed it, I was waaaaay over it and didn't feel like frogging. The scarf's 120 cm long and I'm hoping to gain length by blocking tomorrow!

Nicky
See everyone later!
Sidthespid
I've never been to the Twisted Bavarian before, is it all open plan or are there back rooms / nookes + crannies? I'm just wondering if you'll be easy to spot or whether I have to venture further into the recesses of Bavarian habitat...
Marilyn
Just look for the couch, we`ll be there.
Sidthespid
Thanks

Hey, Elemmaciltur, I just want to say thanks for your previous post with the hat pattern and links. I was going to thank you sooner, but I haven't had a chance to really take a look at the links yet. I've been icky sick for the last week. sad.gif

I've set aside my chenille gloves that will match my most recent scarf, so I can work on a scarf for my brother's birthday (only a couple days away - fortunately, I'm unemployed at the moment!). He wants one in the color of his favorite hockey team (the Sharks - white, teal and black). Elemmaciltur, how long and how wide should I make a scarf for a guy? I have no idea. I only see the world in my little person's perspective.
Elemmaciltur
@IPJ, no problems. A good length for a scarf for a guy is: Just a few inches...well, say 15 cm longer than the person's height. A standard length is probably about 170 cm
Nicky
Stitch and Bitch next Sunday - Elemmaciltur's working on a location I hope. Preferably TB, but if that's not possible for obvious reasons, then we'll meet up somewhere else. Location to be posted. Hope I'm not treading on Elemmaciltur's toes here - but his nice thick hand-knitted socks will protect them.
