Ah, crap. I forgot to take a photo of my scarf, hat and gloves before I gave them to my mother. They were her Christmas present. Anyway, she was mighty impressed with them, especially since they were my first project. rolleyes.gif

Anyway, now I'm on to a fluffy scarf made with a soft, feathery type of yarn. I discovered in Australia that nobody actually uses the word yarn there. Every interaction went something like this:

Do you know where I can find some yarn?
What?
You know, wool.
Oh. Yeah, it's upstairs.

I would never in a million years refer to the stuff as wool any more than I would refer to it as cotton or silk.

hey all, i plan to come tomorrow as well, but ill be pretty late (7ish) hope people are still there smile.gif

What time's everyone coming? Elemmaciltur can soon start a shop!

To be honest, I actually already have something in mind...but I'll need to see the right people to see how to go about it.

QUOTE (chook @ Jan 14 2006, 9:47 pm) *
Hi, I'd love to join the group tomorrow. I happened to pass this wonderful wool shop today (great colours and types of yarn, and prices to match ) behind Viktualienmarkt and considered it a sign that I should give it a go. I'm a beginner, although I once knitted a scarf with the help of my grandmother. I'm attempting to make a start tonight, but I suspect I will need some help with the stitching tomorrow (should be right with the bitching though ). Amie

Yay! Come!!! That place you got your yarn was 'Wolle Rödel', that's where I found my Addi Turbos. I'll bring my knitting bibles along again tomorrow so you can have a peek in it.

I'll be there at the latest at 5 p.m. If not earlier.
Elemmaciltur
Okay, Stitchers N Bitchers...the fisherman's rib doesn't work for me in circ knitting. Ended up just frogging it back to the rib and picked up the stitches again perfectly! (*yay* I feel so accomplished!). I think I'll just do the hat in stockinette stitches then. *sigh* Or maybe I could try working cables in! I'll see...

Romany - sorry, can't remember your TT-name - I got your message, thank you for de-lurking. I don't have an RSS feed put up, but if you're using an RSS-Reader and can put in a URL, just put in my normal blog URL and add "/atom.xml" (without "") at the end. It should work. wink.gif

Hi all. Here's a photo of my latest project. It looks much better in person than it does in the picture. It's brown and green and (for lack of a better term) earwax yellow. I'm not sure if I really like it or if I think it's too cheesy. I'll have to wait until it's long enough to wrap around my neck and look in the mirror to decide. At any rate, it's good practice working with different materials, though I'll definitely skip the hat with this one! biggrin.gif

I wish I could join you!

Laura K, wow, isn't that great??? Now you'll have to learn how to cable and then we can open a shop together!

IPJ, scarf's looking great! It seems really fluffly!

Sooooo...fellow knitters...tell me, has anybody ever tried switching from circ to dpns while doing cables at the same time?

If not, give it a try! It's pure torturous FUN!!!

I've decided to put in cables on the hat I'm making for my mum, because stockinette stitches would be a bit boring and unchallenging for me. So, I'm kind of making up a cable pattern along the way. Two rows of moving the ribs towards each other to form cables done and I noticed that the stitches were becoming pretty tight on the circ. So, I before I tear the yarn, I decided that there's no more waiting for the decrease to switch to dpns...and that I have to switch now.

Well...I had the stitches on the circ ends. Knitted enough for one dpn, slipped those off and started with another dpn. By this time, one end of the circ is dangling already and the stitches moved forward to the other end. I started knitting with the next dpn and then I came to the cable...Oh-oooooh...

The mess this afternoon:

Struggling with the cable while transferring to dpns from circ:

Anyhow, I got back from the uni and knitted and transferred everything onto dpns now. *phew! wipes sweat off forehead* I will knit more tonight and hopefully will be able to show off my own self-designed cables on the hat soon!!! Yay! tongue.gif
interplanetjanet
Hey, Elemmaciltur, I haven't tried all the variety of stitches you have yet, just a few combinations of knits and purls and that's all, but I really admire your enthusiasm! I'm going for trying different materials before I work on stitch patterns. I wish I could join you all at the stitch & bitch. It sounds like it's going great!

QUOTE
IPJ, scarf's looking great! It seems really fluffly!

It is really fluffy, which is both good and bad. It's good, because it's really forgiving, so if you accidentally pick up an extra stitch now and again, you don't have to go and undo anything. You can just stitch two together somewhere to get rid of the extra one. However, it's bad, because if you drop a stitch, you're fucked.
laura_k
what's cable sorry?
Nicky
Elemmaciltur can explain better - but it's basically achieving a plaited effect by using an extra needle. I'm sorry I missed most of the group yesterday - the one day everyone comes and I had arranged to meet a fellow teacher. Never mind. Hoping to get to work on my tablemat later this evening. Have to keep ahead of Elemmaciltur! Keep knitting everyone! And bitching of course.

Go back a couple of posts and take a look at my iPod-Sock (the black one), it's worked with cables. Come on Sunday and I'll show you how it works. I'm planning on bringing scraps along just doodle on.

Have to keep ahead of Elemmaciltur!

Sorry, Nicky, but I have to disappoint you...I've gone farther:

Yup, that's the sock I was working on. I turned the heel!!! But wait...

Yeah, that's the end of it. I got the heel turned...started working on the gusset...went okay...then I started to shape the gusset and that's when it all turned WRONG!!! I couldn't frog it...so I just thread the stitches and bind it off. That's my first try at socks!!! I'll keep trying though...but next time with proper sock yarns! Even though I failed, I still feel accomplished. laugh.gif
interplanetjanet
Looks like you might easily be able to turn it into a ball and shaft warmer, though you'd have to have one long and thick shaft! biggrin.gif Just run some yarn around the opening at that heal bit, and you can cinch it nice and snug around the balls!

Sorry, that's gonna be one of my next projects for my hubby. He's asked me to make him one for those chilly winter bike rides. See here.

Elemmaciltur
OMG! IPJ, your next project is SHADEY! Hehehe, I also read QueerJoe's Blog sometimes.

I'll start casting on with 3 mm dpns today for the sock propre with sock-yarn!
Nicky
@ Elemmaciltur - hmm ... you still have to try knitting with several colours at once! Or to knit a few sweaters. Have to go along to lots more Stitch and Bitch's! This is getting to be one of the liveliest threads on TT.
Elemmaciltur
Nicky, yeah, you're right. I need to try my hands out at Fair Isle...or maybe even Intarsia soon. But those are more suitable for jerseys and I don't think that I'm up to it just yet. (And so it seems that you've got your internet problem solved, eh?)

I'll be hunting for something challenging to knit during 10th-26th February...because I'll be participating in the Knitting Marathon over at Yarn Harlot's...I was thinking that I should do the Clapotis, but since I'm going to make it for a friend, I don't think I should rush it just to finish in time for the marathon...so I'm thinking about doing something else. I was actually thinking about doing the Irish Hiking Scarf...but I'm not sure yet. Yarn Harlot said that it should be something challenging...and I don't really think that the scarf is that challening. So, I'll have to look for more patterns.

The Clapotis will be one thing I won't blog on my blog, since the friend I'm intending to give it to reads my blog...

The clapotis will be one thing I won't blog on my blog (but will post here) since the friend I'm intending to give it to reads me blog.

Talking about the Clapotis...I went and get the yarn for it today already. I'm doing a swatch for it. Look at it...isn't it just yummy? (I think I should've done a bigger selvage edge...the St sts are still curling a bit):

The colour in the photo isn't doing it justice though...but I shall bring at least the swatch with me on Sunday. The pattern called for 5 mm straight needles and a heavier yarn than what I'm using. What I'm using now is 4.5 mm needles and hmmmm...sport-weight yarn. But so far, it seems that my gauge isn't that bad. The pattern's calling for 19 sts/25 rows = 10x10 cm. I've so far 23 sts and multiplying what I've for the rows, I'd have about 36 rows in 10x10 cm...so I think I'll stick to this yarn anyway. I'm sooooo excited now!!!
Nicky
@Elemmaciltur ... I wish I could understand half your jargon! I just know cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease and cast off ... and wear! You must start a shop! Online, at least! (Computer problems, dare I say, solved).
laura_k
Nicky, did you just restart the router..?

I've already mentioned that I actually have something in mind about that - serious idea! Only I don't know how to go about it. Care to have a chat about it? (Hey, we could become partners!)

Funny thing today: In the Pro7 boulevard news at 8 p.m. today, there was a scoop about men who knit! *LOL* For once, I'm kinda ahead of the trend! laugh.gif

HERE'S the scoop (from AOL)
laura_k
But if you sold things you'd made they'd have to be hugely expensive to pay for the time? Will you sell the wool and needles?
Elemmaciltur
If you're interested...I think I'll talk about it to the others at SnB this Sunday. Just be there. wink.gif
laura_k
I have a friend coming tomorrow who doesnt like knitting (yet.) so we'll be seeing the sights i think. I'll be there the week after though.

Incidentally I've started knitting a pink thing; ive no idea what it is yet though. This is probably a bad idea.
Elemmaciltur
Laura_k, how about joining up with me at the Knitting Olympics???

Any other SnBers up for that? It'll be fun!
laura_k
If they rename it the Pink Lump Knitting Olympics then certainly. Otherwise, no. If you want knitty collaboration though i'll ask my knitting friends if they're doing it. Some of them make amazing things.
Elemmaciltur
Hahaha, no, I don't think that Yarn Harlot'd be renaming it.

Tell your friends about it, maybe they want to enter.

Ross, de-lurk yourself, mate. Can you please tell me the name of that BBC Podcast you listen to?
TexasTornado
IPJ - HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Thanks girl, I needed that.

@Elemmaciltur - ok, I guess we talk business on Sunday. Amazing, the few hours per week when I relax and knit junk with my wine and quesidwhatsits, and now you want to talk business ... On second thoughts, if something makes money ...
oceanne
I have been knitting on my own for some time, just basic stuff. But I would like to start coming to the stitch and bitch group...do you all meet up every Sunday at five? If so, I´ll be there. smile.gif
Elemmaciltur
@Oceanne: Yes, indeed we do. You can come at 14.30 hrs if you want.

So, peeps, I'm getting extremely frustrated! I'm trying to knit laces. I never get past row one. The pattern calls for multiple of 10 stitches plus 5.

Row1: knit, (knit in the front and back of the stitch - I take it that this is a bar increase), (slip one stitch, knit two stitches together and pass the slipped stitch over), (knit in the front and back of the stitch), knit 7, (knit in the front and back of the stitch), (slip one stitch, knit two stitches together and pass the slipped stitch over), (knit in the front and back of the stitch), knit one.

Row 2: purl.

Now, the pattern goes on...but the problem is that I never got past row one. Why? Well, after the 'knit7' and the bar-increase after that, I ended up having only one stitch left on the left needle. So, how am I supposed to be slipping it onto the right hand needle and k2tog and then psso.??? What am I doing wrong?

Am I supposed to be slipping the bar-increased stitch back onto the left needle and treat it as the next stitch? Or what am I supposed to do??? HELP

Just in case Uta (Rubberduck?), or Roz (if you can knit in German) is reading, I'm going to put that bar increase instruction and sl, k2tog, psso. in German here and you could tell me whether I'm doing something wrong:

bar-increase: In Hin- und Rückreihe je 1 Masche rechts in das vordere und in das hintere Maschenglied derselben Masche stricken

sl, k2tog, psso: In Hin-R 1 M abheben, 2 M recht zusammen-stricken, die abgehobene M überziehen; in Rück-R 1 M abh, 2 M links zus-str, die abgehobene M überziehen.

Say...I kinda want to try my hands out at knitting. What would I need for a start? Couple of needles (what size?) and a ball of yarn?

Would it be okay if I pop in to one of your stitch 'n bitch sessions so somebody can show me? I can also bitch. *LOL*

@Elemmaciltur – you were a bloody freshman in beginning of Dez. last year and now you are knitting laces ?? You starts frighten me !!
Not sure if I still have the courage to show up this Sunday. unsure.gif

Sorry cant knit after written down instructions, no matter if it´s in german, english or marsian. Even in german it sounds crypto to me.
I always needed a person to show me how to do it.
Tomasino
I'm confused by the name of this meeting.

Is this a gay thing?
Nicky
Don't think anyone cares if anyone is gay, bi or whatever. We just gossip, drink wine and coffee, eat and knit!

@ Elemmaciltur. Don't quite understand your predicament. When I knit in order to have a firm edge I always slip the first stitch and knit the last one, so in this case I wouldn't see any problem having the last stitch on the needle. You just have to look at the pattern and make sure you have the correct no. of stitches for the pattern to fit in completely. German knitting instructions require you to fit the pattern in, as far as I remember. English patterns do all the work for you, assume you are an idiot, and you can follow them stitch by stitch. Anyway, bring it all along on Sunday, and I'm sure we'll work it out.

For info - producing a hole involves basically knitting two stitchs together or pulling one stitch over the other and then making a stitch. As long as you keep the same no. of stitches on the needle you shouldn't go wrong.
Elemmaciltur
Rubberduck, okay, doesn't matter. Thanks anyway! Come along, nevertheless, I had been looking forward to see your arm warmer!

Tomasino, does that really matter?

Nicky, Oh...well, I'm heading over to my LYS and ask the lady there. Moreover, I just ordered the same book in English over Amazon.de (bloody EUR 27.95...and considering that the German version is EUR 9.95 from Hugendubel)...oh well, when i get the English one, I'll eithre keep the German one with me (just to learn to knit in German)...or else I'll put it up on eBay.
TexasTornado
Tomasino, we embrace everyone regardless of age, sex, race, stubborn attachments to organized religion, sexual orientation, drug of choice or where they were born. Come on down and see for yourself.

This Sunday, the 22nd Day of January in the Year of Our Lord 2006! (Said with a Monte Pythonish accent)

Book Chat with UpQuark
Saan's schöpferstammtisch
Painting with Perdido
And the no yet famous Bitch & Stitch knitting circle (adult beverage consumption with needles and yarn)
Elemmaciltur
TexasTornado, Amen, sistah!

WHAT?? There's a painting group, too??? ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH, I haven't got my water colour stuff here!!!

But anyway, looky at what I've just started:

I decided to start a Meilenweit sock! And it's soooo much fun! I still have my other Regia 4-Ply on the needles...eventhough it's sooo soft, it's just charcoal black and very boring.

Yup, and I need to knit...my yarn stash is overflowing! I can't even decide which works I'm going to bring on Sunday. I'll definitely bring the Yarn-Eating-Monster and the Meilenweit sock...then I'll bring some scraps...and I'll probably bring the needle and yarn to start the Clapotis...yeah, that'd probably be it...(haven't done anything more to the hat at all. *urgh*)

BTW, the lace thing didn't work out. I went to ask at Wolle Rödel and the lady jotted the pattern down...she said she'll try figuring it out over the weekend and I'll have to come back on Monday. Was pretty funny, because I fished out my needles and yarn in the shop and started casting on and knitting there to show her what the problem was...then the old ladies in the shop just started gathering around us looking at what we were doing. Then they would peruse over the pattern and grumbling, saying things like that it should work and were discussing why it didn't work. Was pretty nice actually. Didn't seem to disturb them at all that I'm actually a young Asian guy. laugh.gif

Me too! My stash looks about the same, and I'm still working on that fluffy scarf (off and on). I went on a yarn-shopping spree while I was in Australia, because it was all sooo cheap there. I bought 8 sets of needles and probably 30 different skeins of yarn. At AUD $0.79 - $2.00 for each 50-100g skein, I couldn't pass it up! I've got a large-sized cloth Tengelmann shopping bag overflowing with yarn. I'm actually thinking of getting a yarn-oranizer bag. I've seen lots that have special sections for your needles, scissors and other supplies.
Elemmaciltur
@IPJ, hahaha, yeah, we have the same dilemma! O.o the yarns are so cheap in Aussie??!!

I'm tempted to just carry my whole yarn stash to TB tomorrow! *LOL*

I couldn't resist last night and started on the Clapotis already!
laura_k
Hey V, i got a set of those five funny needles today; i want to make wrist warmers.. No idea how they go together but i'm very excited! I've got my friend staying but I've talked the poor girl into coming for a little while.. hah!
Elemmaciltur
What size dpns (double-pointed needles) did you get? Have you got yarn for it?

How about Mrs. BEETON for your wrist warmer? I'm fan of the pattern's author (she podcasts my favourite knitting podcast).
bonnie
Those wrist warmers are too cool, I'm going to give up on my boring scarf and try my hand at them instead.

What time is evereyone heading down at today?

Sara
Elemmaciltur
Bonnie, I'll be there between 4-4.30 p.m.!

My Yarn-Eating-Monster is almost finished! Two and a half stripes to go and I can cast off!!! *WHEEEEEEEEE!*

And I triumphed over the lace pattern!!! The damn instruction told me to use a bar-increase, I asked for help and got help: I should do a YO instead of a bar-increase. I mean, why didn't I think of that? Because the book's actually translated from British version, so usually the symbol's a YO...and now, I present you my first lace swatch! (Done at 1.20 a.m. this morning and after 2 days and 3 nights battling with it!):

Ps. I've already have a Spring project in mind now: Marley's Ghost Felted Chain Scarf! That's going to make such a cool accessory for Spring!!!

Nice picture elemm... etc. I didn't notice that being taken!
chook
Here are the basic knitting instructions I brought along last night - good for beginners.

Elammaciltur - congrats on finishing the yarn-eater, looks great!
Elemmaciltur
Okay, I need some help here - again. I finally swatch a pattern that I'll probably be using for the scarf. The problem is, it doesn't seem to want to do a mirror image of itself:

Now, from the bottom up you see the normal, correct pattern:

CO 23 sts.

Row 1: k5, k2tog, k4, yo, k1, yo, k4, sl1 knit-wise, k1, psso, k5
Row 2, 4 and 6: purl
Row 3: k4, k2tog, k4, yo, k3, yo, k4, sl1 knit-wise, k1, psso, k4
Row 5: k3, k2tog, k4, yo, k5, yo, k4, sl1 knit-wise, k1, psso, k3
Row 7: k2, k2tog, k4, yo, k2, p3, k2, yo, k 4, sl1 knit-wise, k1, psso, k2
Row 8: p10, k3, p10
Row 9: k1, k2tog, k4, yo, k3, p3, k3, yo, k4, sl1 knit-wise, k1, psso, k1
Row 10: purl

Now, I've done two repeats of that and started working backwards, but the bloom curved the same way as the normal pattern. (Now, you can see the top half and how the blook still curve from the bottom up, instead of two separate petals from the side going towards the middle in the top.)

How can I get the bloom the curve in a mirrored way??? (like when you turn the picture upside down and take the top) I've tried swapping the k2tog and the sl1 knit-wise, k1, psso already, but still it's still curving the wrong way.

Maybe I'll got to an LYS and ask them, too...but it'd be great if you guys could also help me out!

BTW, if you want to know, the yarn is Lana Grossa's Mega Stoppino Colour #204
alala
You want them to curve in toward the center, instead of out toward the edges, is that right? It won't look exactly the same, but if that's what you want, you need to swap the yo and the decrease. Put the yo on the outside of the curve and the k2tog (or the k1sl1psso) on the inside. If you don't want a big hole, then yo backwards, if that makes sense.
