@Rhapsody, wow, you're stripes are nice and tidy. I think that I'll just have to knot the yarn and try tucking the knot into the side somehow. I'll have to see also whether I can tug and pull the yarns a little bit where the joins are to make it tidier.

So, peeps, tragedy striked my scarf last night. While knitting it, I pulled too hard and some stitches came off the needles, unravelled themselves into several rows below. I tried to save it with my crotchet needle...but it was far from saving. So, I've frogged the last part and starting off from the beginning again (I can't unravel all of them, because I've weaved in the yarns already and made some minuscule knots when I've done it). Oh, well, I guess that it's better so, so that I can make the scarf perfect this time, especially with the colour joins. *fingers crossed*
Lesson learned: Don't knit at 3 in the morning, especially when you have hardly slept the day before.

sorry to hear about the unravel, i can empathise. Good luck with the restart

If there's anything left of the scarf bring it along on Sunday. I'm sure we can rescue it.

Jan 4 2006, 10:23 pm
@Rhapsody, thanks!
@Nicky, well, I've unravelled the last black strip to the white one. I don't think I want to save the thing, because I've already started all over again, so that I can get the yarn colour joining tidier. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the old one with the three stripes though. Maybe I'll bring it along on Sunday, inspite of everything, and we'll see if I could bind it off somehow...and then I could do some experiment with it, i.e. throw it in the washing machine and try felting it, just to see what it's like. *LOL* But no worries, I'm quite okay with re-starting anyway, besides, I want to have this scarf finished by Sunday, so that I can wear it to the university on Monday.

The only thing that I'm regretting is the half balls of yarns that I used up for every stripe.
Nicky
Jan 4 2006, 10:57 pm
Maybe we could find a way to turn it into a matching hat? But it would probably be best to simply unravel it and re-use the yarn. Waste not, want not.

Hey, do you guys know anyone who can do repairs to a sweater? I have a really pretty sweater with some stitching on the ends of the sleeves but it is falling apart all around the sleeves. Here is a picture (hope it's not too big).

Jan 5 2006, 10:39 am
@Kitkat, sorry, I'm not good at fixing. I couldn't even help my own dropped stitches.
@Nicky, I'll bring the scrapped scarf along this Sunday...although I have to tell you that with my new one, I'm almost back to the same stage now, i.e. starting the white row very soon. Am determined to get the white stripe and at least the second charcoal stripe going today.
Nicky
Jan 5 2006, 7:22 pm
@kitkat64 You might try crocheted carefully around the sleeves with the same colour wool. Otherwise can't really think of anything.

Jan 5 2006, 7:55 pm
@kitkat64: that bit that's coming apart is an embroidery stitch, a variation on the Feather stitch. There are some instructions on it
here, which I find kind of difficult to read, but you or a crafty friend might be able to make sense of them. I can fix it for you, but I'm a bit of swamped right now, so, uh, maybe next month...?

So, if you haven't read this on my blog, here it is:

So, after about a day of on and off knitting, I got back up to where I was before I frogged. As you can see, left is the old one that I frogged and the right one is the new one I'm doing.
Incredible, but I think that the phrase "practice makes perfect" is pretty true. The stitches on the new one is very even. I mean, look at the left edges of the old one and you can see where it twisted and turned, nothing of that on the right one (okay, I just hope that it won't twist and turn when I weave the ends in)...

And I mean, look at the colour joins. Now I just knitted the first stitch of the two colours together, dropped the old colour and carried on with the new colour only...and now the join is clean! Compare the old (left) one and the new (right) one!
The only thing I have to figure out now is what I should do with the old one. I'm actually considering binding it off somehow (provisional bind-off, is there such a thing?) and then throw it in the washing machine to see if it would felt...just for fun. *LOL*

Jan 5 2006, 8:34 pm
I think that's a great idea! I'd love to know how that stitch felts (without doing the work myself...)

@Alala, Okay, felting it will be! But first I have to find a way to bind it off.
@Rhapsody, Yup, I'm there this Sunday. I mean, the new one has a tidy edge...however, I'm dreading that I'll lose that once I weave in the ends. But yeah, you can show me how anyway and we'll see. (I'm pretty sure that one edge will be bulky, because all the loose yarns are on that side).
@Bonnie, There's no limit. Just come along. The more, the merrier. If you can't knit and want to learn, I'm sure we can find you something. Otherwise you can just bitch with us. *LOL*
@Eurovol, you showed up once? I probably wasn't there back then, eh?
Nicky
Jan 6 2006, 2:19 pm
@Emmaciltur Don't see the problem with binding off. Can't you just unpick the last two rows and use this yarn to bind off with? Or simply join in a length of new yarn to bind off with? If you don't have any particular aspirations for this piece, then it doesn't really matter about the extra 'ends' of yarn. See you tomorrow!

I can't make it till about 4.30, but knowing me, that probably means 5 o'clock. Would be great if there was a big group waiting for me. How about sitting in the middle bit on the couch - that was really cosy - and not so smoky as at the bar. Easier to have the table too.

Damn. I finished one glove and was almost done with the second (though I set it aside for awhile), and I snapped one of my knitting needles in two.

Now I have to go buy another set before I can finish it. I've got the whole set now, though - scarf, hat and gloves.

HELP! My new scarf's cursed!
While I was knitting yesterday, I pulled the yarn out from the ball and found a knot tying two ends of yarn together...FROM THE BALL!!! (I'm going to complain to Lana Grossa...unless you guys can tell me that such a thing is normal). I pulled on it to see whether it's stable enough, which it was and knitted it in (it was on the side). Three rows afterwards, the damn bloody knot untied itself!
HELP!!! I haven't done anything with it since and am bringing it along. Nicky or somebody else more experienced: I'm begging you to help me on this. I need you to insert the needle in the row below that knot so that I can unravel it up to the knot and then felt the yarns together (instead of just tying them together). The thing is because I've done the scarf in Fisherman's Rib (p1, k1 in the row below...or 'Vollpatent'), I don't know where to insert the needles! *sobs*
Nicky
Jan 8 2006, 2:12 pm
Yes, one does encounter these knots from time to time. My mother taught me never to trust them. It's best to unpick back to the end of the row to get a reasonable length of yarn between the knitting and the knot and then use whichever method you prefer for starting with the new end of yarn from the ball. I don't think you'll get far complaining about one knot, but if this happens more than once in a ball then I think you could certainly take it back to the shop. See you later. Don't understand the bit about inserting needles - I just take the knitting off the needles, unravel and insert the needles again. Not sure how that works with cable, but I'm sure we'll get it fixed. Cheer up!

Hey guys! Was a really nice evening yestereday...
Guess what? I came home and continued knitting my scarf...Happily knitting away and...I pulled out another knot from another ball of yarn! *Grrrrr* I didn't leave it like that this time and proceeded to cut out the joints and felted it together. Now, the felted joints just look absolutely fantabulously out of place...*sigh* I just hope that at the end, this scarf's not going to be fubarred.

Took a break from my yarn-eating-Fisherman's-Rib Scarf and dedicated myself to my new iPod-Sock which was finished this morning! *Yay!* Perfect kitchener stitches work sewn up on one side while the pieces were lying flat beside each other...after that...well, didn't turn out so tidy anymore with the kitchener stitches.
Lo and behold the front side:

Lawdy, this thread's going down-under!
I'm getting extremely bored with my scarf. It's not growing at all. In the mean time, I've started working on my mum's hat and started a practice sock with a ball of yarn I picked up out of the discount last-ball basket at Wollkorb...thing is, I'm actually liking the sock, even though it's just about 5 cm from the top down at the moment. I'll need to go and find the same yarn today...and 4.5 cm dpns for it, since I'm using 5 cm dpns at the moment and I'll actually need those to decrease the hat. Gosh, two first-time circ knitting projects at once!
Here's the proof (the scarf, the hat in blue and the sock in brown):

Hi, I'd love to join the group tomorrow. I happened to pass this wonderful wool shop today (great colours and types of yarn, and prices to match

) behind
Viktualienmarkt and considered it a sign that I should give it a go. I'm a beginner, although I once knitted a scarf with the help of my grandmother. I'm attempting to make a start tonight, but I suspect I will need some help with the stitching tomorrow (should be right with the bitching though

). Amie
