been trying to coerce some friends into doing this, but they won't
knit in public... have no clue why. anyhow, will be in the states then, but will be happy to participate in next one if you decide to proceed further. i stitched and bitched with a large group of people back in new jersey and we had a lot of fun and it was extremely helpful to have experienced knitters next to novices.
happy knitting!

Forgot to mention. The circle will be held in out non smoking library of the TB, so no need to worry about your knitting smelling like smoke.
@potterstreet This will be a weekly event. Not too public, actually the most private room we have. But if they really dont want to knit they can always come along for the conversation on slow Sunday afternoon.

Well, damn. Forget P1, knitting is in. Be there or be square. New tag.
Do you want to be rich and famous?
Or at least act like you are?
Then come to the TB knitting circle.
Come on, everybody's doing it.

well if you don't know how, and i assume we would be able to learn, what would we need to bring to get started? what should a beginner start with? socks? shawl/scarf?
potterstreet
Nov 18 2004, 9:19 am
a few practice squares is a really good idea before embarking on any project. a scarf is a great place to start though. definitely not socks, too complicated.
to begin, i would get a ball of wool of medium weight, not too expensive and some needles about size 5 or 6. then you can see how well you adapt to knitting and whether you like it or not before making an investment in materials. warning: knitting can be an extremely expensive and addictive hobby!

if you've never knitted before, I would say just work on a practice square first rather than a project. Buy a cheap ball of yarn out of the odds & ends bin at one of the department stores, and a set of needles. no idea if they size needles different here, but usually a size 6 or 7 is a good size to start with. not too long (you'll find they come in different lengths as well as widths). You'll learn the different stitches on this, work out the tension, etc.
Then I would say a scarf should be your first project.

can't make this Sunday but woud be up for the next one.
I can only really knit scarves so would be chuffed to learn more advanced stuff!
yarn/wool is not so expensive at
Hertie in the town center. they always have a big tray of reduced stuff! I think for my last lot I paid 1€ per ball of chunky boucle wool.

If you don't already have needles, no worries I've got lots. You can borrow them as long as you promise to return them. Do, however, bring yarn.

Not rude, out of style.

like EVERYONE does it, knitting is (and has been for like 3 years now)
the hobby to have.

Nov 18 2004, 3:00 pm
Sorry out of style and out of character. I'm obviously not keeping up with the times.
Happy knitting...
would be well up for a stitch and bitch - though this sunday not great.
Potterstreet, it's not that i don't like to be seen knitting in public, but most bars or cafes are a bit smokey, plus i am v. likely to spill something over anyone's pale-coloured knitting. You saw what i did to moonboots knitting bag with my red wine at my place (i swear, that white bag was like a magnet for my merlot).
also, have been knitting the same jumper for about 2 years, am beginning to panic that i may actually finish it...

I wouldn't say archie's being rude, just a bit of a poo.

Anway, I'll join in sometime. Don't know if I can make it this Sunday, but definitely sometime. I'd love to learn how to knit! (and it can't possibly be more expensive than my jewelry-making habit)
butterbean
Nov 18 2004, 3:17 pm
all right, he's just being a poo. I'm home with the flu, and taking lots of drugs too.

(Cat in the Hat anyone?)
hoping I'll be well enough to make it. sounds like we have a lot of beginners who are interested (not that I'm an expert, but I have made a few things). If I can, I may go shopping for some yarn on Saturday - if anyone wants to join PM me - and will try and xerox a few pages out of my knitting book as well.
that is if this blasted fever goes down. may need to defer to next week if not...

Michelle, a stitch and bitch afternoon sounds like a great idea... although I left all my wool and needles back in Oz, so will have to put a call thru to my mum and get an emergency care package sent over. Yay.
Might not be able to make it this Sunday though... when is the next knitting day? Will it be a regular Sunday arvo thing??
Mbangura
Nov 18 2004, 4:48 pm
@Caitlin This will be a regular Sunday thing, always non smoking, no worries.
@LFF We can make a colorless bevarages only rule, or just have a separate table for bevarages to avoid any red wine repeats.
Like I said before, I have lots of needles in varying sizes if anyone doesnt want to comitt to a pair quite yet.

Hee LFF...at least the Merlot only landed on my knitting bag...remember it was about 1mm away from the cream scarf that I was (and still am

knitting)
Phew!!
All that excitement!!!

@Mbangura...this sounds like a lot of fun...i would be up for using your needles for a try if you don't mind. i haven't done much knitting in my time. i'll bring yarn. it sounds like
Hertie is a good place to go for that.

Actually, scratch my question - if you left out the stitching there'd be nothing left to distinguish it from any other TT event...

I shall try and drop in as well. My cardi needs starting.
Minor warning to anyone who is trying knitting for the first time, when you get your wool don't choose white, black or navy - really bright or really dark colours can be a nightmare when it comes to seeing what you're actually doing.
If anyone wants to try their hand at crochet let me know and I'll bring a couple of crochet hooks with me.
persimmon
Nov 19 2004, 9:37 am
I'll be there for the crochet bit. I'll need a little guidance, but if I stay away from weinschorles I should be able to pick it up so you don't have to hold my hand all afternoon.
koala
Nov 19 2004, 2:15 pm
OK - I'll make sure I bring a crochet hook then.
Do the stitches have to be knitted? I might pop in with my cross stitch. The question is how good is the lighting? I am doing christmas cards in gold on black so good lighting is rather important... If it's not too good I'll have to bring something else instead.
Roz.

It is rather dark in the back, but we can get some spot lamps in there no problem.
I will also be bringing crochet needles if anyone wants to give that a try.
This is any kind of stitching, so all domestic arts are welcome.

Thanks to everyone who came yesterday. A great success indeed. Someone forgot their ''Knitters Companion'', it is safely put away, I spent the rest of the evening reading it, an invaluable resource I must say.
Secondly, for the future we will be adding to the menu, per my request, glükwein (guaranteed that is spelled wrong)
two types of gourmet hot chocolate
assorted baked goods (hopefully)
I look forward to seeing everyone next week.
Thanks again.
